Dr. Marrisan, welcome to the extraordinary talent and voice of Diana Ankudinova! For those in your audience that don’t know, Diana Ankudinova was only 18 years old when this performance took place during the 2021 season of a Russian vocal competition called the "ShowMaskGoOn!". Diana’s cover of the Elvis Presley classic "Can't Help Falling In Love", shows Diana Ankudinova has developed into what many vocal professionals believe is a true contralto. Again, for those in your audience that don’t know female voice types, a contralto is the lowest type of female voice, and a true contralto voice type is very powerful and very, very rare.
First, let me answer a very common question asked about Diana's vocal range, because vocal range helps in defining a female singer's voice type. At 13 in 2017, her vocal range was measured from a low of D3 to a high of A5. As of September 2021, 4 years later at age 18, (she is now 19), her lower functional range was measured from a low of C3 to a high of B♭5. But, it's not just how low she can go, it's the exceptional quality of her tone in her lower range. It's all about the roundness, the fullness, and the depth of her voice, along with her ability to create and access an enormous amount of resonance that further defines Diana as a "dramatic contralto", which is the rarest of the rare contralto voice types.
The big question most people ask is, how does she do it? How can such a young female singer achieve such a low, rich, deep, and profound sound? Without actually having her vocal tract scoped, the general conciseness of various vocal professionals simply attributes Diana’s ability to her winning the genetic lottery. She was just born with unique vocal anatomy. Diana’s vocal folds appear to be longer and thicker than most female singers. Her larynx also appears to be larger and her vocal track similarly appears to be longer than most other female singers. It’s this unique vocal anatomy that gives Diana Ankudinova her ability to produce low, deep, rich, and full sounds, but without actually scoping Diana’s vocal track there is no way to be 100% certain.
To really appreciate the vocal progression of Diana,s contralto sound, listen to "Rechenka", a Russian folk song sung in Russian for a vocal competition called "You Are Super!" during their 2018 Season when Diana was only 14 years old. It was during this performance that Diana Ankudinova first came to the attention of vocal professionals because of her lower sound. Next listen to her cover of Chris Izaak's, "Wicked Game" the following year in 2019 when she was only 15 years old during the 2019 Season of "You Are Super!". This 2019 performance of Wicked Game was the first time Diana showed that she was really developing a true contralto sound, but she was not quite there yet. Diana Ankudinova won both the 2018 and 2019 seasons of “You Are Super”.
Diana is also a true polyphonic singer which is an extraordinarily rare accomplishment for someone so young. A singer who has mastered this polyphonic vocal technique can create one, sometimes two, different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones that can make it sound like more than one voice singing. This polyphonic ability is why some people mistakenly believe Diana Ankudinova is using some form of electronic voice manipulation or pitch correction software to alter or adjust her sound. Others believe another person is singing in the background, or she is lip-syncing over a previously recorded vocal track that was altered or modified. There is no artificial manipulation of Diana's voice of any kind going on at all. Neither is anyone else singing off stage or lip-syncing to a vocal track. The “ShowMaskGoOn” is a very competitive vocal competition and Diana Ankudinova is required to use only the equipment provided to her as all other competitors are required to do. There was no opportunity for her or any other competitor to use any equipment to electronically manipulate their voice. What other voices you are hearing is just a backing track used to fill in and round out the performance along with a musical backing track. Diana Ankudinova and only Diana Ankudinova can be heard singing the actual “Can't Help Falling In Love” song.
Female singers usually don't reach their full vocal maturity until somewhere around 24 to 28 years of age although some reach it a little sooner, and others, a little later. Diana Ankudinova’s vocals are already developing well ahead of schedule in reaching vocal maturity. I look forward to what Diana will sound like after a few more years of voice training with her voice teacher, along with additional years in honing her on-stage live performance skills. When that day comes, there can be no doubt that Diana Ankudinova will be a vocal powerhouse to be reckoned with and a wonder to behold on stage.
Diana took part in the “ ShowMaskGoOn on” vocal competition in September of 2021 where she performed her cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. The judges were a panel of nine professional singers that competed against each other and also awarded judging points to each other. When Diana was not competing she is a member of this judging panel. The ShowMustGoOn competition was 9 weeks in length and each judge/contestant had is sing 9 different songs from different genres, one song on each night of the competition. During Diana’s performance, the judge on the top row that stands up first is a famous Russian tenor, Yusif Eyvazov from Azerbaijan who was a special guest judge and is married to the world-famous soprano Anna Netrebko. The blond woman in the center row who also stands and is dressed in red that looks totally shocked at the end of Diana's performance, then puts both hands on top of her head in total bewilderment and disbelief is Julia Parshuta, who is a well known contemporary Russian singer. Julia Parshuta knows at some point, she and all other judges have to compete against Diana Ankudinova, who is a true, generational talent. Finally, Diana also ended this competition by winning it.

