Hi Xander. I am very gratefull for your videos. In 2020 I lost my dad in a car accident and my mon was very injured, she needed an emergency surgery and stayed in ICU for about a month. To entertain her during our lost, we started to see your videos. We really enjoy your trips and we're fascinated with Canada landscapes. Its such a beatifull country. We also love when you eat your enourmos steaks. I hope someday I can bring her to Canada to meet a moose (although they're not particularly friendly)

This looks like an amazing setup for at least 2 campers - having 2 people could probably mean that you can sleep longer and being sure that more people is looking after the fire - also, 30 degrees inside, while it is -10 outside that is an insane difference - one can only imagine how cozy, like super cozy, this would get with a matress, a blanket and a pillow, after almost a whole day of gathering firewood this must be an amazing experience, and considering the simplicity of the setup, I cannot help but feel like the knowledge of this shelter could save a lot of good souls out in the cold.

  • @DaddyBearSads
    @DaddyBearSads Před 4 měsíci +13

This is a classical double nodia. Very common in Urals and Siberia. To impress efficiency of this fire you need to use another one big log in front of two logs. To increase warm isolation on the ground you need to made a log bed and put your sticks on it. It also improves total comfort of your sheltered night..

One of Mors best inventions together with the parachute nylon tube(2m long and 70cm wide useful as bag, scarf, mantle, mattress, light weight blanket...
made by taking 2m long full width ripstop nylon, fold double length and sewn with a flat fell seam then ends hemmed.
    l
seen supershelter made by spray glueing a space blanket to ripstop with about 60-75cm nylon sticking out three sides (allowing back to be tucked underto prevent draught) and one side had flat felled in a strip of nylon only about 10cm wide with loops on the corners of the spaceblanket (leaving the 10cm flap outside) the loops where for ridgeline to be toggled on with prussik loops. poly tarp she stuck on with gorilla tape on the 10cm flap , it held up a whole week, she said the poly had to be replaced every now and then but she had used same back for over two months total outdoors.

Hey Xander. Love your channel! Your advice certainly came in handy this past weekend when I got stranded on a remote trail in northern Ontario.
It took much longer than I anticipated ( turns out I hiked 20k+ over uneven terrain with snow/ice conditions) and it got very dark before I made it back to where I parked. ( yeah I am a dumbass) I was not able to follow the trail markers ( not very well marked I might add) and ended up having to call OPP! They sent search and rescue guys to get me out since I only had basic gear and no headlamp ( l left at 11am) Live and learn! - they were calling for freezing rain.
Fortunately I had a lighter on me and was able to get a decent fire started thanks to your techniques! Everything was damp so I built a good base of dry wood on the cold wet ground, used dry low hanging dead limbs off trees and standing dead trees ( with their tops!) small enough to tip over. I was able to get enough birch bark to get the fire started and keep me warm until rescue guys arrived two hours later. All thanks to your your advice my man! The officers were even impressed with the fire. haha!
Two of the four fantastic OPP/search and rescue officers ended up having to commandeer two canoes!! in order to get us all back to the main road - which saved and save us an hour of difficult hiking. They had to break through huge swaths of ice with the paddles in order to make it to us. What a crazy crazy night! You can't get any more Canadian than that, eh? Being saved by the OPP in canoes. (Canadian Heritage Moment)
Bad decisions make for good stories as they say! Haha!
Your calm demeanor in challenging situations and sage advice stuck with me and helped me immensely. I owe you a debt of gratitude.
    Cheers!
    Anthony

I’ve seen other folks making these, and have been carrying a saw, hatchet, drop cloth and emergency blanket in my winter emergency car kit, just in case. It also has a fire starter set, a mirror, a full change of warm clothes, a bunch of slim Jim’s that I cycle out every two weeks and three bottles of water. After finding a cheap one at a garage sale, I added a sleeping bag. I started this kit after I was almost stranded on the wrong end of the freeway while camping just prior to the Northridge earthquake. The kit takes up one plastic crate in my trunk, so totally doable, and it really gives me peace of mind. It takes up about the same amount of space as the car emergency kit I got from Costco years ago, which I also highly recommend.

Likewise. In my truck I keep one of those big plastic tub things with the snap on lid, with plastic drop sheet, a couple of the mylar blankets, paracord, fire starting supplies, etc. just in case I'm ever stuck out in a cold weather situation and need to do something like this. And of course there's a saw and a axe in the truck as well.

the greenhouse effect! since you are creating a vapour barrier, some people use an old cotton sheet inside the barrier roof to soak up condensation as well.

I'm from the south (Galveston, tx.) Where forty degrees is hurting cold to the bone... I find it hilarious how he says it was pretty toasty at forty degrees...

Your doing a lot of improper falling but you have a zeal for the outdoors. Bravo! Recommend you talk to your local loggers about falling 🌲 trees and survival. I’m a old guy and you’re making the right moves. Safety and basics first! Great vid.. From the Blue Mountains.

Awesome video as always Xander. One really helpful thing I learned about preparing the tree bough mattress, is to stick the strong end of each bough into the ground and do this the whole length of the bed with lots of them. It has the effect of the boughs not completely flattening to the ground over night. It takes a little more time, but I was amazed by how effective it is. Hope that's helpful 🙂
