I noticed you said, "ever since I quit drugs and alcohol"-firstly, well done ! Secondly, I am watching this just finishing off my taper on subutex (an opiate substitute like methadone) and it is really helping me pull through. I am three years without booze now and the opiates are the final thing to stop. I love the outdoors so much and cannot wait to get back out there. All the best from the UK.

I love watching your videos (ASMR) and highly instructional. I have a Fishing tip for you all (especially Xander). When you're ready to fish with either live bait or with lures, it's always smart to wash your hands with Lake water, then; you need to rub your hands in any grass, dirt, mud, or seaweed you can find (just like you did with the dirt at the 21:10 mark in this video. When you're handling a lot of different things, it's important to realize that fish are all about Sight, Sound, and Scent. It is your scent on the lures that can easily dissuade the fish from being attracted. Great Video !!!

I'm really glad to see you advancing into hunting content. It's definitely a crucial skill in the quest to become a well-rounded outdoors man. The appeal of traditional bow hunting over other forms of hunting to me is the fact that you need to become one with the land in order to find success. You're not just sitting in a tree shooting at animals 50-100 yards away, or blasting away into the air with a shotgun until you hit something. No disrespect to those forms of hunting, which still require great skill in their own right, but the ceiling for personal growth is so much higher with traditional forms of hunting.

That fuzzy little mushroom is a Hedgehog and they're actually quite yummy. I think the 1st ones you found were false chanterelles - you can tell that by them growing in singles or very small groupings and also when the ridges don't go down the majority of the stem. Glad you didn't eat them because you might have gotten sick! I appreciate your innovation and perseverance because that was a beautiful fish! Thanks for the content, Xander. It never disappoints!

I just know the false ones often grow by themselves or in very small groupings and don't have the ridges all the way down the stipe. I had a mom and daughter who came into my ER who had eaten several of them and both ended up in ICU; mom for 2 nights, daughter just one.

Just some helpful tips for people watching. In a survival situation you want to conserve as many calories as possible. Wearing a backpack while fishing is useless calorie expenditure and increases your chances of getting injured which can easily be fatal when you’re alone.
Another thing to be careful of is when you’re sleeping in caves or under rocks and you want a fire, you NEED to slowly heat the rock before you create a large fire. If you make your fire too fast the rocks can crack and kill you in your sleep!
Finally. If you managed to get some of your socks wet (or any smaller clothing items) if you put the wet socks in your sleeping bag your body heat will dry them out overnight. A water bottle with warm water will also help keep you warm in a sleeping bag when it gets super cold!

I was so happy when you caught the fish I was literally throwing my arms up and cheering exactly as you did. I think if my first day had gone how yours did I would have cursed my fortunes and peaced out. Well done turning it all around. I do have a question for you:
When you're just laying on the ground under some giant rock for a sleeping arrangement, you mentioned checking for droppings as an indicator if an animal may be using the area as a home, but are you not worried about things like insects, arachnids, snakes? Are you not worried you're going to wake up infested with ants, termites, or spiders?

Insects are all gone for the year and we're fortunate in Canada they dangerous snakes and spiders aren't really a thing

@@XanderBudnick Oh very cool, appreciate the reply. I live in Arizona, so the insects/spiders can be just as dangerous as the wildlife, and a rock formation like that would be prime for those type of critters.

I enjoyed the little hurdles of the broken fishing pole, lost fish, wet shoe, etc. That’s reality and what happens on many camping trips. Great video, thanks.

Where I live there’s a small cave that can fit around 12 people laying down & it’s near a campground used by the boy scouts , I remember over 20 years ago me & some friends camped out in this thing for 2 nights one time in the winter , there was 8 or 9 of us , we made a nice fire in it & with all the rock around we all kept very warm in the thing because the rock kept the heat in . We used a big tarp to block off most of the opening but left a big gap at the top so smoke could get out . If SHTF tomorrow I know where I’m going .

Sorry I haven't tuned in for a while. Life has been crazy. Gratz on the 2 years and thanks for the hard work you put in. Staying positive in a tough situation like this wasn't easy, but the persistence rewarded you with that beauty of a meal. The fish, no the chocolate. ;)
Looking forward to catching up with the rest of your videos.
