    Tony built mark 8- 41 suits while not sleeping/tinkering. That's why when Pepper asked if the suit was like mark 8 or something he looked down and it was 42.

    Love this film. We've got the twists - Trevor Slatery was a stitch - we've got a dangerous enemy with a neat gimmick, and we get to see Tony Stark is still a hero without the suit. He really is the guy who built the first iron man armor in a cave, with a box of scraps. AND on top of all that I love how he's still struggling with ptsd and trauma from everything he's been through. It's a great story.

      Yes at the time, nobody understood and was just about "wtf, the mandarin is fake or just a white psychopath?" But no, a future movie showed us all wrong. And no, dont tell me they actually made that mistake. Marvel movies are planed over 10 years in the future. So while making iron man 3 they already knew that a certain movie will be made.

      I love fake Mandarin (he's an actooooooor!), the comic character is just another yellow peril stereotype 😇 The only good thing about the "true" Mandarin in the MCU is that he's played by Tony Leung, a far better actor than 99% of Hollywood 🤪 Even then, the script gave him nothing except ye olde evil dad trope, oh well he was paid a lot I hope.

    17:33 y’know, it’s only watching this video that I really “get” this scene. It’s the first moment in all these movies that Tony really *internalizes* that he doesn’t need the suit to be a hero. He panics cause he thinks the suit won’t be ready, but he’s The Mechanic- that suit works because of him, not the other way around.

  • @tofu_golem
    @tofu_golem Před rokem +5

    A lot of people complained that technically, other people saved the day instead of Tony.
    This story is about PTSD, and part of the story is that Tony had to learn to rely on others. For the record, he never entirely got over this trauma. This and the trauma from the first movie continue to affect his decisions from here on out, both for better and for worse.
    I love the "gluten-free waffles" line. Tony Stark it's exactly the kind of scientifically literate person who should know better, but would fall for stupid fads like that anyway.

    Every suit Tony makes... he gives it a Mark number. The first one he made in the cave was mark 1 then the non-painted that Rhodes had stolen is mark 2. It goes on like that.
    Since the beginning of the movie he kept saying "Mark 42". But 42 that's a huge gap in number!!
    That's what he has been doing in his spare time building and building new suits. They even showed a little glimpse in the movie(like a tunnel/in the ground) that opens up...this is where he keeps all his suits.

    • @DragonbIaze052
      @DragonbIaze052 Před rokem +7

      Iron Man ends with the Mk 3, Iron Man 2 has the Mk 4 and 5, and Avengers has the Mk 6, if I remember correctly? That means he's made about 35-36 new suits of armor between Avengers and now, which is one every few days at the absolute minimum.

  • @MikeHesk742
    @MikeHesk742 Před rokem +7

    I liked the Mandarin twist in this movie, though I know a lot of fans hated it. We're so used to the generic "mega unstoppable terrorist" trope in movies like this that nothing seemed odd about the fact this Mandarin guy didnt have any kind of concrete motive or goal (I blame Dark Knight Joker for that one), or reason for "targetting" these various random locations. And instead just makes vague jabs at the evil westerners and tenuous explanations for why he "chose" each location to attack. It's a pretty clever twist for it to be a terrorist "by numbers", created by a think-tank to get americans riled up, and effectively control the war on terror.
    I think the people saying "what a waste, he seemed like the perfect gritty terrorist" are missing the point. Him seeming like the perfect generic terrorist is exactly the point, he's too perfect at being randomly sinister and he has zero motive, he's a phony.

    Ben Kingsley (Trevor/Mandarin) is such an awesome actor. He won an Academy Award for playing Mahatma Ghandi in 1982 when he was 39. He was 68 or 69 when he made this film. Wrap your mind around that. 😀

    Mark 1-7 were destroyed during the Malibu Mansion attack, the other 34 suits, the so called Iron Legion, was kept underneath the Mansion in a giant hall of armor, which you could even briefly see at the start of the movie.
    Tony built all of these suits in the few months between Avengers and this film. Basically any time he got anxiety about a certain threat he couldn't protect Pepper from, he built a suit to do exactly that.

