- Kevin Costner's HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA is one of the most ambitious film projects in the entire history of cinema. In this honest review, I talk about the film and its place in the American Western pantheon. Is this Kevin Costner's legacy?

I saw this last night and loved it. I also went in begrudgingly based on the reviews and the length but ended up being transfixed from beginning to end. I wasn't bored for a second. I hope people ignore the reviews and see it
The tepid reviews are actually really worrying to me because I'm realizing how lazy, stupid, and shallow many of the "critics" have become. I said this elsewhere: give people a choice between a well-prepared steak dinner and a gas station sandwich and too many people will choose the gas station sandwich.
At the end of the day I suppose it doesn't matter much because the movie exists and I get to enjoy it, but it's a sad time for our culture when we lap up mediocrity and feed the worst practices.
MANY OF THE "CRITICS" ARE PAID OFF BY COMPETING STUDIOS AND DISTRIBUTORS TO TORPEDO CERTAIN MOVIES.
@@CerealAtMidnighttotally agree. I am seeing it later this week, and can’t wait. I just recently watched OPEN RANGE for my first time. I loved it so much and is now one of my favorite Westerns of all time. And that’s saying something, as it’s my favorite genre. I probably own hundreds of Westerns (and that’s not even counting TV Westerns), and have probably watched a thousand.
Thanks for the heartfelt review, Heath. Can’t wait to see it and discuss it more.
Agree about Open Range, excellent movie. Excited to see Horizon next week too.
Western fan but not a Kevin Costner fan with a couple of exceptions, I saw this today and loved it. I absolutely could have marched right back into that theater and watched another 3 hours part 2. I genuinely cared about these characters and what happens to them. If you love westerns or epic cinematography go see it on a big screen, don't listen to the naysayers complaining about the length or other things.
I’m soooooo glad someone finally has a positive review! I’m 26 and grew up watching westerns with my dad. Horizon was great! I hate how our society has such a short attention span that they won’t give a great movie a chance. I hope we get to see all 4 parts.
Glad to see many oved it ! It's a masterpiece ! All the French Public will back up Costner as they usually do cuz otherwise it's a typical american market movie ..
Please ignore the critics, they have no idea. Its a masterpiece. It will stir every emotion in your body: it was traumatic, dramatic, funny, sad, dusturbing and romantic. No CGI and truly authentic. Time flies and Im gripped by the story. Can not wait for part 2.
Have to scratch my heads with some of the critics...this was truly something else.
I just saw it
@@TheCryptoKeeper And?
@@deeghanty9939 you never saw it if you thought it was funny
@@deeghanty9939 are you going to delete every message. You asked me.
This movie is absolutely a 10/10 masterpiece
I am not crazy about Costner's politics, but he is always leaves it at the door and delivers great cinema. I am looking forward to making this film part of my July 4th weekend! Thanks for your take, Heath!
I'm actually stoked for this flick.
I'm seeing it Saturday in IMAX!!
It looks like it would be amazing in I-max ! But I don’t want to drive an hour to get to the nearest I-max theater. Gonna see it Tuesday.
So I just saw part one this afternoon and I was blown away. I couldn't get enough of it and I certainly didn't want it to end. I can't wait for part two in August.
I've already pre-ordered parts one and two on 4K from Amazon Canada.
After I saw your review the other day I was pumped!
I saw it today. Good movie! I go to about one movie a year..... but will be going to see chapter two on release date in August!
Excuse me; i write to you from Colombia: were there good public in the cinema?
Just got out of the theater. I'm floored by Horizon. I expected a slow burn. When people say "nothing happens", or that it's "boring", then I know it's the kind of movie I'm looking for. Two of my favorites are Blade Runner 2049 and Apocalypse Now Redux, two epic movies that were deemed too long. The funniest thing that's been said about it is : "I can't help but feel that Part 1 is for characters and stories to be put in context, that it feels like the beginning of something bigger." Duh! It is Kevin Costner's best work and I am craving for Part 2. Part 3 is being shot, so we know we'll get this one too. It is the most beautiful western I've ever seen. Unforgiven is my all time favorite. I love the Sergio Leone flicks too, but I prefer this kind of cinema. Masterful. Costner doesn't seem to care if it ultimately fails moneywise. I think that it's the critics that have failed big time!
