My wife and I saw it yesterday. We were not disappointed. Stunning cinematography, and well cast. Episode one introduces the characters, and sets up for episode two.
That’s all that matters. If it connected with you and you enjoyed it then I’m glad. There really was a lot to like in the film.
im happy to hear that will be going to see it thank you
@@olentangy74 unfortunately nobody will watch episode 2 because 1 was a mess.
@@SkeeterDunn I am.
@@SkeeterDunn A mess? LOL. That's not a criticism, and not close to true.
Great movie! Best Western movie that I ever seen 👍 🇫🇮
❤ loved it. Can't wait for the next chapter
Loved it! No Wokeness. Just great, old-fashioned cinema - and a western to boot! Deserves better box office $$$.
Woke is so 2023 😴...I would suggest finding another category to critique movies with. Hopefully wokeness does not ruin your life at the movies either. Enjoy! 🤠
@@goodrich06fr he see one black person in the movie and call it "woke" lmaooo
@@erenjaeger1738 I know what exactly would make Horizon woke? 😂😂🤔
@@goodrich06 😂😂 I don't see anything woke in this movie, only Disney productions are woke because they wanted to push a DEI agenda. The diversity in the Kevin Costner film are history fiction with historically accurate of what was going on between the native American and the settlers
Kevin leans pretty left 🙄 he’s no Dem nor Rep. But he’s very accepting in backgrounds of everyone which is quite “woke” in definition.
I have seen it today. Absolutely loved it. Great movie with my favorite actor/ director, Kevin Costner. Finally, someone has the guts to make something original. We're really needed that, after the tons of ridiculous remakes. Look forward to seeing the next chapter!
I agree that we get way too many remakes and sequels. I do think the film was well-made from a production standpoint and I’m looking forward to seeing chapter 2 as well.
Horizon was fantastic. I saw it last night and I am waiting to see part two
Same !
I watched it last night and loved it!
We need to think that it is the first movie out of four (maybe five)…..
Things will start to merge as movies are released.
Can’t wait to watch second movie.
I’m actually looking forward to the second one because it held my interest enough to see the second part. I do think the second part is where the meat of the story will begin.
This movie wasn't flawed. It's literally called chapter one. One needs an attention span to follow the story lines. Many don't. Thought it was awesome and can't wait for chapter 2.
Flawed review. Can’t follow the characters? Too many stories? I say you, reviewer, don’t know your history. I loved the movie and can’t wait for the next chapter.
Half of the film felt like i had been dropped in on these people's lives of the time, and the other half felt like a john ford film
I liked the haunting music and different characters. Yeah it felt like a John Ford western. You can bring a lot of friends and not worry about brutal violence.
We just left the theater here in Montana. We absolutely LOVED THIS MOVIE! The acting, cinematography, music, animals, horses, cows, children, romance, men, Indians, women, clothing, scenes, everything about this movie was beyond words. I would have sat through it again in a heartbeat. Kevin Costner did it again. This movie will be in our home, right along side Dances with Wolves, Legends of the Fall, Horse Whisperer, A River Runs Through It, All of Client Eastwoods movies, Jeremiah Johnson, I cried my eyes out! I cannot wait to see the remaining three movies. LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!

I’m glad you enjoyed it. There’s a lot to like and I figured it would resonate with a lot of people that saw it.
@deborahanderson1160 try out the director's cut of Dances with Wolves if you haven't. I lived in Wyoming many years ago and spent time in your beautiful state.
Saw it today. A must-see. Captured the essence of the real West. Can't wait for parts 2 and 3.
Absolutely. I 100% agree with you. It was awesome and the critics have done Costner a huge disservice.
Same ! Glad to see we're many to have enjoyed it despite the critics
I don't believe the negative word being said at all its a great movie.
I was seriously disappointed in this aspect.. The dialogue was terrible.. Not period specific.. (why I love the cohen bros) He has made epic movies / westerns before.. I could not follow the dialogue at all. This plot and basic story line was horrid. Characters were under developed and were miscast. The cinematography was amazing.. everything else sucked.. Surprisingly the violence was boring with the exception of the indian raid burning down the town and houses..