    yah, shane black also wrote the lethal weapon movies and he really likes the action/christmas movie combo. this feels much more like a lethal weapon movie with the characters having to rely more on conventional weapons in the finale.
    this movie was a really nice gesture by rdj... before, when rdj was an unhireable mess (prison, drugs, etc), he kind of made a COME BACK movie - that movie was kiss kiss bang bang and that was written and directed by shane black. *you should totally watch that movie btw* . and that was the movie that kind of made jon favreau casting rdj as iron man a possibility. rdj's current success in hollywood kind of owes its existence to shane black and kkbb. and i think this was kind of a thank you from rdj to shane. rdj spreading the wealth. and you love to see stuff like that. that's just nice.

    i love this movie, it not only shows the problems Toni had after the Avengers movie, it also shows that he is still a person, with feelings, and he doesnt need the iron man suit to be someone. yes the suit makes him stronger , but only his knowledge produced all of this, so for me it says: trust yourself, improve what you already capable off, trust in yourself and dont let yourself down if something bad happens to you

    One thing I really like about this one is how much time Tony spends out of his armour. It really emphasises that _he_ is Iron Man, it isn't just the suit. Of course the suit is his greatest weapon (if you don't count intangibles like his intellect) but even without it he is still a hero.

    Fun challenge for you: Both Trevor (the "Mandarin" actor) and Harley (the kid) show up in later Marvel films, as their characters. Trevor's easy, as he introduces himself in his next appearance. Harley is a little more challenging, as he stays quiet for his entire next appearance (and, as his appearance was several years later, he's grown up quite a bit). Do you think you can spot either of them?

  • @ieyke
    @ieyke Před rokem +3

    Before you watch any more MCU movies, I highly recommend watching 'Marvel One Shot: All Hail The King'.
    That's something you've actually been missing this whole time. The Marvel one shots are little short films that happened between the MCU movies. They only did a few of them early on in the MCU in Phase One and phase two.
    Most of them are fairly inconsequential and don't really matter, but 'Marvel One Shot Agent Carter' serves as the final episode for the Agent Carter TV series, basically telling you how Peggy went from her previous job to founding SHIELD.
    But the most important one is 'All Hail The King', which should have really been the post credit scene for Iron Man 3, and further elaborates on the circumstances of this movie, tells you the fate of Trevor Slattery, and sets up the truth, which becomes relevant later on in Phase 4.
    This movie actually does tell you the truth indirectly, and most people (including you) actually miss it, and don't fully understand what's happening, Because by the very nature of the story, it's something that the characters in the story don't understand and are trying to hide.... So it makes sense that a lot of the audience doesn't understand it either.
    But 'All Hail The King' makes it clear, and then in Phase 4 they fully explore it.
    I would actually suggest doing an entire video where you just watch all of the Marvel One-Shots back to back.
    I think All Hail The King is actually the final one, so I think that would put you caught up.
    The One-Shots, in order:
    - The Consultant (set between the end of The Incredible Hulk, and the post credits scene of The Incredible Hulk)
    - A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Thor's Hammer (set between Iron Man 2 and Thor)
    - Item 47 (set immediately after The Avengers)
    - Agent Carter (set after the events of Agent Carter Season 2.
    Agent Carter Season 1 takes place about a year after Captain America:The First Avenger.)
    - All Hail The King (set after Iron Man 3)
    Now, the one problem that you might encounter is that I don't know where you can watch these if you don't own the blu-rays or DVDs.
    I assume that they're on Disney plus, but I don't know that for sure. And they are probably on CZcams, or on Dailymotion or on Vimeo.
    I don't know offhand.

    RDJ did such an amazing job portraying Tony's PTSD. You figure people like Black Widow, Captain America, Hulk, not to mention Thor, wouldn't have a problem with PTSD. Romanov and Rogers are the only two "normal" humans, and both of them have had extensive military training and conditioning. Stark is just a brilliant guy who built a suit. Enjoyed the hell out of this one. Despite this being the last standalone Iron Man movie, we get a lot more screen time and growth out of RDJ over the rest of the MCU. If you need more Trevor, check out the Marvel One Shot “All Hail the King.” It’s about 10 minutes, they did them as shorts to stitch things together here and there, and it’s more Ben Kingsley.