Performances were incredible… great cast… I did not feel like 3 hours to me .. excited for part 2 .. cinematography was amazing
I really enjoyed seeing it last night. Cant wait to get it at home.
Wow I'm stunned, the concept sounded interesting but wasn't sure how it was going to end up. This is really high praise
It's certainly higher praise than I'm seeing from a lot of outlets, but I adore westerns, history, and movies that have things to say about the human condition. This ticks all my boxes and surpassed what I expected.
I LOVED THIS MOVIE. Felt like a real trip to the movies. I cannot wait for Part 2.
Bravo on your review. I loved it
Whoa! Im surprised but happy for the review! Im def going to see it Heath! Im really glad for the positive review! We need more movies like Horizon!
Absolutely loved it, and can’t wait for Chapter 2 and the rest.
Thank you for propping up The Postman. I love it and never felt it was too long, even after multiple viewings. I look forward to Horizon.
i think alot of younger people my age dont vibe with these movies and its sad. i been told westerns are boring from alot of people and i just feel like people dont give these movies a chance. looking forward to this one
Great review!! You hit the nail on the head. I agree with everything you said. This movie was an absolute breath of fresh air to me. An epic movie in scope and promise.
It seems to me that the early reviews came from people who either went in with preconceived notions and held firmly into their bias, or flat out didn’t pay attention. To write the words insinuating that this movie was in any way boring is absolutely ridiculous.
Thanks for the great review! Going to see it on a movie-date with my wife on tuesday, and been listening to the score non stop. Being a Costner fanatic, I s as going to see it no matter what, but I’ll be honest the mixed reponse got me scared… Now, you hyped me so much. Thanks again.
Finally saw it last night, and I have to tell you, it was everything you said and more… I was transported.
Well Heath, now I'm very excited for this. The reviews have been pretty meh, saying it's meant for TV or something. But I place westerns on a pedestal typically and your thoughts on this just got me very hyped.
The reviews for this movie have been incredibly shallow. I'm really not sure what has happened to film criticism over the last few years. I think a new generation of critics has entered the scene and they're raised on Marvel movies, video games, and endless streaming shows. I predate all of that, and this movie is a return to a form that hasn't existed in a good long while.
@CerealAtMidnight I think we're the same age and you couldn't have articulated my sentiments any better. In the last several years, I think Oppenheimer and Dune Part 2 are the only films that got me truly excited in the way that I would be 20+ years ago. Horizon seems like the event movie I've been waiting for and it will be a shame that it won't get the audience it deserves.
Right after your why Chinatown matters video, I watched it when my copy came. There's no way Hollywood would ever make that now. Legacy cinema matters more than ever. Thanks for doing what you do.
@CerealAtMidnight Hi Heath, I'm a regular here and always enjoy watching your videos. However, I find your comments on the supposed shallowness and stupidity of "critics" concerning. That is the same kind of rhetoric used by Marvel superfans and casual movie goers to deflect criticism and defend their enjoyment of largely commercial and mainstream cinema. "Critics" are not a singular entity nor do they exist on some ivory tower (many of them living on low wages and a love of cinema). In fact, some of these supposedly "new critics" who dislike the film are actually ones that contribute to some of the blu-rays you might review and have been writing on film for decades. I watched this movie today, and while I mostly enjoyed it, many of the criticisms leveled at the film aren't fabricated from nothing. The film has four narrative threads structured similarly to an episode of TV and the film ends with an *extended* trailer for the next film rather than an actual conclusion. Don't let your love for a movie foster hate or resentment for a group of people. Critics are not your enemy.