Technology phone addicts aren’t able to watch and sit down in a disciplined time to be able to appreciate this piece of art .That’s the main problem. Kevin Costner , the genius, has brought us an incredible beautiful but horrific way of life during those times . Let’s wait until we see chapter 2 before we talk the much about how the movie .
Ok it makes a TON of sense now. I was not able to follow along on some of the story lines where the film was jumping back and forth, because I had no idea it's a 4 part saga. I was under the impression it was going to wrap up in 2 films. This makes way more sense in that this is going to spread out into 4 parts and this film is an Epilogue.
The Introduction.
I believe there will never be a part 3 or 4 because it has lost millions of dollars why would investors invest in a loosing thing.
I thought the movie was amazing!! So raw and full of Grit. Definitely seeing part 2
Perfect from start to finish and can't wait for second episode.....
I’m glad it connected with you. I can’t say anything bad about its production quality. Also, Costner did a really good job in his role. Despite my rating on it, I am looking forward to the second part.
I liked it ,ready for the second one.
I loved this movie. It was epic. It’s beautifully done with real scenery, real people, no CGIs. I was very invested in the characters, storylines and how they were beginning to weave together. We’re very excited to see the next part. You don’t get an 11 minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival for making a meh movie.
That’s fine if you disagree with me. We’re not all going to get the same experience. I do appreciate the visuals and use of practical effects.
I seen it today and I'm looking forward to chapter 2.
Was it great no, but very good. 3 hrs went fast. Looking forward to part 2
I cared about that little boy running away from the Native people and his journey. Hard to gett too involved emotionally at times. I hated many evil characters and liked the good guys. That's a sign of a good movie
I may go watch this great Western movie. Costner definitely is a great movie legend, so in my opinion, he is a great performer
@@irenietracym I appreciate the comment. He’s pretty good in the movie.
I saw it a few days ago. It was slow starting at least the first hour. The movie lasted 3 hours. I believe the reason Chapter 1 dragged on is because it was introducing the characters. I believe Chapter 2 -4 will be much better now that we know the characters.
Saw it; can’t wait for the next chapter.
I loved it. When it was over I thought has it been 3 hrs already
Thanks for the comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Although I had problems with several things in the film, there’s a lot to like about it and I’m sure a lot of people are going to enjoy it as well.
I absolutely love this! I felt the sorrow and pain. I loved the beautiful scenery from the desert to the mountains. It brought me to tears and pride ❤ I loved the way it took me back to my younger days when I was little and listening to my great grandparents and the struggles they had in their lives! I thought it was beautiful and heartwarming and I can’t wait to see Chapter Two ! Great Job Kevin and his wonderful team
Hollywood is not "looking for the next great western." Saying that shows a lack of understanding for the industry. Westerns are rarely made by Hollywood these days. Horizon was a passion project for Kevin for decades, and he couldn't get it made even while he was a big star. He eventually mortgaged his home to get it made.
Thank you for the clarification. I could have said it better. You’re not wrong that they don’t make many of them anymore, but I don’t think it’s off-base for me to say that they hope a film hits and still make money in that genre. Otherwise, they wouldn’t greenlight films like Killers of the Flower Moon. I do appreciate the passion that Costner put into this. You can tell this was a labor of love for him.
@@Boblovesmovies Flowers Moon was horrible. Should have told that story from the FBI's perspective.
Just watched the movie today. Was so looking forward to it. Alas. Then heard there are 4 parts. No thanks. To chopped up and too many questions. Won't be following up on this one. But I am a K. C. fan
@@brucehartline4806 You must not have a very curious mind. A western defeated you intellectually??
Well I saw it and loved the intensity, the cinematic experience, the total cast, surroundings, staging, everything about it. I’m going back again to watch it again so I will every scene in my mind when I see the second chapter .I can’t believe that anyone would say a negative word about this Chapter 1! It was totally magnificent!🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Saw it just a few hours ago. Epic! Can't wait for the upcoming installments. Beautifully shot, written and acted. Great setup for what's to come!
