I have waited 50 years for this voice, Diana is magic and also polyphonic, if you look at that technique it will give you some insight into how she makes that tone, also life experiences and knowing pain is a huge part of how she does what she does, Diana is my hero :) much love from UK
It's something like the Tuva Throat Singers but I've never heard one take their tones into a higher octave. I am also hearing a voice within a voice. Like that full dark "overlay" feature of her voice then deep inside that her 'normal' voice still has something to say. I haven't made it through a run through without crying like a baby. One because her voice and this arrangement is so hauntingly beautiful my brain has no other response. And secondly I am so happy for her and all the hard work this took her to get another octave or more, out of that vocal. I have never heard of a dual tone voice moving out of the lower registers before. If you know different let me know please. Until then I'll listen and cry like a baby because it is so unprecedented. I have not seen any other reactor that was not in awe the same as me.

Hi Jo, I am also from the UK and have been following this girl for the past three years. I first stumbled across a video of her at 14 singing Derniere Danse and I was instantly hooked. I feel like a proud father watching her blossom into the woman she has become. Her voice has matured and grown so much it’s almost unbelievable. I am now 61 and this is the first voice to totally captivate me. Amazing

The gentleman who stood up at 5:10 is Azerbaijani opera singer Yusif Eyvanov, married to Russian uber-soprano Anna Netrebko, so he’s heard good singing. Both he and other members of the jury remarked at the amount of energy Diana was pushing out into the space. Yusif said he’s never felt anything like it in his life. That’s part of why they looked so shell-shocked, they can’t believe what her singing is MAKING THEM FEEL

Here are three reasons why Diana doesn't sound human.

I assure you, Diana is a real treasure chest, she doesn't even know by herself what she can get out of it next time. There is such a story behind that voice, according to what was said on her first tv project.
Diana had very difficult childhood, with her mother being an alcoholic. Diana was the youngest of 8 siblings, and only she survived.
Her biological mother even was accused of attempting homicide towards Diana.
Once Diana was found at street with broken clavicle bone at three years old, she was placed for adoption. Lady who adopted her found a vocal coach to help Diana to start speaking, because she was silent. And that is how Diana's talent was discovered.
The TV show where Diana performed is called "you are Super", and dedicated towards giving platform to abandoned and adopted gifted kids.

Greetings from the UK. I am not a singer, so it’s great to hear and learn from your discussion of singing techniques. Let’s also say, though, that however she does it, Diana’s voice is incredibly beautiful throughout its range - I get shivers every time I listen to her.
At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter, she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5, she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment.
Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. By the age of 10, she was winning local competitions, singing on live TV shows, and her songs started showing up on CZcams.
Two weeks ago, at the age of 18, her first performance during a new Russian television competition with several other renowned performers, has gone viral and has garnered hundreds of CZcams 'reaction' videos, and millions of viewers. Her first song at the competition, an entirely new take on Elvis Presley's 'Can't Help Falling in Love with You' has been called mesmerizing, transcendental, and other-worldly...it highlights her uniquely deep voice, and effortless range from low to high, along with her trademark dramatic and passionate interpretation.
Diana Ankudinova sings mostly in Russian, English, and French. She has also sung in other languages including Spanish, German, and Arabic.
Singing in French, at the age of 10, on a Russian TV show... a viewer: 'at the age of 5 she couldn't speak her own language, how can one see this and still doubt past lives?':
If you listen to Diana's speaking voice and look at it from a Neurolinguistics or Otolaryngology perspective then you will hear that she has a resonating space other people don't. It's called High Arched Palate. Somewhat related to cleft palate in how its formed. Consider a room with a regular height ceiling versus an old cathedral with a high vaulted/domed ceiling. That's her hard palate. It's where the smokey texture comes from (it sounds breathy but the vocal folds are fully engaged). It's also where the the various harmonics come from. Whether it be the subharmonics or overtones (you'll see her shaping her mouth for a different vowel than the one she is producing in order to isolate the harmonic she wants to do the in-voice harmony with). Yes, she does the high voice placement thing Dimash does for the seamlessly easy transitions on this performance, and that was what she was showing off. She became insecure in head voice after her voice first changed. However, on the folk songs she doesn't have to do this because she's an expert at yodel technique. Part of her style is characterized by yodels and very deliberately leaning on her breaks, usually to cry off it at the ends of phrases. Slow deliberate glissandos being another thing she likes to do (and a very Slavic way of singing). She does have a very low break, and it can be heard in her speech when her affect changes. Another thing that characterizes her is the use of dissonance. Her performances of Rechenka are probably the best examples. She intentionally bends her notes into microtones like a guitarist before resolving them to create a lot of dissonance. That kind of dissonance was also present in this performance, through the change of Major to Minor, the melody changes, and how the piano's last key in the beginning set up her first phrase.