@@hunterwilliams4250 critics may not be the enemy, but critics from back in our day often had to have some sort of minimal credentials. I know you won't receive what I'm saying right now, but Roger Ebert was respected and listened to first because he earned it (and was well educated and was the critic for the Chicago Sun-Times) and continued to earn it. It's a different landscape now because many critics are just bloggers without any sort of real credentials or reason to listen to them. I haven't read any reviews on Horizon but I can certainly imagine. Are they the enemy? No. Are they highly predictable and prone to judging movies based on what they aren't rather than what they are? Often yes. I don't put much stock in the bloggers these days.
I felt the same about this movie. Thanks for the review.
So Glad t have heard your reiew ! Got a new suscriber from France !!
Will you go watch it again ?? I did tonight and I abslutely loved it , that production design my god !
I think I'll go again in a few days, trying to bring ppl on ! Hope it will do ok in France as Costner is loved here. But Western I guess don't appeal too much abroad ..
But the 3rd one is already being shot so we'll get that one at least !
Thanks Costner ! What a legacy !
Fantastic review. Agree with everything you said. What a wonderful film. Loved every second of it.
Well stated. Incredible setup to the saga with a bookend of tragedy from 2 perspectives that aren’t really the main story lines.
There’s such a quilt of various Western era tropes. I can’t wait till the soldiers come back in ep 3 or whenever.
I felt like I was there, living the scenes like Red Dead’s stories on the big screen. Amazing start.
Thanks for your insight on this first part. I will be checking it out! The difficult issue with having 4 parts, is that someone might not have see part 3 or 2, or 1. It’s an extremely tough sell. I do love the ambition and passion behind it.
Great video and analysis! I’m really looking forward to watching it. Unfortunately, I think it won’t do well at the box office😢
Thx Heath. I'll see it when it opens this week is aus. May have missed it otherwise.
Thanks again for a great video, I hope to see the movie this next week. I too love westerns. I just ordered all three Audie Murphy box sets from Kino Lorber for a very reasonable price. To Hell and Back is an inspiration to me as a retired Army Officer. Love your videos.
Just rewatched 1979's Centennial and it does a fine job of telling the history of the West. However, it took twelve episodes to do it. I'm looking forward to the coming chapters of Horizon to see how well he does the same job.
Saw it last night and feel the same as you. I love the long story westerns, Godless and The English. But what a treat to see such an epic on a big screen!
It’s fascinating to me how many people I’ve talked to that find ANY movie with a slower pace “boring.” I know someone that said Oppenheimer was boring and they used a lot of “big words.” Unfortunately there are a lot of simple-minded people that are not deep thinkers that go to the movies.
Glad ya liked it mate . I commented on your tweet before ya went . I'm now play Red Dead Redemption because of that movie lol
So am I! When I got home, I needed to keep the vibe going so I fired up Red Dead.
Great movie. You're so right.
I am taking your word for it Heath. If anyone knows a good western it is you. I might be a little nervous about the three hour time limit but I can do it. Also, Open Range is a very good western.
Like Coppola with Megalopolis, Costner spent his own money to get this made. In press interviews to promote the film he's very aware of the risk he's taking but he believes in it so much that it's worth it for him. Love or hate these types of films, there is something to be said about artists (Welles, Cassavetes, Diesel (Riddick 3), etc.) that spend their own money on projects outside the studio system that they believe in.
I forgot to add Kevin Smith into the mix who made Clerks off of credit cards.
Kevin chipped in $38 million. That wouldn't even cover the TV ad budget.
@@daveclark8337 I think your right. I don't know what the total budget for Horizon Part One alone is (still three more to go) but still 38 mil is a lot of money for anyone to put up on something that's considered to have limited appeal at best in today's theatrical market. Very risky no doubt.
Absolutely love Open Range. I may try to get out and see Horizon in theater. Such a long stretch of time in the summer to be at the theater
Horizon part 1 is no longer than Dances with Wolves..
I really enjoyed this film, definitely felt like a part one but still enjoyed. The characters kept me interested all the way through and my god the cinematography is incredible.