I loved chapter 1. It was non stop action. 3 hours went by fast. Not 1 audience member left there seats. The scenery was stunning. I'm looking forward to chapter 2. I'm sure it will tie into chapter 1. I thought the cast was superb in delivering what Kevin was putting down. BTW He did not quit yellowstone. Horizon is a must see. Be your own judge. I personally loved it!
I saw it yesterday, and I love it. I will agree. It’s very ambitious. Do you think it might have been better to release it in parts that didn’t have multiple stories going on? For example, “Part 1” is about Costner’s story in its full length with a beginning, middle, and conclusion. Then “Part 2” The woman who loses everything and falls in love with the Calvary man. “Part 3:” The Wagon Train. Then “Part 4:” Horozon the final movie when all three plots connect? And if Costner wanted to release this version, he could have edited it with them running concurrently like this as a special “Director’s Cut”.
Thanks for the comment. That’s exactly what I think about how it should have been released. I’m thinking maybe a couple of stories for part one and a couple more for part two. As it is, I think there’s a lot to like in the movie. I think by releasing it that way, it would’ve allowed for more time to get invested in the characters.
@@Boblovesmovies I agree. I think once the audience sees all 4 parts, it will be an incredible experience. However, it felt like watching the first act of a movie without seeing the second act. I loved what I saw, and I actually got really invested in the characters, but I just think the average moviegoer needs to have some form of a conclusion at the end of a movie. I know this is just part 1, but most epic trilogy movies at least have a minor subplot with a conclusion at the end of the film. For example, “The Lord of the Rings” is a very similar style to this film. At the end of “Fellowship of the Ring” it has a somewhat conclusion to a small story thread at the end, but it also ends with Frodo and Sam continuing on without the Fellowship. This doesn’t have that minor subplot with a conclusion before teasing it is moving forward. It just abruptly ends. I believe I would have at least had a small character have a mini story within the film that has an epic conclusion, like sacrificing himself to save the wagon train or something that makes it feels like you at least had some payoff at the end of part 1 to hold you over. I think not having that ending makes it feel more like a tv miniseries in theaters. I’m okay with it, but I feel bad for Costner because I see the ambition, but I don’t think he’ll find an audience until it’s released on “Max” or “Netflix” in all 4 parts.
Lord of the Rings trilogy is a perfect example of how each movie should’ve been structured with certain plot points concluding yet still having an over arching story to continue. My guess is it will find a bigger audience once it hits streaming.
Very good. Beautiful work
Great breakdown of the film. My son and I felt it (with the next films) would be better as an eight part Streaming miniseries.
Read to the end for my take:
I walked away from Chapter I confused and feeling disappointed. It was not at all what I had hoped or expected. I fell asleep at one point, because it was not holding my interest. Some of the portrayals revealed quite dull existences. The settings were stunning at times, which I assume were filmed along the Gila and Colorado Rivers infusing flickering flames of windswept aspens along the ridges and all.
Returning home at 7:15p, I was stone cold asleep by 7:45. Exhausted. (I am a little older than Costner, and I have a heart condition.) My brain and being worked hard to climb to the top of the theatre to view an anticipated plot that did not seem to exist.
Many, including myself at one point, are seeing this first edition as a scrambled, poorly edited, over-worked script with a misdirected and fractured presentation. We are, including the ‘professional’ critics, mistaken. What was presented, though not specifically denoted in a traditional sense, were several trials, trails, and tribulations focused on a destination and destiny - Horizon - by a diverse and eclectic series of adventurists.
There were a few constants. Natives, violence, brutality, deviance, almost universal ignorance of most forms of civility, obsessive cursing (or simply a lack of vocabulary development/education), human failings, and horses. There was a sprinkling of educated elitism with the introduction of the British-like couple, but I doubt those traits endure without a few crushing blows from the realities of the place and times. It was a depiction of several streams of people and possessions rooted in the immigrants to America - both original known as natives and the savage offspring of the Colonies.
