Xander, I wish I could express how much I love your videos. You uploading has become an event in my household. I make a cup of tea, turn off the lights and become completely absorbed. I’ve even managed to get my wife hooked. You’ve quickly become my favourite creator on CZcams. We don’t have much wilderness in the UK, but you’ve inspired me to get outside more and try new things. I hope you continue to grow!

Careful. You start with a few Xander videos, then you think "Maybe I'll watch a few of his brother Maxim's video's as well..." and suddenly you're getting CZcams recommendations for two-hour-long Lost Lakes videos, which leads to Explore The Backcountry, Alexis Outdoors... dozens more. All day and all night, you're watching Canadian CZcams channels. You start ending every sentence with "...eh?" and asking at your local pub if they serve poutine and have Canadian beers available. Pretty soon, you're watching hockey on TV. At that point, there's no hope. It's time to pack up and move to Canada.

You really bring out my days in the military when I was stationed in Alaska. We were taught wilderness survival skills just in case. I’m 62 now so we’re talking the way-back machine. Some things we learned, work smarter not harder. Working up a sweat will make you cold. I learned that wool is not itchy in the cold. But one survival skill was building a snow cave. Inside the snow cave, it will stay at 0 deg C even if the air above is - degrees. You crawl in through a small door at the bottom of the shelter and create a sleeping shelf to keep you above the air coming through the door. A small fire or candle is enough to warm the air inside the shelter. Of course our training was strictly survival enough until you could be rescued. Wow! That memory came out of nowhere. Loved this! Looking forward to another adventure

I think you'll find the Siberian log fire setup ideal for shelters like this; the heat shoots out in a roughly 120 degree fan, low to the ground and toward the shelter. Meanwhile the opposite side of the fire has no heat, and only a little goes straight upwards. Lasts a long time, burns efficiently and requires very little maintenance. I had a relatively small one going last night, it was a humid 5°F with no shelter and it was great, only woke up around 4am to piss and scoot the toplogs forward. 👍

Enjoyed your fun.. Been there many times over my 70 plus years... Luck was with you to find so much downed wood and trees that is for sure... May I suggest in the future and it is rare to see any one of these "Survival Experts" teach this. But I always build a 3 x 3 foot wall or Reflector behind my Fire and about two feet away from your shelter entrance. This helps direct the heat into the Shelter. My fire is also half the size of yours and uses less wood because of the Reflector. A Senaca indian taught us when I was 12 that White man make big fire and is cold, an Indian makes a small fire and is warm... The larger the fire the further away you have to stay from it or fry... Take 4 logs and use them to lay on after removing all the branches and smooth them down to get you off the ground. .. I've used the same two Pendleton Wool Blankets for almost 20 years now.. Doing is Learning.. Thanks for sharing.

Your making of banok made me think of something. It'd be cool to try various traditional survival foods from around the world while you're camping. I imagine that most of them are similar, like Damper which is just a simple bread that was a staple for australian bushmen, usually eaten with honey if any can be found. I always liked it because we cooked it directly on the coals making it nice and smokey which goes well with honey or jam.

Back again: it takes both experience and vision to see this spot as a shelter. I am pleased it worked for you! We had spruce groves that offered more inviting shelter possibilities with less trimming. Our problem was how to provide a heating and cooking fire safely within the circumference of the tree base. We were young and had yet to learn that a small, warming fire can do a big job in winter, with the proper sleep system.

There are a couple of things that put your video head and shoulders above most of these other phonies on You tube.
    1) You actually talk! WOW!
    2) You don't bore us with repetitive tasks
    3) You actually built a primitive shelter just large enough to sleep in and small enough to catch some radiant heat from a robust fire.
    4) Your dinner menu was simple and looked delicious.
So I'm inclined to believe that you actually spent the night (unlike most of these other phonies) in it because you described the comfort level which seemed believable. Nice job. I'll be subscribing and looking forward to more.

Can you comment on why you chose not to use a Long Fire for warmth with this particular shelter? Considering your deliberate lack of sleep bedding, one would want to optimize available heat and warmth resources. Happy New Year!

I live in south Florida. Everything about this is utterly alien to me. Not just the cold and snow, but the concept of being outdoors all night without being devoured by insects, the idea that fire is your friend, or that it can be lit and actually burn instead of sputtering out from all the moisture in the wood, the act of being able to cut through wood and not have your saw get snagged by uncuttable fibers or gummed up with sap. Your environment in the winter is far more survivable than mine is in the summer. Imagine not even being able to take a cold shower, because there is no cold water.