Continued vocal training, practice, and actually singing in competitions and live performances for the 3 years between "Wicked Game" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" shows how far she has come in that time. Imagen what Diana will be able to do and sound like once her voice reaches full maturity. Diana Ankudinova's cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love" is a different animal altogether.
The description you keep looking for is that she is a true polyphonic dramatic contralto, the deepest and darkest female voice with tremendous range and control. The judge standing on the top row with the beard and tears in his eyes is Yusif Eyvazov who is married to Anna Netrebko, both starring opera singers. What does it say about her performance if she could move him to tears.

Guys, she has her own CZcams channel with 800K + subs. Go there and listen to her talk about her belated received 100K plaque from CZcams. She sounds like an ordinary teenage girl in that. Teddy bears behind her and everything. She changes somehow when she gets on stage. She grabs you, captivates you, and won't let go and you go along for the ride. She has not only an amazing voice but incredible stage presence. I know she was born with the instrument she has but how has she learned how to use it so masterfully at such a young age!

Imagine that this talent came out only because her adoptive parents took her to singing lessons to help her get her speech back! At 4 years old she was not speaking due to severe emotional trauma, caused by severe mental and physical abuse by her biological mother... Just imagine this gem being smashed and buried in the refuse heap of social and substance use problems! Imagine how many more genius children never get that chance to shine!
The talent show You Are Super! was created to showcase exactly that, to encourage Russian people to adopt children from orphanages, because there's quite a stigma associated with them - that they carry "bad heredity", that you'd be wasting your time and effort on them, that no matter what you do, these kids will never be as good as children born to nice homes.

This was the first of 9 shows. Each contestant(9) gets to sing 1 song of 9 different 'genres/styles'.
In this first show Diana had to do a song from the Grammy Awards, next show someone else will have to do the Grammy.
The tenth person in the middle of the top row is a different guest each show.
The FULL video link below has 11 segments, the first is an intro to the show, the 9 that follow are all of the contestants performing, the second last segment is Diana singing, and the last segment is the voting session.
No contestant can vote for themselves. The scoring points are from 2 to 9 and each point can only be given once in every show. (NO Judges, voting done by contestants) (Guest also has 9 points and can issue as he/she wishes).
The contestants are as follows: 7 from the "Mask" show and 1 from the "Superstar"(Alica Mon) show, also 1 from the "You Are Super"(Diana) show.

Her speaking voice tends to wander due to how low her break is. It can be really low and resonant like a bass with that characteristic buzzing quality, or it can be higher and brighter like you would expect a young female to sound. It's rather fascinating. There's a song she sang last weekend, a Russian folk song, that shows you a few rare glimpses into the roof of her mouth. It looks like she has what is medically called High Arched Palate. Essentially her hard palate is high and arched like a vaulted ceiling. Granting her an extra resonating space. It's also where some of her overtones come from. That breathy quality is an overtone.
Yes, I also noticed this feature of Diana's spoken voice. Her vocal teacher Alexandra Pismennaya recently told TikTok that Diana has a very complex and huge voice, which is very difficult to manage and control all its shades. The end result is all the more surprising. By the way, Alexandra is a great success for Diana, at least so it seemed to me.

She is 18 years old in this video and this is a show where a panel of singers listen to other singers, to offer tips, points, congrats etc.... She won.. judges were caught off guard with this one.
Fun fact: Producer and/or Diana changed this song from major cord (bright/cheerful to a minor cord (like a scary or suspenseful movie music) which give it along with her amazing voice a haunting emotional feeling.. The minor keys sets the tone.
My interpretation of it all, when she sings that wonderful and super emotional cover is that she's a faraway and exiled witch girl (that can manipulate others with her magical and positively cursed female voice) living in the darkest woods far from civilization and have fall in love with a human boy (a boy she stalks almost every time ,when she's at the outskirt of the woods, close by the human city in which he's unaware of that she does..)from the royal palace that she KNOWS she's never can (not only due her condition of being a witch girl, but also when she talks, then it goes unusually manly deep despised by many snub and irrational royalists and other lower rank human citizens ,where the human boy are among with constantly. It however goes very well, when singing with it, though. Her most ultimate capabilities) have in which that hurts her so almost deadly bad and that's why she's mesmerizing emotionally expressing herself with this unique cover of that wonderful song of Elvis P. a voice so dangerous and mesmerizing that it destroys almost all on her path where she is in the woods after ANOTHER unreachable love-sight of the human boy....Yeah..lol....