Тут дело не только в вокальном диапазоне. Все звуки Дианы богато окрашены обертонами. А иногда призвуки ее уникальных резонаторов настолько сильны, как будто Диана поет одновременно двумя голосами. При этом она идеально попадает в ноты и ритм и одновременно передает лирику и патетику лицом, жестами. Ну, и не забываем похвалить аранжировщиков, дизайнеров световых эффектов.

Я вам с десяток могу привести примеров 14-18 летних певиц с похожим диапазоном, которые поражают не меньше, чем Диана.

Ещё один пример:
Фантастическую версию (cover) Palina - "Позови меня с собой" точно так-же нагло своровало тоже самое ваше любимое НТВ, присвоив её Цою. Хорошая мелодия это 90% успеха в поп-музыке + 10 таланта.
И у Дианы он конечно-же есть - тут вообще без вопросов... На все 100 для её возраста.

It allows her to sing very dramatic/powerful, very (I mean VERY) deep, very dark, very rich. Second, she has a spectacular larynx. She's been called the vocal Eighth Wonder of the World. And the effect when you hear her is totally mind-blowing. It's like she's singing right through you, like a sword straight into your soul. Literally NOBODY else on the planet has a voice like hers. She's not one in a million, she's one in seven billion.

Of course (!) she uses polyphonic technique. You hear this controlled modulated overtone from the beginning in the low chestvoice parts.
She had a clavicle injury in early childhood. There's no way to know if any other injury in the surrounding area occured. She did not speak for a while. I'm curious if that informed a response in her growth and created a different positioning of her larynx and throat tissue. She does have a polyphonic expression in words ending in En, Ing, An, etc spoken and sung.
Greetings from Scotland! Listening to Diana sing this is an enormous feeling of pure unadulterated joy! Impossible to describe this phenomenal young voice! I have always believed that Diana has a very special resonance in her voice. A resonance which hits you right in your very soul! It's a feeling in your chest that defies description! When the song starts, you see her change from a child into a performer and afterwards turn back into a child. It is one of my favorite performances.

Really enjoyed your professional analysis of Diana’s voice, it was also fun to watch the amazement in your face when Diana hit the last two Lines of the song. I have seen probably 50 different vocal coaches teachers react to Diana they are all lucky they are trying to figure out how she does it. Diana goddess sent to us from another planet. There will never be another Voice in your lifetime and even beyond the lifetimes of your grandchildren that will have been a special tone quality. Dee-ana is most often classifies as a very rare polyphonic dramatic contralto with amazing range and control. I'm a little surprised you don't recognize the judge standing on the top row with the beard and tears in his eyes. He is Yusif Eyvazov who is married to Anna Netrebko, both world class opera singers. What does it say about her performance if she could move him to tears? I would suggest you watch her at 15 singing Rechenka.

I've listened to Diana for years now...it's strange that I still can't get enough because I'm not one to get hooked on any particular singer, but like you said, she has a special quality in her voice. At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly.
