3 Days Solo Bushcraft Trip - Canvas Lavvu Shelter - Monster Pike Fight - Camp Craft

  • Camping, hiking, bushcraft, canoeing and fishing. Out for three days with the everlasting polish lavvu shelter. Longest video I did so far. The Swedish lone wolf poncho is not canvas but linnen...much more lightweight and made for a perfect awning to the Polish Lavvu. I say we have a match!
Put my pants in a stupid spot in the dark so it rained on them in the night. Sometimes you see me doing the simplest and fastest thing just to make something work. Sometimes I go overkill with something so simple as to hang some wet clothes. This was one of those times. Why? Because when I have the time I think its fun to carve and create things. I had extra pants with me thank God. Simple. I am not in constant survival bypass mode. I just like camping, and chores like carving etc is mediative for me. So spare me the comments that start with "I just take a stick and...."
October pike fishing is pretty intense. Since I found the deepest spot in the lake last year I've gotten bigger pikes. This one, 85 cm long, short but very wide was the biggest pike so far. I marked the floor in the canoe to measure the length of the fish later. The scales I have is defect (from too much hanging heavy backpacks from it) It showed just over 10 Kg, but trying the scale out at home simulating the weight I calculate the pike was around 7-8 kg.
    Thanks for watching!

Bushcraft is a skillset. It's not mandatory as a bushcrafter to go naked to the woods and trying to survive. To do that every week is a unrealistic fantasy. The way I see it, bushcraft skills make hiking and camping more efficient, lightweight and interesting... and not to forget FUN!.

A master of his craft, no question! I don't limit this to bushcraft. The photography, the audio, the pacing..... he gets more narrative out of less tricks than most big name hollywood producers. It's always a pleasure to watch a master at work regardless of the subject.
The humor is so understated that I laugh weeks later thinking of it. I refer to gems like.. not cutting out the video of him backing up the car to retrieve the camera...unpacking a nice bottle of wine and a fancey stem to go with his camp meal. Many bravos and thanks!

    1. The settings are always peaceful and beautiful, and portrayed in a way that's much like what I see when I'm in such places (the spider webs, the moody scenery shoots).
    2. The camp skills and equipment are always simple and elegant.
    3. And when watching an entire video I tend to get HUNGRY.

I've relied on gear. Last 4/5 years I've been foraging and practicing more primitive skills, rely on tool, knowledge and environment to provide. I like it when you see a flick about someone out in the bush and not shooting their pie hole off on everything that they do. Brings back many memories when my buddies when out in the bush camping for a few days, we didn't talk much either. Each one of us had a job to do & we did it. The experience came in handy when I went out on a bivouac with the rest of the troops. Lot of bugs, skunks, key deer, snakes, but we made do.

Monster pike indeed! Congrats on a well-fought battle, he was having none of it until the very end. Lucky for him that he wasn't on the menu, eh?
Getting cold up there too. We just had our first mid-30F night here in the Shenandoah Valley- my favorite time of year. Take care!

A big ol' Northern Pike aka Jackfish, slough shark, gator. Believe it or not, they're pretty good eating. As long as you get them out of cold water, and they're no bigger than about a foot, and a half. Maybe two.
