In this instance, what really makes it work is that he clearly enunciates each word. This is a good technique because it gives the felling that he is speaking softly or whispering. When people speak they tend to chop off the endings of words, "I can'T helP fallING in love wiTH you." When speaking softly or whispering, we automatically say the words more distinctly. That effect makes this performance seem so intimate. Many women over the years expressed that it always seemed like Elvis was speaking to them personally when he sang. As the lyrics in Alannah Myles' song "Black Velvet" say, "every word of every song he sang was for you."

Thank you, Beth. This is one of Elvis' classics. I was born in 1949, so the 1950's was the decade of my childhood. I heard Elvis for the first time in 1956, when his music was known as "Rock-A-Billy." Even as a tike in the second grade, I thought his voice was different and special. Sometime during the late '50's, a New York City D.J. named Allen (sp?) Fried called the new style of music "Rock-and-Roll." That name stuck. And the controversy over rock music started. By then, my parents would not allow me to listen to Elvis (at home). I listened to him in other venues, and I saw every one of his movies because of that voice.
Obviously, this song brings back many memories. And Elvis' deep, smooth voice helps make the memories pleasant.

Fun fact about Elvis. His number *2* dream was to be a famous singer. Movie star was his original and _main_ dream. In his first movie, he demanded that they not make him sing. However one of the movies songwriters wrote 'Love Me Tender' and after hearing the song, basically everyone involved begged and pleaded him to sing that song at least. He grudgingly agreed after hearing the song.

The Lord blessed Elvis with a singing voice that was phenomenal despite not having any formal training. He may have been influenced by black gospel and blues singers in the beginning but he lacked that gin soaked growl in his voice which was as clear as a bell right to the very end.