    Hey, Addie! The fanbase was sharply divided over this Iron Man installment for two major deviations from the comics: the Mandarin and AIM. Ben Kingsley was admittedly hilarious as Trevor and the revelation that he's merely a paper tiger facade for Killian was completely unexpected. However, the Mandarin is Tony's nemesis and one of Marvel's great villains. When he was reduced to a laughingstock, it frustrated all the expectations the trailers had built up for a live-action showdown between these major opponents. The other disappointment was that AIM was reduced to a corporation run by Killian when it's supposed to be a major terrorist organization comparable to Hydra but comprised of rogue scientists! The movie also uses PTSD as a substitute for Tony's notorious alcoholism but this deviation nevertheless helps to ground the character and humanize him for audiences. The plot is adapted from the "Extremis" storyline written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Adi Granov which propelled the character into the 21st-century.
    The Mandarin is a top-tier Marvel villain who deserves a special note. He was created by Stan Lee in 1964 debuting in issue # 50 of the title that was running Iron Man's adventures at the time called "Tales of Suspense". He goes by many aliases such as Eugene Khan, Zhang Tong and Tem Borijgin but none know his real name. He is the bi-racial product of an aristocratic Chinese family from pre-Communist China who claim descent from Genghis Khan. Orphaned at an early age, he was raised by a bitter dowager aunt whose hate for the Communist regime was exceeded only by her hate for the West! A boy prodigy, she spent every last bit of his fortune training him in science, history and combat until they could no longer pay taxes and were evicted by the government from his ancestral estate. Now a proud young man with a grudge against the world, he explored a hidden valley none dare enter and made a remarkable find: a spaceship with the corpse of a dragon-like pilot from a world called Maklu IV. This find explains the motif of intelligent dragons in Chinese folklore. He spends years mastering the technology which confers upon him longevity and the ten control rings that power the ship. Each ring has a specific function and can be wielded independent of the ship as weapons. He easily seizes the area around the valley which draws in the government whom he intimidates into a detente where they agree to shelter him and turn a blind eye to his machinations so long as he doesn't molest China. He moves his center of operations to the Gobi desert and begins his plans for world conquest. More recently, he has modernized his outfit into a legitimate corporation to advance his nefarious agenda. Perceived as a culturally insensitive "yellow peril" stereotype in collusion with the Chinese government, a true rendering of the character would have prevented distribution of "Iron Man 3" in the lucrative Asian market so the Ten Rings became a logo and the Mandarin himself became a joke. Feige attempted to correct this egregious misrepresentation in the One-Shot "All Hail the King" and the movie "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" but still came up short.
    Shane Black, who directed RDJ in the excellent neo-noir "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", handles this entry as if it were more of a techno-thriller than a clash of armored titans like the last two. It's a smart move and a faithful translation of the source material which has Tony out of his armor for most of the film! The relationship with young Harley is amusing and affecting presaging his mentorship of Peter Parker. The destruction of the Malibu mansion and the human chain skydive rescue are thrilling highlights!
    The cast, as always, is excellent headed by Robert Downey, Jr. playing Tony Stark aka Iron Man for the fifth time now accompanied by his regular stable of Don Cheadle as Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes rebranded as Iron Patriot, Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Jon Favreau as Harold 'Happy' Hogan and Paul Bettany as JARVIS. Paltrow, in particular, gets to perform some amazing action both in and out of some armor! Ty Simpkins as the young Harley Keener, in whose cluttered garage runaway Tony flops, is excellent as an unwitting, pint-sized therapist. Shaun Toub returns for a Yinsen cameo set in 1999. Guy Pearce plays a lean and hungry Aldrich Killian nursing a hateful grudge with a perpetual sneer and running two evil organizations: his company, Advanced Idea Mechanics, which fronts for a mock Ten Rings terrorist cell. Ben Kingsley does a menacing job as the Mandarin and delivers a brilliant comedic turn as sleazy Trevor Slattery. The lovely Rebecca Hall is appropriately tragic as the spurned Maya Hansen. James Badge Dale is savage as the lead Extremis operative Savin. Stephanie Szostak, as another Extremis goon named Brandt, has a vicious throwdown with Tony. William Sadler plays President Ellis, a role he reprises in "Agents of SHIELD", and Miguel Ferrer plays treacherous Vice President Rodriguez. Character actors Spencer Garrett and Dale Dickey have bit parts as a Tennessee sheriff and barfly, respectively.
    TRIVIA:
    1. Shane Black sets every movie he directs at Christmastime and "Iron Man 3" is no different.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. The dragon tattoos on Killian's chest are of the Makluan dragon and Iron Man antagonist Fin Fang Foom!
    2. The red, white and blue armor and Iron Patriot moniker are references to when Spidey villain Norman Osborn wore the suit in command of the Dark Avengers!
    3. The company the accountant hostage worked for, Roxxon, is the Marvel Comics equivalent of Exxon, a multinational petrochemical juggernaut!
    CAMEO:
    1. Stan Lee appears as a gleefully generous judge of the beauty pageant issuing a score of '10'!
    END-CREDIT SCENE:
    1. Tony recounts his adventure to a half-asleep Bruce Banner who protests that his doctorate doesn't qualify him to practice psychiatric therapy before Tony ignores him and goes on an even deeper dive into his childhood! The gag reveals that the entire movie has been a flashback from this session!
    The next chronological stop in the MCU are the first seven episodes of Season 1 of "Agents of SHIELD" followed by the One-Shot featurette "All Hail the King" in which we catch up with Justin Hammer and Trevor Slattery in jail. The featurette is found on the "Thor: The Dark World" blu-ray or on DPlus.

