    I'm a newbie planner :)
A few things I have learned:
    * I have tried several other times to use a planner and tbh my downfall was other planners and what I mean by that is that my planner was not as "pretty" as others, I didn't have all the cute accessories, etc. etc. I have come to realize that NO ONE else will be looking at my planner and I will just do what works for me and not hold my planner up to others expectations of what a great planner looks like. :)
*You can use a planner WITHOUT all the extras. All you really need is a planner and a pen.
*You don't have to go spend 60+ bucks on a planner. You can plan with a notebook & pen or there are many affordable options.
*Just get started with each passing month you will find what works for you.

Heather, you covered so many of the same things that would be on my list too! One other thing I wish I had known was to “preplan” with sticky notes instead of going through the whole year and writing everything down on the pages!

Good video. Thank you. I'd like to add with your pen tip, that paper makes a difference. Pens don't feel and perform the same on all papers. You may love a pen with one paper, but hate it with another. Keep trying different supplies and planner until you find what works best for you. Let your planners change as your life changes. Planning and planners are supposed to make your life easier and better. If they're not, change it. Happy 2020 to all planner friends! Have fun planning your best year yet!

It also depends (at least for me) what you are using the pen for - I'm not usually a fan of ball point pens (or at least i never used to be, might be changing now) but they are what I love for Pathfinder RPG nights because they right faster for me when i need to keep up with the notes

    Wish I had known...
That an easy weekly layout of washi top and bottom gets me off and running
And that Michaels bargin bin has multiple fun washis 3-5 for one buck
That a little casual scrap from pretty catalogs ,magazines , soap wrappers ,etc can be more fun than a carefully designed sticker
That fooling around on a weekly layout .... I can sketch with colored pencils and a phone photo for inspiration - though I did not think I could draw before
That yes it is ok to use Erin Condren plus disc planners for varied purposes - that a planner is more than that - it is an integrated time sensitive way to archive work , memories , and more

I love putting the planner supplies in the budget. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of that. We have a budget but never thought to add it. I know my husband and I give each other $25 of spending money when we get paid. I should start taking some out of that and put it aside for planning supplies. I also got way too much washi tape at first. I just use it mostly to put down the middle to cover up a pattern that doesn’t go with my color scheme. I love planning! I’ve been doing this for 2-3 years now I think. It helps me get so organized and remember what needs to be done weekly and monthly. I love how I can use the planner supplies to organize many different areas of my life. I love when you show how you do things with the budget for instance, so helpful!

Thank you Heather! I started using my Happy Planner/Tul planner/Arc planner when my phone dumped my calendar. I knew then that I had to start writing down my schedule of events. I have 5 kids and to lose all of their school schedules was heart wrenching. So, I now keep a paper planner and I love the disc bound planners because if I dont get something done on my To Do list, I just take it out and move it to the next day. That's why I haven't gone back to a spiral bound planner. But like you said, it is a personal decision on which planner you use.

    1) Dollar Tree and the 1/3/5 section at the Target entry have planner stickers, journals, binders, mini post-its and other accessories! The packs are smaller and usually more seasonal. If you're new and trying to see what works for you and how you use the accessories it's a good way to test different things without blowing your whole budget on one item. When you figure out how you're using the planner, you can make smarter purchases.
    2) I'm not sure if anyone said this yet, but you CAN return/exchange items you don't use in the original packaging. Check the return policy at your local store. Most stores accept returns with receipt up to 30, 60 or even 180 days! If there's no receipt or it's beyond their return period you can still usually get a store credit at the lowest sale price. (Better than taking up space in your house and making you feel guilty for buying it.) If I buy something that looks fun, but it sits for over a month without me having to go in the book for a sticker, I put it in the return bag. Or I put it in the "gift" pile - I like to keep thoughtful gifts ready for whenever!
    3) Some of the stores near me are having test groups. They have a session where you can try different pens / papers and meet with other planner people. You can also try out accessories like punches to find the ones that work best for you. If there isn't one scheduled near you, ask if they have a test area...sometimes they can repurpose the good pieces from 'damaged packs' or returned items to encourage more sales and less returns.
    4) Learn how to make your own dividers and folders with different hacks and office supplies. It's not always easy to find what you need in the size you need it, but if you are willing to make one yourself you can get exactly what you want. It will get easier after the first one, but you have to keep trying!!! You can make a super customized planner that makes you so happy you can't wait to open it to the next section :-)

Great video. Wish I had known you don't need all the planners and all the stickers. Lol! I will be on a planner budget in 2020.
I'm honored to be a part of the planner community. You all are the only one's the get my joy over stickers, planners, and planning.
Thank you for all the time you put into your videos. Iv'e shared this before, but you are the first HP that I discovered on CZcams and the reason I decided to be a Happy Planner. Also the reason I have an addiction to planners and stickers.😀❤😊

Thank you very much for your honest and true voice of reason. I will say that you're right about most of what you said, and it was nice to hear it too. I just started planned about Mid-December after not having a planner since, possibly, High School. Keeping it simple is better for me.
    GREAT video! Good information.