Well, unlike waiting for another season of Yellowstone(years),.you can see part 2 in eight weeks!
For some reason, Kevin Costner has always been the victim of Hollywood snark. When he was making Dances With Wolves, it was being demeaned as "Kevin's Gate" (after Heaven's Gate), and no-one had even seen it!
I like this kind of art being created. It's the antithesis of Franchise moviemaking. One guy puts all his effort and love and money into creating something that he HAS to make, regardless of whether it's what is currently selling.
Maybe it's the old Punk in me, but I think that's what all artists should do - disdain the trends and make what you KNOW is great!
You're so right, he's always been an underdog, even when he was winning Oscars. Everyone was thrilled when Waterworld tanked (pun intended). I suspect it's his ego, which is both a blessing and a curse: a blessing because without a healthy ego, you cannot achieve great things, but it puts you at odds with those who wish to see you fail.
Sold!
Wasn't interested until this review. I'll have to check it out
after reading some comments, how could anyone be surprised that Horizon is a great Western? ALL of his Westerns are great. Silverado, Dances..., Wyatt Earp, Open Range. oh...and don't let someone's politics deprive you of anything.
I’m going to watch it, soonest I can get there is Tuesday. Taking my oldest son (9) and my girlfriend.
Horizon wasn't bad at all, there are a few minor gripes I have with it, but I still enjoyed it overall. It's only the first chapter of 4, so I am excited to see the next parts.
I saw this on a Thursday matinee. I loved loved this movie. Had a low bar due to reviews but this was just wonderful on so many levels. This was just a set up...geez, I'm all in for the second in this series. I have read some reviews that people were confused by storylines. My gosh, they must have the attention span of Dory, not surprising in this TikTok age. The story lines were clearly unique and interesting. I honestly put this up with and probably surpassing Dune2 for my favorite film this year and probably a decade.
I don't understand the negative reviews at all, but your comment about the small attention spans leading to confusion rings true. The movie doesn't take us anywhere that we can't follow. I'm hearing criticisms about both this film and The Bikeriders that aren't valid--people simply not paying attention and then blaming the movie for not holding their hand.
I have tickets to see this on Sunday night. I liked OPEN RANGE a lot more than DANCES WITH WOLVES (or THE POSTMAN or WATERWORLD). No IMAX or Dolby screenings, but they have one screening with Spanish subtitles.
I wish this was playing in IMAX cinemas
Sounds interesting and I'll check it out but the long runtime does have me a little worried. 3 hours is about my limit for watching any movie. Oppenheimer was just right at about 3 hours but Killers of the Flower Moon had me looking at my watch in the last half hour.
if you like westerns here are three you should see...Hostiles, News of the World, and Old Henry.
can't wait to see Horizon.
U got me😊
I just discovered my theater is only going to play the standard version . No Imax.
Que Espetáculo ❤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
An absolute masterpiece sadly I don’t think we will get parts 3 and 4 I hope I am wrong
I think we will
Horizon ruled.
My gut feeling tells me this is gonna bomb hard, like really hard.. no matter if its good or not.
I hope not, but it's far, far away from the kind of mindless crap that clogs up the box office week after week. There are no spaceships, no cars driving on submarines, and no cartoon characters being used to sell products. Really hoping adults show up for some mature storytelling here, but even if they don't, both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are done. They exist, and they will be seen and appreciated in time.
@@CerealAtMidnight I hope i am very wrong too, i always root for projects like this but the market is so weird right now and i don´t think its the time for a western.
Johnny Depp´s Lone Ranger was a financial disaster and Johnny has a huge fan base.
Ironically, we're living in a modern golden age for the western, but getting people to get out of their houses and support something in a movie theater like we did just a few years ago is a real tough proposition. We complain about the lack of variety in our movies, but we're voting with our wallets every day.
@@CerealAtMidnight agree!!