      Why not simply link to the Wiki page which you obviously copy-pasted from, and let anyone who already knows (or wants to) read up there, rather than shoving spoilers in people's faces? IMO, that would be more considerate.

      @@Jessica_Roth Jessica, there are no spoilers. Spoiling entails revealing detailed and critical info ahead of its natural unveiling. The Mandarin concept is introduced in this movie. The MCU Mandarin is a radically different character and a completely inauthentic creation. I am describing the comic book version. Most reactors skip the One-Shots, too, unless they're tipped off in advance. Please cite what else you think has been spoiled. When I wrote up the MCU for fun several years ago, my sources were IMDB and the Marvel Wiki to supplement whatever I didn't know from decades of collecting comics. Many reactors have the good sense to be receptive and appreciative. Despite what you wish to believe, each essay took time to craft and was written so as not to spoil the movies but to educate about the source material. This reactor chooses to ignore everything I write so I wouldn't worry about her world imploding.

      @@oxhine1) Naming characters that will appear in "Agents of SHIELD" is a spoiler. (Not so much as the character whom others usually spoil about, but still.)
      2) Naming characters who appear in the one-shot (and the circumstances they're in) is a spoiler
      3) discussing a major character arc for Tony with *a character we haven't even met yet*. (and which is one of the biggest changes from the comics) is a pretty darn big spoiler, IMO. I mean, it affects at least six films yet to come, so…

    • @oxhine
      @oxhine Před rokem

      @@Jessica_Roth 1. No one cares about President Ellis and stating that he's in "Agents of SHIELD" demonstrates continuity with the movies which might increase interest in the show which most reactors, including Addie, show no interest in.
      2. I'm a Sam Rockwell fan but most millennials don't know him or like Justin Hammer's character very much. Like "Agents of SHIELD", the One-Shots are also bypassed by most reactors including Addie. Mentioning Hammer again demonstrates continuity with the ancillary material which might increase interest in it and, if there's a slight chance the reactor liked Hammer, the interest is doubled.
      3. You'd have to live in a cave to not know Spider-Man is part of the MCU. The advertising spoiled that as well as the posters and social media. Saying that Tony mentors him is not a big deal. It reveals nothing about the relationship. A spoiler talks about impact and consequences and details. I say nothing about any of those things.
      4. Everything about the Mandarin describes the comic book iteration. Indicating that Feige tried to correct the misrepresentation of the character doesn't reveal what unfolds in the One-Shot or "Shang-Chi" but only generates interest in them.

    It is so refreshing to see reactions to the MCU from people that don’t have the baggage of us who were there from the start or grew up on comic books and/or the lore. You’re just enjoying these movies for what they are and not what you assumed or wanted it would be. Personally, I love all the MCU (including this movie), but this is the bottom of my list. If you enjoyed this as much as you did, I can’t wait for you to get to the Phase 3 movies!