This was a brutal portrayal of the birth of a civilization, a society and culture, crawling through its infancy, from different origins but with an almost universal instinct of survival and how to maintain it. I will be there on August 16th to participate as the clash of these trails explode in a place named Horizon and stumble into adolescence on their way to being molded by their culminated pressure chamber of restrictive environment.
Rest assured, I do trust that Mr. Costner will continually increase the brightness within the mind’s eye and the warmth of the hope in hearts of the audiences as he brings about a stunning conclusion in an epic example of the historical Western vision. As for Chapter I? Being blinded by the brilliance of genius can negate the opportunity to be blessed by it. Do not miss the chance offered with Horizon.
Bravo, Mr. Costner. All the best in your future endeavors.
I appreciate the comment and reading your take on the film. I agree that the British couple definitely showed that touch of elitism. I’ll be there for chapter 2 as well despite my feelings of the film. At the end of the day, it’s a well-made film from a production standpoint, it has the pieces to be something special, and I did enjoy many of the performances. I am curious to see how the stories will come together.
lol write a book about it why don’t you. - hmmm 🤔
@@shantishanti1949 Good grief. Snark.
Fair and accurate. Looking forward to part 2.
I appreciate the comment. I’m looking forward to seeing Chapter 2 as well.
You lost me at "it's a very flawed movie." It's not. It has SOME flaws but it's a mostly excellent piece of cinema. If Costner is not able to make Parts III and IV it will be a massive cinematic tragedy.
I appreciate the comment. No problem if you don’t agree with me. We’re not all going to have the same experience with a film. My guess is if he can’t get Chapters 3 & 4 made, that he’ll consider a streaming option. He obviously loves this and I assume he’ll make sure it gets made one way or another.
Part Three is currently filming so has a high likelihood to see release, Part IV is the only one in question and with the box office struggles it's going to be difficult getting funding for it.
I agree
Good review! People may not always agree but it opens up conversation good or not… thanks for your perspective and giving us a chance to hear it
Good review. You sound closer to my opinion than that of the friend I watched Horizon Chapter 1 with. He really liked it, while I was entertained enough to look forward to the sequel.
As for my favorite scene... This movie has the funniest, most relatable romance scene I've watched in a while, and I don't think the humor was intentional.
[The loving starts.]
"Oh, [cripes]. You're gonna wake the kid!"
Always enjoy your videos. You do a great job and get right to the point. I haven’t seen Horizon yet, so I appreciate your comments and will hopefully see it soon.
Thank you very much as always. I appreciate that you continue to watch.
Love that the plot unfolds through a series of ten minutes stories with five or so sets of characters.
Fantastic can’t hardly wait for chapter 2
I completely agree. They should have separated the stories and made each of them independent movies. It was just too much jumping around. Not enough time to invest in all the characters/stories.
Yes, you are correct, hell I thought the little boy who escaped from the Indian raid might have been Kevin Costner because the movie was into an hour before seeing him. I just commented how this movie jumped around like a soap opera. The movie Open Range was the best Costner movie I ever watched.
Saw it yesterday! It was very good. I will watch part two on day of release! And I usually only go to one movie a year....
I appreciate the comment. I’m glad you enjoyed it. For me the flaws dropped the overall film, but like I said in my review, I do think that a lot of people are gonna like this. It’s a genre that needs something epic and it is without a doubt, a well-made film from a production standpoint. I’m actually looking forward to part two as well because I do think the meat of the story will be there. My guess is I’ll probably think differently on this film once I see part two.
Fuck Hollyweird .... this movie was fantastic ...
My husband and I loved this movie. It was 3 hrs long but we didn’t notice, we were totally captivated.
I would have preferred focusing on two story lines rather then all of them. I was distracted and not understanding some of these characters or situations. Loved all the women's roles in this movie. They shined as well as Kevin's story line. All actors were top notch.
I love me a good wagon train, but that storyline was introduced too late in the film to really get me invested. Probably should have saved that for part 2.