@@CerealAtMidnight I called it, only 3 days later and already news of it beeing a massive flop and everyone rips it apart.. thats not gonna end well.
I don't know if people, generally, are hardwired towards a given attention span ... I think it varies from person to person, like everything else in this world... but I would love to be able to get a Coke or an Icee (or a Coke Icee) prior to the movie, and not worry about whether or not I am going to need to miss five minutes to take a wee. But an argument against a hardwired attention span might be made, noting not only, say, TITANIC or the LORD OF THE RINGS movies (especially the Director Cuts), but also the Roadshow Spectaculars from the past, such as GONE WITH THE WIND, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN HUR, or THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I do wish that the more recent ones would follow the lead of the older ones by adding an intermission. If someone's movie is already in excess of three hours long, the addition of an extra fifteen minutes to spare the audience the indignity of having to wear Depends or, worse, a catheter, is not exactly going to have any bearing on whether or not they can squeeze in another showing, unless the theater in question has a 24-hour performance cycle.
Since you have said that this one is even bigger than HOW THE WEST WAS WON, a movie I so wish I could see in the original Cinerama, I am intrigued.
There's even a great place to put an intermission in this movie, but unfortunately we don't have them anymore, presumably so theaters can add an extra screening each day. Commerce tops comfort every time.
Speaking of Open Range, I love Open Range. When in the world will we ever get it on Blu Ray!?
It is on blu-ray in the UK.
If it was shot in 3-strip Cinerama or 70 mm Cinerama I might see it.
My theater has very few showings in small screens :(
that still might go to waterworld : D
have you seen Costner's Wyatt Earp? see it if you haven't! it's a big piece of his evolution to Horizon.
*Surprised this was shot in the narrower 1:85 aspect ratio - as the epic vastness of the frontier landscape would've been better conveyed via the more expansive 2:40 scope format (a la 'Dances With Wolves') ☝️🙄
Yes, but you get closer to the characthers with a 1:85 format. I think Costner wanted that for this one. And 1:85 is more suited for tv, and most people will see this on tv.
I know part 2 or chapter. 2 has been made but have 3&4?
Part 3 started production in May.
Epic in scope with an overarching theme and sub stories contained within. Makes you think, reflect and feel. Not dumbed down for the masses. Your average adult American in 2024 has the attention span and comprehension level of a four year old.
Great flick!
Good luck.
It's absolute insanity that someone could watch this movie, and come away from it acting like it isn't great. People get so caught up in things they believe to be "self indulgent" or a dozen other gripes that have NOTHING to do with the movie itself. Like love it or hate it I don't really care, but anyone denying the skill that went into this and what was pulled off is just not a serious person.
(Awesome review btw)
Due to an unexpected bill, I can no longer afford to go to the movies unless someone can pay for me. I want to see this movie but I can't.
Has any other actor made as many top notch films as Costner?
Everyone has a different idea of 'top notch'. But yes, Kevin had a bunch of hit movies back in the 80s and 90s.
I personally would take Clint Eastwood hands down, as both a movie star and a Director. He's the 'Man wth No Name' AND Dirty Harry.
@@daveclark8337Totally forgot about Clint your right
Will it overtake the greatest western EVER, "Once Upon a Time in the West"? We'll see.
This is Costner's magnum opus.
I completely agree with your review of the film. Apart from the story, which is riveting, I felt, maybe for the first time, that I was truely transported back in time. Kevin Costner has managed to create a time machine that puts you directly into the mid to latter part of the 19th century. I have to see this movie again (and again)
Were you under the weather when filming this? You have slightly different sound and energy.
It was past midnight and the whole house was asleep.
Does it feel incomplete? I am worried that 3&4 wont get made and it will ultimately feel incomplete. if they never made Return of the King, Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers would still be good but the franchise legacy would be dead.
Yes it's incomplete, but it's no different from Dune, The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, or any other film that we know is part of a larger series. I remember praying that I would live long enough to see Revenge of the Sith. Hahaha
Everyone is fighting everyone and has enough energy and hatred to do it. Back to Waterworld I will go to understand the players.
