  • I break down the meaning of nine core whistles used by the Seraphites (Scars) in The Last of Us Part II. The secret whistle language is a testament to Naughty Dog's outstanding sound design team who did an amazing job with this.

00:30 1) The Call, and 2) The Answer
01:09 3) Light Alert (I think I heard or saw something)
01:54 4) The Called Shot Whistle (Old Hunter's Tactic)
03:09 5) Enemy Ambush (Initial Contact with the Enemy)
03:41 6) High Alert (I don't have eyes on the enemy)
04:09 7) Enemy Found (Scars find you on High Alert)

Just came across this. Super informative and observant. Your hard work paid off; it wouldn't surprise me if Naughty Dog worked with actual hunters on this (maybe even some of their own staff hunt recreationally, you never know!). Also, extra kudos to you: I come across a lot of informational clips on YT all of the time. While they are trying to provide information, many presenters pad their videos too much (sometimes to the point the video is much longer than necessary) or even fail to give concise explanations for their info. Some people just RAMBLE. You have avoided those pitfalls! I am a new subscriber now, too...can't wait to watch your other vids and see what you come up with next! Take care.

@@duncanjohnson697 @wolfofthorns - I was able to watch a video or two on this finally! The whistling language is called Sylbo, and it's used in La Gomera, an island in the Spanish Canary Islands on the west coast of Africa. What's crazy is that their language has MANY more meanings that just the brief whistles that the fictitious Seraphites use! Apparently, it's based on the rise in pitch of how they would speak in Spanish...mind blowing! Thanks again for doing this video, Dan...and thanks Duncan on the 411! Cheers.

They sound like birds chirping at each other, which makes one wonder what birds do say with their chirps, especially given their responses to human music, to say little of avian intelligence that certain species express. Some of the whistles are evocative of the call the Seraphites do. Awesome stuff, Moses.

Interesting to hear another take on this, I always interpreted them a little differently!
The "called shot", "high alert" and "enemy found" whistles all sound the same likely because they mean the same thing: "Attack!".
For "Moving up" the whistle seems to come from the scar covering, which leads me to think it may mean "Covering you, move up".
For "Man down" this might actually be "Check in now". From the number of responses scars can work out how many teammates they have left and roughly where they are.