I haven’t gotten to see it yet. I still can’t wait. It’s my belief that those of us who liked classic novels will get that this is chapter one. All great novels start slow and introduce the characters and basic storylines before they get truly moving and exciting. Even if all this chapter does is introduce the majesty of the west with a thrilling score it will be more than worth it. Costner is a meticulous producer/director/actor with a crew of top notch pros behind him. My guess it is as close as I will ever get to feeling like I was there. As always I think he is trying to teach us something we all need to learn. Once again, can’t wait to watch. Next week I hope. Great things take time. Be patient. It will be worth it.
Thank you for the true and great comment.
Horizon was WONDERFUL. Loved it. I have saw it twice. I can not wait until August. Hayes Costner debuted his acting debut and was awesome. Kevin Costner does everything well
You can tell from the first few seconds its gonna be good! he takes his time setting it up and makes us wait for "the hook", which happens seconds after he fires his gun. Now you know how this is going to play out, he sets it up marvelously. The younger inpatient crowd will not like waiting for character development and story backline development. But true movie enthusiasts will enjoy and savor the unfolding of the story. Awesome!!!
I liked it, give it a B-....has more of a high end TV mini series feel to it....kinda felt like Lonesome Dove
@@hutch761 I think that’s a fair grade. I agree, it definitely feels like it should’ve been a series as opposed to a movie.
Lonesome Dove is really good though. Even the later additions were good enough.
It should have been a TV show like Yellowstone but this was well done. I liked some of the characters
Watched it today,🤔Hmmmmmm? Slow Burn Is A Fact! Hopefully It Will Succeed For Kevin Costner! Come On Chapter 2!
I saw it Sunday morning. I enjoyed it and I'm a Western film junkie. That said it felt more like a TV miniseries. It probably might have been better on Hulu or Paramount + as a 8 part miniseries. I'm going to nerd out a bit here. Certain technical aspects of the film i.e. firearm selection was incorrect. There were too many cartridge guns. Those were basically non existant in the 1850's and would not have been seen until the late 1860's. It would have been cap and ball revolvers and single shot muskets/rifles.
There have been a lot of people comment saying the same thing, that it would’ve been better as a series. I agree with you and them. I think it would have gotten a better response than what it did at the box office.
I found it disjointed and hard to follow.
Agreed, boring, slow and utterly uninteresting.
Worst edited movie ever.
Exactly my review. Very disjointed.
I went into the movie with the understanding that this was going to be part one of a four-part series, so I wasn't disappointed. I noticed some of the same things you mentioned in regard to the time span between scenes. One example would be when Caleb meet's Costner's character after his bath. How did he just leave a house in the middle of nowhere and then be in the middle of the town? So that was a little confusing unless Costner's character took a two-hour bath? But all in all, I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to Chapter two in August.
I wouldn’t sit through it again. But I will go see the rest of the chapters.
The idea of sitting three hours to watch a western is a task and a half for me. I have no issue with longer movies but I’ve just never had a western that has captivated my attention. I’ve seen some video though and I can tell production and cinematography is definitely good.
The production is definitely well done. I’m like you, I don’t mind longer movies but the ones that don’t capture my attention. You can definitely feel the runtime.
You didn't like Tombstone??
I'm your huckleberry.
Tombstone is great. I haven’t seen it in a while. You just made me want to go watch it again.
Wow man….you chinese?
I really didn't feel the length of the film. It held my attention throughout. I can contrast it with Killers of the Flower Moon, where I was almost desperate to escape the theater when it was done.
loved every minute. This was the fastest 3 hours since LOTR. I found myself getting quite emotional about 40 minutes into the movie and that was a surprise. I enjoyed the different storylines and this was not a "mix bag" for me. I'm all in for part 2.
I’m glad you enjoyed the film. At the end of the day, that’s all that really matters. I enjoyed it for the most part and really liked the first 40 minutes. I had problems with other parts of the movie that dropped my overall rating for it. I’ll still be watching part two.
Thanks man, shared with my buddy that I was going to see this with. We might wait for streaming. Our AMC is only showing it in small theatre only digital. Feels like a little suppression to me right out the gate. Appreciate the honesty.
I appreciate the comment. Like I said there’s a lot to like in the movie. I just felt that there were several things that caused me to have mixed feelings about it.
