This makes me sad and somewhat reflective. As someone who suffered severe systematic abuse from a step mother I can relate to this boy. At the age of 13 my life was threatened and I knew if I didn't get out of that house either I would die or she would. I ran away at 5am in the morning before she woke and I made the journey to my grandparents where I knew I was walking away from one kind of abuse to another.... my step grandfather had sexually abused me from the age of 7. Still, to me, that was more tolerable than the physical, mental and emotional abuse I suffered daily. I was a child and in hindsight I made a terrible choice but I did what I had to in order to survive.... Jacob did the same in my opinion. He was a desperate child who took desperate measures.

I spent 10 years working with children in the care system who, the majority, had been abused. I feel so upset and angry about this case and the treatment of Jacob. The sentence was definitely wrong. He definitely should not have recieved a life sentence, nor should he have been put in an adult high security prison and he definitely should have been able to give evidence on the stand. This case makes me tearful. It's so sad ❤

Having the strength to fight back is incredibly difficult. It is painful, it is hard to gain any part of your life back after escaping these hell holes. It's a difficult thing to face personally, it really does mess you up your life. I am 29 and I am still working through what happened to me and the psychological consequences. When I apologised for various things I never said but... or if you hadn't done this I just said I'm human I screwed up and not coping and I'm so sorry. And they said huh, what are you talking about, oh that, I never even thought about it 🤦‍♀️🥲 sometimes we hate ourselves more than we need to. How can any parent treat their children that way or let anyone else treat their children that way. Imagine living in fear day in and day out. When you said he use to literally throw them into the bathroom I cried 😢 They must of felt pure terror. He shouldn't of been tried as an adult at all. He should of been allowed to speak at his trial. He needed better advice, he needed better support. Every single person basically failed him, apart from his brother. Teachers, Friends, Social workers and so called Family, should be ashamed that not one of them stepped in to stop this. You delivered this case spot on Emma and I was gripped from the start. Oh my 😢 I feel so sorry for him. As a mother I teach my kids the importance of privacy and teaching them That no one, NO ONE is allowed to look at them or touch them against their will. Not me, not their school nurse or doctor. I am always taking time of from work for their school nurse/doctors appointments so That I can make sure they have protection and able to give full consent to the examinations they are supposed to have. Poor boy 💔

I’m English. I’ve often thought that sentences aren’t long enough for many crimes, particularly sexual ones, in this country. I lived & worked in Texas, USA for many years. I was horrified by the severity of punishments AND the violence & rape which is so very common! I guess that somewhere in the middle would be better…

Hi Emma. No way on earth should he have been tried as an adult. He wasn’t a brutal killer. I fully understand why he did what he did. He needed to sent to a secure unit for young people to have a period of treatment and rehabilitation to make him understand the gravity of his actions, the experts would’ve been able to say whether or not it was safe to release him. I am personally glad that he has his freedom back, and wish him well in the new life he hopefully will get.

I don’t blame Jacob at all for this crime, I desperately wanted to kill my abuser (just so as not to panic anyone, he’s dead now and it was cancer not me!) and it was in no way this extreme. How can you blame a child for wanting this awful pain and trauma to end! Heartbreaking!

I feel like the White Supremacy aspect of his life is a lack of identity, going to prison at 15 he's barely developed his own identity, I hope he snaps out of that because he seems like he has a lot to offer and has real potential to give back to society and settle down with a nice girl.
I feel so bad for Gabriel, he was clearly mentally vulnerable and was kind of fed to the wolves by Jacob, I feel like his death is on Jacobs hands.

In some American prisons joining a gang is pretty much a matter of life or death. The USA is highly divided by race so the White Power gangs were probably his only option for protection.
Vulnerable prisoners are not protected in American prisons as they are in other developed nations prisons. (I know that very few countries prisons are beyond reproach but the USA seems to tolerate shocking levels of physical & brutal sexual attacks on their convicts!)

The way I see him, he didn’t necessarily want his parents killed, he wanted the horror to stop and that is the only way he knew how to make the pain go away. This case goes much deeper than just an angry kid wanting vengeance against parents who restrict their children. There was trauma, hurt and fear in every aspect of his life. My heart just ached hearing this case. I just wanted to hug him. When you said about him hurting that boy with the locker door I’m sure it was because he saw that as retaliation and anger to his situation rather than hurting the boy specifically. He is the victim in this case and I feel that his parents (albeit one was a step parent, and I use that word lightly because they didn’t deserve the right to have that privileged title) are now where they deserve to be so that they can’t hurt anyone else. I wish him well as he puts his life back together.

Thank you, Emma, for your passion & understanding for the children of abuse. You are a wonderful advocate for these vurnerable, violated children.
Jacob was failed on so many levels throughout his life &, despite taking tbe ultimate action of killing his abusive parents, I feel such sympathy for him. It is almost impossible to comprehend his humiliation, pain & anguish. Suffice it to say that it had to have been horrendous enough that he felt his only recourse was to murder his tormentors, albeit that action being very extreme. I am so pleased that he has been freed but I worry that he now has to negotiate this world without help, as he acclimatises to that world which he does not recognise or understand. I am also concerned about his religious affiliations, but, hopefully, he will embrace a more open-minded view of his fellow man as he makes his new journey.
Poor man. He has so much to learn about life on the outside & much self adjustmment ahead. I wish him the very best in whatever future endeavours he undertakes.
Emma, you truly are a force of nature - your experience, dignity, empathy for the trials & tribulations of the unfortunates of our world & your ability to educate us on the difficulties & subtleties of the human condtition is unparrelled.

This is why context around these types of cases needs and must be in the forefront of the public’s mind. It’s so important for regular people to know what the signs of abuse are and ensuring boundaries are well and truly established when going into a new relationship when one has children, from everything I’ve read around this predators are manipulative and there are lots of different signs you can look out for.
