    During medieval battles, kings would bring their jester along to taunt the enemies. This would cause hot tempered enemies to break ranks and attacks. It makes sense that Stannis would do something similar to bait the Freys to their defeat.

    I heard a theory that some old man will be cooked in Theon's place, and it would be easy to dress some old man as Theon or Theon as some old man. So the sacrifice would not be hard. and the specific old man headed for the barbeque in Theon's place… Arnolf Karstark.

      Lol yeah that silly Karstark

    • @johnnye87
      @johnnye87 Před rokem +10

      Also, the Dreadfort maester would be extremely useful for spreading false information about the battle, such as the reports of Stannis' death. Don't want to waste a resource like that. Karstark meanwhile is of no further use to Stannis: he's no good as a hostage due to his age and his family's infighting ("Uncle Arnolf is captured!" "I call his castle!") and he can't be trusted as a double agent.

    • @johnnye87
      @johnnye87 Před rokem +13

      Another thought: how exactly is the maester a turncloak? They explicitly have no loyalty except to the master of their assigned castle. Whether you consider his master to be Roose or Arnolf, he's doing their bidding, which is the whole extent of his duty. His orders came from Arnolf Karstark, who as a lord sworn to King Stannis broke his oaths by giving those orders and deserves a traitor's death.
      Third argument for Karstark: king's blood. It's a deliberately fuzzy concept that has a lot to do with "power lying where men believe it to lie", but the Karstarks are directly descended from the Starks, who were one of the oldest line of kings around.

That would make Gendry of the blood line that will produce the Prince that was promised. He is also a blacksmith making him someone who actually pulls swords from fire. If all of this is true and that's a big if, you can make the math fit that he is the Prince that was promised. Or something like that. I disagree on Asha being Greyjoy to die here. As is implied in the books and was heavily bashed repeatedly on the show Theon has been castrated by Ramsay. He is unable to produce more children. Asha however may be carrying Qarl the Maid's child. Since Euron, Vic and Aeron are unlikely to live to the end the Greyjoy name would have to continue on through Asha. She'll more than likely become Lord of the Iron Islands with Theon's backing and Qarl's child as heir. It would be a progression in Ironborn politics with a female leader and the heir coming from a thrall family.

    I'm really wondering- we all have this assumption that GRRM will give Stannis a fateful, depressing defeat of some sort in TWOW based on the fact that Stannis had has to endure many fateful, depressing defeats thus far. But since when does GRRM give his characters a predictable ending?? There was a point where we all thought Ned would be heroic. Maybe there will be a point where Stannis DOESNT meet the predicted final end in TWOW that many people think he will?

    I know I'm rather late, but i wonder if the two groups that "rushed together" are possibly the Freys and Karstarks. If i remember correctly, only the Karstark leader was punished for his intent to betray while his army remains ignorant.
    Perhaps Stannis could force the Karstarks onto the ice against the Freys as an alternative to being burned alive or something. The Karstark soldiers, being decently high in number, would be an ample distraction force for the Freys to fight. When the ice breaks Stannis will have dealt with both the traitors and Freys in one fell swoop.

    I understand the reason most want Stannis to win the throne, not just this war, but Stannis has the potential to be a bad king if Melissandre continously influencing him. And his reign will be very challenging, with a new religion at the throne, which may or may not competing with Faith of the Seven, which has more followers, the practice of sacrificing a tribute by burning them alive which people of Westeros are not fond of and the use of magic by Red Priestess which the Maesters dislike, just to name a few

      As in I want Dany's husband to die, and Aegon to be revealed as a Blackfyre, and they marry and rule a pancontinental realm.
      It would be so weirdly poetic if all 5 rebellions were a waste of life before, in the end, Black and Red joined again, not by blood, but, like Dorne, through cocks and c*nts.
      I will even accept Aegon Blackfyre winning and Dany being fed to Patches. I just really want Aegon to be a Blackfyre and win.
      I will settle for Stannis as well.
      I could care less about who rules the North. I just desperately want Faegon to win, I cannot explain why, it just calls to me.

Stannis shows that despite the betrayl he respects his duty to the order and connects him to maester Cressen. I agree that Big Walder's new leadership position doesn't bode well for the Freys' strategic capabilities military; but I don't think it's supposed to. It's highly likely that Big Walder killed Little Walder, and the discovery of LW's corpse is what led to the clash between the Freys and Manderlys, which ultimately led to Roose sending them into the field to face Stannis. I'd actually argue this moment was truly meant as a diversion for Barbrey Dustin to mail the Pink Letter undetected (she's noticeably absent during the clash), but I digress. Big Walder having murdered his cousin set a ton of things in motion for the Northern Conspirators; so I'd argue he's one of them. And that his new position isn't intended to help the Frey cause. Rather, he's likely there to serve as a pigeon carrier and transport a message from Wyman to Stannis. Perhaps he'll allow himself to be captured to deliver it. Or maybe he'll kill another cousin, the unsuspecting Hosteen, which puts command in BW's control, and he'll yield- which could eventually get him in position to drop his message.
    Awesome revelation, and awesome video Quinn.

    • @ashleyofnaath
      @ashleyofnaath Před rokem +10

      Follow up- This wouldn't be BW's first time serving as a pigeon carrier. In ASOS, BW wrote the letter given to King Robb Stark which falsely implicated Theon for burning Winterfell. So maybe we'll see him write/deliver another letter to a different king, only this time it'll be truthful. Further, because of BW's having personally written the letter to Robb, he could exhaunerate Theon- which supports your idea that Stannis will spare him.

    Theons sample chapters are great because you can see how Stannis is living. He has no bed and one chair meaning he still cannot sleep and takes no counsel on what moves to make next. It makes me worry that a lord will take it as a slight, although I suppose he maintains the trappings of power. Also makes me concerned that his health is declining rapidly, every new description we get of Stannis he looks worse and worse. By the time of the tower Asha could see the shape of his skull which does not make him seem healthy especially considering hes only 35. But knowing GRRM it probably means he is going to live for 1000 years.

    Stannis won't believe it at first but if Manderly forces join up with him and whoever is commanding them might be in the know about the plan with Davos and confirm to Stannis that Rickon is in fact alive. The show version of Stannis that we got was not the true Stannis. He wouldn’t burn his own child, he would never bring his queen and their daughter on a dangerous military campaign in the first place, and he most certainly wouldn’t foolishly charge headlong into a pointless battle. I think that Stannis’ story still has a ways to go, and that Winds, if it ever comes out, will be a great follow up.

Trap them between well fortified positions in front of the tower and the mountain clans rushing in from behind as shock troops with what cav he has left and I could see the Freys crumbling in the chaos. Their numbers would become a disadvantage as they lose cohesion and possibly try to flee into the ice and there it’d be like the Russians fleeing Napoleon.

I have had two friends pass away unexpectedly in recent years who had a deep and abiding love for this world and story. Having come to the realization that the story will never be finished makes me sad. The thing that angers me is the fact that George is a liar. He knows perfectly well he's given up on finishing the story. If he did he would have by now, it's just that simple. Once it became clear that he didn't finish during the pandemic my last shred of hope dissolved completely. We will never have closure on any of the theories kicking around the internet. The fact that he didn't can only be explained by the fact that he has no intention to finish which sums up my feelings on the matter. So the best case scenario is a septuagenarian with a famously low fitness level finishing the second to last book in the series and somehow living long enough to finish the whole thing despite prioritizing literally everything else.