Great to see Costner directing again! I'm looking forward to the next three chapters myself as this has been the best film I've seen in the cinemas this year!
However, when it comes to length, I agree with you to some degree. A 3.5 hour film like "Killers Of The Flower Moon" flew by and I didn't even notice and feel the length, while "Oppenheimer" felt like 20-30 minutes could've been cut. It all depends on the filmmaker in my opinion!
Costner is one filmmaker that I trust with the length!
This is a novel in movie form. Go at it like that and you’ll be alright.
Great film! Can't wait for part 2.
Costner wants to correct the genre by making this
What a great American saga from both perspectives!
I could have left this movie and went straight to part 2.
Epic movie making!
I can’t wait to see it! Really glad you liked it.
Just got home from watching this movie. My biggest grip about the movie was the theatre was very hot.
It is a western, it is long, it is the first movie of a saga. Keeps those things in mind while you watch the movie.
It was a good movie. It had me entertained the whole way through, and I would be willing to watch it again under different circumstances.
"There's no way to talk about this movie in terms of what's actually in it, because actually EVERYTHING is in it."
Well ... everything except for a conclusion. It's 3 hours of set-up. Perhaps EVERYTHING will be in it when the other parts come out, but there's a lot missing from this particular film.
We know that going in. When Frodo and Sam wander out of the sunlight and into the shadow of Mordor at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, there was ZERO discussion about how it wasn't a complete movie. We know what we're signing up for when we buy a ticket for a movie that's part 1 of a saga.
Also, it's not just 3 hours of set up. There are character arcs that are fully completed. Just not those of our main characters.
Saw Horizon today. A great experience. I'll be there for chapter 2.
No, you won’t because there won’t be a chapter 2 anymore😂😂😂😂
@@ploppill34 what does that mean
He’s trolling you
Finally! A positive review on this one from someone i genuinely trust. Glad to hear that it's lived up to the hype of truly being a Western epic.
I am definitely going to see all 4 chapters.
Since there won’t be any more made, no, you won’t😂😂😂😂
This is the highest endorsement in my opinion. Can't wait to see it.
Horizon is a excellent start to a great movie series..Looking forward to seeing the 2 part as more of the story unfolds .The first movie is a build up introducing the characters and story lines.
Whether you feel like you would like it or not, it is worth supporting to break the monopoly of un-inspired re-treads that Hollywood continues to push down our throats. Costner self-funded and bridged the other funding with private funding, not studio money... Think of your $10 ticket as a donation to the arts. I went in with low expectations and came out extremely satisfied.
I’m sorry man but the structure of this film is a mess and it needs some work in the edit. I suspect that it will all come together for the next part but good grief with the three concurring stories I was confused what was going on and how certain relationships worked?
this movie reminds me of the great western films my grandparent generation grew up on
Great film, gripping story telling and I'm glad to say our cinema was pretty full particularly for a Monday night. A movie for the people, not the critics (although the critic in The Daily Telegraph loved it).
Think you’d be happy to know the showing I went too a few days ago was packed. A lot of older couples went to see it 40-60 range. I was super surprised by the turn out and I agree with your thoughts on the movie.
I just saw the movie. It was an amazing experience. If you enjoyed the movie, read Empire of the Summer Moon.
Short answer…..it’s good, really good, yes it’s 3 hours, and could have easily sat for the next 3 hours. Go see it. If only because they say not to, but also to support a man who has given us so many great movies
Costner's greatest achievement? As far as a western movie, he directed, absolutely! This movie is cinematic gold!!! This Chapter 1 is phenomenal and flawless! How anyone could ask for anything more is ridiculous. When this is all said and done, I believe this will be the greatest western work to ever be put on film! Go see this movie! No CGI, just awesome, realistic, period-correct movie making. EPIC!!!
Hopefully the studio doesn’t sabotage its success by sending it to streaming before part 2 comes out.
I'm still not seeing it
