- In a wild forest on the edge of a ravine, I found the perfect place to build a bushcraft-shelter. In this forest, there are a lot of wind-fallen trees, many of which hung when they fell. I cut the dead trees into logs and wedged them between the trunks of living pines. The roof was made of the bark of fallen oaks, and I got the stones for the fireplace from the bottom of a ravine. It turned out to be a beautiful hut where you can cook food on the fire and keep it warm.

When I went to to Northern Michigan for deer camp, I'll bet I didn't say 10 words in 3 days. On day 4 I met up with some friends camp site, but even that was a low key evening.
I love being outside and away from people and the Internet. I crave it when it's been a couple months and I haven't gotten away for a weekend.
Putting explanation as subtitles is certainly a nice way off adding more to interest people. I think primitive technology does that.

This reminds me of sleeping in my bungalow at -12 degrees, firing the oven with wood I had to pick up at midnight outside from behind the bungalow. The frozen night with no wind is not cold at all. The smell of the burning wood, the sound of the fire and the peace, but also the lowered level of comfort gives a feeling from stone-ages, it awakens long forgotten instincts. It's perfect to come down to earth and forget money and big cars.

How fortunate to have found a group a trees growing practically perfectly together for you to build that shelter! Using the wedge method and holding everything in place without having to dig any holes is just bushcraft poetry!

This is very similar to what the pioneers built when first homesteading. Something that you could put up quickly without nails or wooden pegs. Just as long as it will keep you warm and dry while you build your permanent home. One can still run across thr remains of these in the bush. Well done!
Absolutely right! Shelter and warmth come first! Our ancestors had a much better understanding of survival. Modern materials have deprived us of this skill. Thanks for the interesting feedback!
@@Bushcraftimprovisation I dont think modern materials have deprived us. We have simply moved on and found "greener pastures". Just bc we don't see horse and buggys doesn't mean we've lost the ability or knowledge.

Clever technique of wedging logs between the trees. Makes totally stable framework. Only thing I would change is build a cover over the smoke escape. Nicely done!!

@killercrock9362 I think what he was trying to say is that this video proves you don't need to run to menards or home depot to buy a ton of manufactured materials to build something although the building quality would be improved. All you need is a few simple basic tools to build some shelter.

You have this great wood to work with everywhere, mats of soft moss, young pine branches, naturally occurring slabs of good sedimentary rock, excellent and malleable oak bark. What a bushcraft haven.

Great idea for up here in the PNW. Lots of forest up here with young timber. And fresh cedar bark was used by Native Salish for many things, including roofs. Those trees will grow outward and the bark will squish out around and into those side cracks. This is a great design for a few seasons of camping, at least.

Seems if those logs aren’t dry they’ll shrink. Also, a windy day/night might make those logs shift and fall. Maybe a concept for a more temporary place to live while working on something more permanent. Very cool. Enjoyed the video immensely. 👏
perhaps, but the tree resin from the damage to the bark of the live trees might help, also the uprights are getting larger every year????

Amazing build. The bark roof definitely showed the potential of natural materials to keep you drier than might be expected.
I'm curious now dry it stays. Does not appear to have a pitch for water shed. Naturally the fire hole allows smoke out but rain/snow in.
Love to see how well it all faired in 5 and 10 years.

So i like the way you build this cabin for winter could be perfect for inviting some friends.
The way i see you put those wood planks is a way to hold the wals so they dont fall or have tiny gaps to let the cold air enter.

Amazing skills and craftsmanship there would love to build something like this. If you didn't have screws or nails to fix it together the wedge method is very clever and simple and effective to do.I bet it's solid and very strong too great stuff 😊
Well done! I should think that the hardest part may have been finding trees to readily serve as support posts for the structure in the manner required. The ONLY think that I would have tried to do different might have been to build some sort of direct external exit chimney exit for the fire smoke, as opposed to how the fire smoke exits here.

This is one of the most practical builds I've seen in a bushcraft video. Some guys build stuff that probably leaks like a sieve or one spark from the fire would burn it down with you inside. I especially liked your idea of using pealed bark for shingles. A to top it off is the simplicity of the structure. Great video.

It'd be kind of neat if you built a chain of these. Like now that this is built, you could make a couple trips just to stock it with supplies so you can travel lighter later on, covering ground faster and with less fatigue. Then use it as a base camp to build progressively more and more of these farther in any time you find another spot far enough away to be worth it. Even if you had to do some last minute patching, having a structure 95% intact next time you're around means you can cover more ground a lot more quickly. You'd have your own little network of mini-hideouts if you ever I dunno need to go on the run or whatever.
At the end, you point out the tactical importance of this network. To do this, I choose the most remote places where people hardly ever show up. Now I'm working on another such vault, which will be a complete contradiction to this one.

This guy is smarter than the average bear to use trees that already form rough corners. Why don't more guys do this? I've watch a lot of vids on this subject, and few have figured this out.
More people dont so this because its a terrible idea for several reasons. Most obvious and foremost being that trees sway in the wind, and that alone would destroy this childs fort in under a day.
SO COZY! This style of old cabins need to be sought after again, imagine campsites with these in them.

That is a brilliant video! It's a method I've thought about for some time, but wasn't sure if it would work. I guess the big trick is to find trees in more or less the right configuration, but I think it allows one to become creative as well. The idea of using bark like that for the roof is a very good idea. How would it hold out in very high winds though? Could one supplement it by laying a big, thick tarp over the top and tie it down?
Better yet, put tarp on first then bark to wt. it down. Snow load is heavy metal insurance. 😊

Do you really? Start today, move out into the country and find a place that is not owned by someone and do away with all your money. You do have the tools, wagon and horse don't you? Throw away the phone but then you will die. Notice the location of the place is not defined. You can't just go and build something on private land, that includes national or state forests Have fun finding someplace to build.
@garyfinger294 lol I hear whatcha saying and I'm completely aware that it's not an easy way of life. Especially at first I'm assuming. Nobody said it would be easy. But I have spot to build on. And water is accessible. Adding solar panels, a wood heater/stove, hot and cold water, and a few other minor things to make it comfortable, and it could be a good life. Grow a garden, live off the land as much as I can. Most of all be free and away from paying rent or mortgage. Doesn't seem bad to me. But it's something you gotta want. And with that getting it set up is probably a great reward in itself. This world and country is getting crazier and crazier and to be able to get away from the rat race and the violence and crime and the pressure to work just to survive is worth the effort it takes to get a successful homestead going.

@@Bushcraftimprovisation don't believe that ... eventually the need for survival will cause some animal to consider you a delicacy
@@1peter2N9 most animal's instinct, especially in areas still near towns, have adapted to not want to interact with humans. Think about it, you hunt a human and even just injure it, now you have a bunch of humans making it so that your genes dont get passed down. The ones that survive are the ones that avoid humans. (Exceptions come in with creatures that havent had to deal with humans/or are too big for humans to be a threat. Northern bears, moose, etc. Yet those are omnivores/herbivores that would rather hunt something else)