Ambitious and a mixed bag 🎯🎯🎯 spot on
What sucks is the pieces are there. It has everything that you would want in a western, but its flaws hold it back from achieving its ambitious goal.
Maybe Costner's story could have had its seeds in the Civil War, my point being: the conflict was so immense and tragic, it gave incentive for people to move west and start a new life where the regional split was not so defining. For that matter, how about another good Civil War movie? Did "Gods and Generals" do damage to that category? It was turgid and pretentious, a disastrous follow-up to "Gettysburg." Ted Turner wanted to prop up the South: revisionism.
I’d love to see a new Civil War film. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good one.
I really enjoyed it. Love Westerns and loved this one. The scenery was stunning . The cast was incredible. Excited for 2 & 3. Thank you Kevin Costner...finally story worth watching!
I think you did a good honest review! I'm going to see it next week...
Thank you for the kind words. Although it didn’t connect with me the way I had hoped it would, I hope you really enjoy it.
Absolutely Wonderful Movie
Cant wait to watch the next one.Go see for yourself you will love it.
I concur with your evaluation of the film. I would also note that its three-hour duration made it challenging to watch, especially since, as you mentioned, the multitude of characters made it difficult to form an emotional connection with any of them. The narrative jumped around, and some parts did not cohere well into a storyline. While there were standout moments, the overall flow was hard to follow, and my attention wavered. The visuals were stunning, yet the character development and plot were notably weak. If I had known it was the first in a four-part series, I might have been more forgiving. However, it wasn't widely known that this was the first installment; the poster only indicated that the second part would release in August, with no reference to further sequels.
Great movie,,Kevin Costner made a good decision leaving Yellow Stone as the show is going down hill fast starting from season 4 into 5,,hopefully the last part of season 5 will turn it around..But definitely looking forward to the next Horizon movie!
@@gregpolutanovich1774 I’m glad you enjoyed the movie. Despite my above average rating, I’m still gonna go see part two. I think that’s where the meat of the plot is going to be and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with a couple of the stories.
The 1st 2 seasons of Yellowstone were pretty good then it sorta took a nosedive. 1883 was good but kinda disjointed with too many back and forth decisions by Sam Elliots character. Also the Elsa character loved Enis so much that within weeks of his death she falls in love with an Indian. Faith Hills character would have been Knicks on her ass for talking back to a man in that time period.
I saw it tonight. LOVED it! Can't wait for part 2
I enjoyed it! It’s blatantly obvious this is a Part One, which is a double edged sword. It’s exciting to wait for the next movie but it also doesn’t hold its own as a single film.
But unlike Dune we have to wait two months and not three years for the next part!
@@JustinFeyereisen absolutely!
I'm debating on seeing this movie today. Thank you for your review.
I enjoyed it for the most part and I’m looking forward to seeing part two, but I did have some issues with it. If you see it, I do hope you enjoy it.
@Boblovesmovies
Awesome, sir! Thank you so much. I'll let you know what's I thought about the film after I go see it.
I found it very difficult hearing the dialogue therefore I lost the plot points. It moved all over the place. I couldn't put two and two together.I know they wanted to show what was going on at the same time or close to the same time to show struggle going on everywhere.
Sometimes I wasn’t sure if storylines were going on at the same time. In fact, I’m still not sure.
Yes, the story did jump around geographically to introduce us to the saga. I suggest you think a bit about the white settlement of the West during the Civil War and go see Chapter 1 again. I’m a westerner. The landscapes presented informed me of story location, so I got it when the story shifted from snowy Montana and Wyoming to the dry, beautiful vistas of New Mexico. -- I loved Chapter 1 and will see it again before Chapter 2 is released. Thanks go to Kevin Costner for beauty of this gift to us.
I think you're experience was close to mine. The time jumps meant I had to regain my footing to see where I was in whatever story they transitioned to. I felt like I was watching the beginning of a mini series. The cinematography was gorgeous for the most part but my local theatre screen size didn’t do it justice. I never got that awe inspired feeling from the vastness. Three hours is a long time to sit for a movie so I was left wanting for more story. When Costner shows up is great in terms of what I was expecting. Finally, I was surprised/glad he held back on the true nature of the horrific violence. The scalphunters scene I was thinking it would be like Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian.
