Winter Solo Overnight - Vintage Canvas Tent - Extreme Cold - Self Feeding Long Fire - Woodsman Meal

  • Out in the canvas tent again in the snow. Usually I'm not a fan of being in an enclosed space in this weather but if its canvas its still ok and pretty comfortable. First time I tried this type of long fire...have not tried it before because I had my doubts about how well they work etc. But It was pretty fast to make and practical. This way I'ts a pretty simple construction that gives you heat for a day and night without doing much around camp. And I could easily have stacked more wood on it but I knew it would be more than enough because of the conditions. Of course a log fire is better if the goal is to heat your body, but the amazing Sami Nourssjo is pretty worthless for cooking. And this construction is perfect for cooking if you make the dimensions right for your cookware. A time or two the burn can make a log for example to move in an undesired way...but it takes no more tending than a poke with a stick or foot. And lets not forget the Nourssjo for example also demands some tending and watch...raking with an axe etc. The construction rests on four sticks with one Y-branch each for support (Because in winter you can not drive sticks in the ground deeper than an inch or two because the ground is frozen). At the end there I noticed the supports was a bit scorched down just above ground level but they still had enough mass left. I still see a possibility they could burn off though. The solution is 4 small flat stones strategically placed. I've noticed in the passed when I do these types of things that people are surprised fire does not climb up wooden structures, logs etc. In short: Fire can not burn on its own on a single object. It can scorch and blacken a surface briefly but thats it. Fire needs to develop heat in between at least two surfaces with not to big distance appart or it will die. So that was never an issue, especially in this cold weather with snowing and moist frozen spruce logs. However when the logs are stacked, you need to use straight wood made clean with an axe..so its a snug fit. Or else air and fire will get in between the logs.
Ive got this old very rare Bohussäcken backpack I'm very fond of. So It has been years since I used it because I want it to last. It is my pack that fits the most perfect on my back with a shape that suits me. There is not even images of it on the internet! So this is the first time its on the web. It's a pack of the external frame backpack Haglöfs era I think. If anyone has any information on the brand Bohussäcken in general or this model please write in the comments. I have not found anything about this company that seems to not exist anymore. Maybe its a model name made by Haglöfs? (just a guess). Thank you for watching!

Hi out in MI, I'm over in the Western 1/2 of MA watching this.
I hope Swed can make a trip over here 1 day, some cool places I mentioned to him I think he'd like.
I think maybe out of the 4 I mentioned, 2 may actually allow bushcrafting.
The rest is go in with a tent or something but, if you want to build a shelter just to try it out, you can't which stinks.

Even when you make these self-feeding fires "right," they put off a lot of smoke, which is fine, if you're sleeping low to the ground and want it to burn while you sleep. But when you're up and around in camp, you end up breathing a lot of smoke.

IN school, I remember posters advocating "Work smart, not hard". As I grew older, I realized that was actually terrible advice! What they should have said was " Work smart, AND hard". You seem to get that. Simple solutions like 2 Y branches for a saw horse rather than an elaborate construction, or trying to be lazy and just free saw everything. Elaborate can be fun, yes, but that sort of thing can come later in camp as a hobby rather than getting the necessities out of the way. Thanks for letting me tag along on another great trip! I'm going to make some food, I seem to suddenly be hungry. Cheers from Canada!
