3 Days Solo Winter Camping - deep snow, no tent, below -20°C

- 2 nights out in the woods and some seriously difficult snowshoeing and cold weather in Ontario, Canada. The first-day temp was around -12C and dropped to -20C overnight, by far the coldest I have ever experienced sleeping outside. My tarp shelter worked against me this night, an experience I will never forget.
The second night stayed around -9C through the night with light snow so I went without my tarp, a beautiful relaxed evening beneath the stars.

Why are you cutting down trees?
The trees I cut down are all dead, trees that die and remain standing dry out and prevent rain and moisture from saturating the wood so it makes great firewood.
Live trees contain a lot of moisture and don't burn, I also love trees and I don't cut down live trees
If you are alone who's filming?
I film everything myself from a tripod and yes I do walk back to get the camera when I film myself walking away from the camera. it's pretty straightforward, it just takes time. Two Unedited Clips from the video - • Video
Are you scared of wild animals?
Bears are Hibernating over winter and wolves aren't an issue in this area, so no
-20C wheres your jacket?
The first-day temp was around -12C and dropped to -20C overnight. Pulling the sled sawing/chopping wood and working hard creates a lot of sweat. If I sweat it will eventually freeze which is bad news so when I'm working I wear a long sleeve a small sweater than a big wool sweater which is on the cooler side but prevents sweating and is perfect for the conditions.
Spoon? Why not Chopsticks?
I ate oatmeal, soup and rice not shown in the video, the sausage spoon thing was a joke :p Yes, chopsticks would work better and are easier for sausage, and yes I am proficient with chopsticks :p
What's with the Poo?
It was some animal Scat I found, I was curious and I didn't recognize it, was hoping someone would point out what animal it was. Its likely Fox scat

You have my utmost respect. I’m 58 and did a winter camping trip into the interior of BC, Canada about 3 weeks ago. I drove up a logging road and had to park at the start of a steep side road because the snow was too deep. 4x4 got stuck and had to dig it out. I had to use snowshoes and a pulk to haul all my gear up the road about 200 meters, on 4 trips. I started this hauling around 4:30pm. After that, having to keep a fire going to keep my dog and me warm (got down to -18C at night) and all the setting up, I finally managed to get to sleep at 1:40am. I can’t remember ever being that tired 😴. Snow was at least 3 to 4 feet deep (the fire made a hole 3 feet down) So stayed two nights and headed home. It was a great experience and will do it again. Wife thinks I’m crazy. Sure makes you appreciate a warm shower.
bravo
Can’t imagine what it’s like to sleep out in nature, let alone in a snowy terrain. Never been camping before but man this looks worth it.
If you've never been camping before...maybe this is not the best place to start. I'd recommend a backyard haha
if you aren’t prepared camping can be pretty miserable

I remember the winter of 1989, it was -55 Celsius outside, and -17 in my bedroom. I slept in the living room beside the wood stove instead. The toilet was frozen each morning too. Then I would go to work. What was my work? I drove the Zamboni in an ice rink. So basically my life was perpetually cold.
No escape eh damn :p

@@chrishayes5755 1989
I love that snow on the face: alone in a mountain hut high in the Pyrenees, the drifts higher than the windows, toasty in a down bag, listening to music as the finest snow found its way in to land on the tiny bit of face exposed. Truly sublime. The fact I may not have been 100% sober probably helps the memory too!
I have around 35 years of experience with this kind of outdoors life in Norway and I have sometimes in my youth made the same mistake. We usually set up the tarp a little bit different than you do here. If there is any wind from behind there must be an opening on the whole lower backside of the tarp to let air move through, else the smoke will always build up under the tarp. Another solution can be to position the tarp so that the wind will move in at an angle from behind, that will blow the smoke away most of the times. Yes it will be a little less warm under there but for me at least the most important thing with a tarp is to prevent snow or rain entering.
Может в Норвегии такое и сойдет. При -20 такое сооружение не годится.

I can barely fall asleep in the comfort of my bed at night and heres this guy sleeping like a baby in -20
Check out floor sleeping. I’ve had chronic insomnia since I was 5 years old. I’ve had months where I could only sleep 3-4 hours a night. Making the transition to sleeping on the “floor” (I sleep on a yoga mat with sheets and comforter on top) isn’t easy, but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now I sleep straight through the night essentially every night. Once you get used to it, it’s more comfortable, you feel more supported and “safer” in a way, and your sleep quality generally improves because of it. Not saying it’ll work for you, but I’d definitely experiment with it.
Interesting thanks for sharing

Man, you worked your ass off cutting all that wood. That’s a whole job in itself. You’re a bad ass!
There's something about this that is so nostalgic. The snow soaking up the ambient sound and the fact that there is no music makes it so much more immersive.

Wood doesn't burn forever. From my previous camping experiences, I would think you spent most of you time chopping wood and keeping your fire going, especially thru the night. That would make it very hard to relax and get some solid rest. That would get old after a couple of days.
I think after an argument with his mother he went camping in the woods in his backyard. He was in a rush, he even forgot to take his coat and elbows. He managed to rob the fridge and got bacon and sausages tho.

Watching this again to get myself in the mood for a -2 degree wild camp tonight here in the UK! Not quite as cold as Canada but cold enough! 😂
It felt like I was watching this on tv lol because of the adds everytime you went asleep they were perfectly placed keep up the good work ❤️
I’m not religious by any means..... but respect to him for thanking something for the great few day outdoors. I do the same... just appreciation of what we have around us. Great vid much respect
I'm not religious either. Just a bit spiritual :p
@@XanderBudnick I thought the prayer at the end was cool. You made me want to make some bacon at 9:30, so I did. I’m heading to bed with a happy belly, happy mind, and happy soul. I hope your coming week goes well and that the pursuit of your spirituality is met. Much love.
@@ggill1313 right on brother! Cheers
I’m doing alright on my own thanks. But each to their own.
The fact that you got those camera shots is work I respect that 👏
Amen Xander and thanks for sharing your balmy adventure 🤣
One of my best night sleep was in the British Army. It happened to be -14C that night (water froze in our bottles by the time we were trying to make breakfast). As long as you have a roll mat and a good sleeping bag, it's really very comfortable. Aside from the obvious non-tactical nature of it, I would definitely not sleep next to a fire.
Damn man. Props to your efforts. Not only doing a solo trip in this brutal weather is extremely difficult but also documenting the journey. Those lovely shots.. cheers mate.. good work
Thanks friend Glad you can appreciate it :D
Awesome docu.really mind-blowing.were you all by your own?
💯💚🙏
@@somabhattacharjee7738 hi lady
I once bet my 3 sons that i could sleep outside comfortably in tough inclement weather. I picked a blizzard to prove my point. Set my camp up mafe a wind break cooked over the coals of a fire. & slept like a dead man. Good gear & understanding of how to set up your camp.
Budnick! Awesome.
Im studying in med school , everytime I lose my concentration I put your videos in backround . Love it ! :)
The neighbors are staring in their yards and all you hear is
“Xander you okayyyyy buddy. Let me know if you need any bacon or sausage ??!”

Or another battery for your camera
All the CZcams Bushcrafters have unknowingly taught me over the years to never forget your gloves and your cooking utensils.
And an extra pair of socks