Appreciate you sharing your experience. I’ve been getting all types of reactions in the comments and I’ve enjoyed reading what everybody thought about the film.
spot on. i really wanted to love this. thought it was decent, ill definitely be there for part 2. i think this would have been a better tv series, the plot and characters could have been fleshed out more
I really wanted to love it as well. I think all the pieces are there and I agree this probably would’ve been better on TV in order to flesh everything out.
@@normie1970 it does have the Yellowstone vibe but this series looks much better than Yellowstone even though I haven't seen the show yet.
Took my 85 year old mom to see it today. Packed theatre. Yes mostly older folks. They finally had a reason to get out and go to a movie.
I hope she enjoyed it.
When there are so many "trash" movies around it is a real treat to see a movie like this. I saw it and enjoyed it, I'm looking forward to the next movie.
I went to see Horizon Friday. I thought it was a great movie. Can’t wait for chapter 2 to come out in August.
This reminds a little of "How the West Was Won" (1962). a GREAT MOVIE about several generations moving west. This is Four stories about different people moving west. This episode introduces you to all the players. Good movie!
Yes, the movie was long but the scenery was so beautiful and the acting was amazing that I was glued eben though I couldn't hear alot of the dialogue
I agree with you on those points. I thought the production quality was extremely well done. Lots of good visuals in this movie.
The only thing you need to know is, Get yourself to the Cinema and see Horizon for yourself, be your own Critic. It deserves to be seen on the Gig Screen.
Mixed bag? Slow burn? Very flawed? Perhaps your enjoyment of chapter 1 would have improved if you hadn’t had your critic hat on. -- In my view Horizon Chapter 1 is excellent. I loved it. I plan to see it again before Chapter 2 is released in August. For me the 3 hours flew by; I didn’t want it to end, and thankfully it won’t. Mr. Costner will gift us with 3 more chapters.
Six older adults and all into westerns. We enjoyed it and look forward to the next movie.
I’m glad you all enjoyed it.
It was a great movie, even if it was long. Some of the audio was difficult to understand, but the scenery was beautiful. The production was well done, and the violence was true to history. I hope the characters are tied together in the next episode....didn't care for the jumping around but we will definitely tune in for the next chapter.
I’ll be tuning in as well. I really enjoyed the production quality of the film. I’m assuming they’re going to start bringing the stories together in the next one, but we’ll see.
We seen it today and liked it. Looking forward to Part 2.
Here’s what I’ll say, I want to love this SOOOO much!!
This review sums up my thoughts perfectly!
It had some bright spots and beautiful cinematography (one of the best looking westerns I've seen), but it was a slog to get through. Not enough character depth for you to care about anyone, not enough motivation behind (most of) the characters to move the plot forward. Bad pacing. Major story beats happened in a 45 second montage at the end.
I wanted to love it, but it was an overly ambitious film that just didn't work for me.
Thank you for the comment. I wanted to love it as well. I was really looking forward to it because I wanted something different and there really is a lot to like. Unfortunately the issues I had held it back for me. I’ll still watch chapter 2, though.
Saw it opening weekend. It was excellent. I plan to see it again in the theater.
It’s shaping up to be a masterpiece maybe not lonesome dove but good as it can be without knowing the other 3 and definitely was not a slow burn. The 3 hours felt like 1 and we were mad it ended it flew by
Have not seen it. The fact you gave it above average score and critics are giving it a 3/10 is making want to check it out. Looks like classic Costner. Based on the trailers the score sounds incredible. And visuals as well.
Thanks for the comment. I appreciated the work and love that clearly went into it. As I said, the things that worked were very good, but the flaws brought it down for me. I do think that it’s worth seeing and I am interested to see Chapter 2.
I heard it takes over an hour before Costner even hits the screen.
It’s pretty close to an hour give or take a few minutes.
You absolutely go and support this film. I thought it was a great first part of a much bigger story. It seems that the people who didn't care for it went in expecting a self-contained three-act story and that's not what it is. It's Horizon PART I.
It was a little slow but I think it really sets it up for part 2, I’m really thinking part 2 is going to be amazing
I’m looking forward to seeing where Part 2 goes. I’ll be there when it releases.
I as a veteran thought it was great! Alot of good brushstrokes. And it was a crazy fast hope you can keep up! If your under 40 with that attention span good luck! Loved it!
I just got home framing seeing the movie. I wanted to see what the buzz was on CZcams about “Horizon”.
I really liked the movie and I’m looking forward to the other movies. I would second everything that you said in the episode.
Life was tough in the American West. I had just re-watched “A Million Ways To Die In The West”. That movie was a farce compared to this new movie. However, “Horizon” does have some of the same qualities as “Million Ways To Die” in dealing with the harshness of the West.
Kevin Costner does a great job of getting the most from his cast. He has always done a great job with his Native American actors but also with his non-Native actors.
Without opening credits, I found my self trying to remember names of actors throughout the film. Other than himself, Costner looks for character actors that he can get the most from in their performances.
Looking forward to August now!
I found it to be a flawed film, but I do think there was a lot to like. I did enjoy the story for Costner’s character. I’ll be watching part two as well.
I really liked it. I didn't feel it hard to keep up with moving from plot line to plot line nor did the time jumps bother me. The film did say 1859 and then 1863 after the jump
Must see ! Great movie! Can’t wait for #2
I think your take is accurate, I enjoyed the experience overall. I do appreciate what the film is trying to do. My initial reaction is that it’s sort of lonesome dove in a Costner style, so we’ll see how this plays out but I’m definitely interested in the story and enjoying watching the movie despite so of the hangups that you accurately noted.
Thanks for the comment. I’m interested to see where it goes as well. I plan on going to see chapter 2 when it’s released.
I liked the show very much. I can't wait until Episode 2 is available. A bit fragmented with so many individual story lines.
Well, I've been watching western movies for over 60 years and I just love them. Like Coster himself, I loved movies like "How the West Was Won", "The Searchers", "Upon a Time in the West" and the. epic TV series 'Centennial'. This one.....well, I must admit I was disappointed. In the first 40 minutes we got action but no character development. Heck, I still don't know the names of three quarters of the characters names. That's fatal in the movie. You have to get to know the characters. Also, people have mentioned that the movie 'jumps around a lot'. I agree not only in 'time' but geography. Occasionally you get "Montana" and then "Wyoming" and the fact that the movie starts in 1859.Ok, but later on we see '1863' being chiselled into the rock by the pioneers. Ok, now we have jumped five years! I wanted to LOVE this movie but, I don't know. "It's all over the place". Great photography, not enough character development though and not half as good as 'Dances with Wolves'. I MAY see the other parts. I don't know.
Thanks for the comment. I’ve had a lot of people say that they loved it and a lot of people who felt like yourself. I don’t remember any of their names either. I wanted to love it too, but the flaws took it down to above average for me. I was really hoping for more, but I will watch Chapter 2.
It was scattered and underdeveloped. Tbh, it should have been a 10 episode 4 season show. It was long, but somehow short at the same time. Not enough character development. Lot of guns. Looks great, but not worth seeing in the theater. Shouldve been a show.
I think this is a good and honest review. I am invested in this series on the big screen though
I appreciate the feedback. I will say the production quality is really good and it looks good on the big screen. I’ll be checking part two out once it’s released.
Now I need an explaination of each story line with spoilers. I missed a lot
Three hours felt like five. Way too many characters with names I couldn't remember. It needed to be a miniseries.
It's not dumbed down as many films today if you're a big fan of westerns you'll love this film it has Ford and Hawks western DNA all over it
Its like multiple western movies connected in one
3 hours i'll never get back. i fell asleep twice ...my wife had to wake me..the best part of the movie was the popcorn......i came away with one thought ...kevin .costner gave up yellowstone to make this?????
I had a couple of other people make the same remark about Yellowstone.