All ten of you'r tips are so true. My tip is to do what best fits your way of planning and don't get sucked into everyone else's way of planning. Create your own style.

I sincerely enjoy your channel! I really love “Frixion” pens that have eraselable ink! They are a joy to write with, too! I special order the .5’s and they make me happy because I do not have to worry about making a mistake. Just erase! Xx

    • @briannab5296
      @briannab5296 Před 4 lety +1

Paget .. did you know the Frixion pens with caps have larger barrels to hold more ink than the clickable ones do? .. i DO LOVE Frixion. But ya have to be careful with them. I have a deskpad where i put various lists under the clear flap. I set a warm plate on it (because i like eating at my desk) and was upset to find the Frixin ink had disappeared from a list under it. Even after putting the list in the freezer overnite, the ink reappeared very faintly & spotty.

      @peggypatrick2730 Před 3 lety

I loved them too, but have stopped using because the ink will dissapear if the page gets moist or wet. My grandson spilled water and some of it wicked into my planner and erased all of our wonderful vacation memories - lesson learned :D

I wish I knew more about how long these pens really last. I go through one every 3 weeks. I also wish I knew how to wait to get the new sticker books. I would drive to the store and they would always be out of them. I learned to wait and then get them. I also learned that there are other companies that make great stickers besides happy planner- and they work beautifully! Thanks for another great video!😊

Hi! The algorithm brought you to me. I love how genuine and down-to-earth you are. Your sincerity and support just shine through your vids. I just started planning this year in a Pipsticks/Workman planner. I didn't know there was this huge planning community, and to be honest I like doing my own thing with Crayola markers and stickers left over from when I taught piano *lone wolf planning*.
So I love how you emphasize that this is about YOU and YOUR PLANS and not about looking good on social media. And thanks for the reassurance that I don't have to buy all the washi tape (I got one to start, but it's kind of thick for how I want to use it)...The one sticker I wish I had was that long narrow one (like your budget one) to cover up some stuff I don't use on my monthly view...put that space to WORK!!
tl;dr Thanks for being you. :)

Hey Heather. I love your content and am so inspired by your planning style. I totally get that it can get expensive. Especially since I’m from Scotland (UK) and we don’t have a michaels etc. So factor in shipping and it’s crazy! I’m new to the community, started my own planner of random lists, journalling etc. in August and I now have a Happy Planner for 2020. I’m soooo excited. I love it! Can’t wait to get into the community 💜

I'm a newbie Planner. 2020 is my first, and if I could describe it in one word, it would be "magical."
I can't really explain it. I'm only on my first week and already I feel like it's reached inside my soul, pulled out all the insides and rested it's light on all the possibilities I've carried inside me and now I get to watch "me" grow.
Thank you for your insights into the world of Planning. I only hope I can do this form of art some justice 😍😍😍

Great video Heather! Love your enthusiasm. I went into Joanns to get a planner (60%off!) and an employee totally poo-pooed me when I asked where the "other" planner section was. She thought the HP craze was crazy and ridiculous. But I realized that she doesn't know me at all! I could NEVER plan on a phone (which she advised me to do, for crying out loud.) I am a paper/pen girl and I also wear MANY hats around here. I am responsible for homeschooling my boys, in charge of my dad's meds, my mom's appts, my husband's appts, MY appts, bills, church events, pet appts, and when we need to clean the fridge!!! And that's just the tip of it...HPlanning has transformed my life, made me productive, AND has supplied a creative outlet for me that I really needed. I get a lot of joy out of improving my handwriting, checking things off and....yup.....washi tape. The lady at J's has no idea....so there. And too bad about the negativity....terrible...ignore it.

Love this video! Only a couple comments to add that might be helpful for newbies. I learned to be smart about watching for sales and/or coupons to purchase products. Michaels and Joann both run sales on Happy Planner items frequently. I also learned that new products will be released by Happy Planner at least twice a year (if not more often). So if what you are looking for isn't available right now just give it a few months and something new will be coming. The negative to this is that it can make it really hard to resist buying the new stuff every few months 😊

I was using spirals and my phone and neither work for me because I need to be able to see my entire week - ALL week, all day - so that I can remember important items/dates. I have to admit I wanted to buy so much more but realized quickly that I wouldn't use all of those stickers and accessories, just because they don't fit into my lifestyle. This video was SUPER HELPFUL! THANK YOU!!

Terrific video with great advice!! You hit all the key points here. You aren't kidding that its expensive especially once you did your first color coordinated week. Then its pretty much over. You are into the kits! Oh and of course you need Happy Planner sticker books to help fill in where the kits don't. Love those Happy Planner sticker books!!! I use them in my Erin Condren because stickers work in every single planner brand!

This is great! I REALLY love that you mentioned that you purchase items that you yourself don't actually use, but buy them solely to demonstrate/flip-through them on your channel. I like that you made it very clear that this is your business and source of income. So often, many of us, myself included, see planning videos created by people who have "all of the things", with the lovely beautifully decorated planner space, and feel serious planner envy. :-) We forget, or don't realize that they weren't purchased for personal use, but as a business expense. For some folks dealing with planner stuff all day is WORK. It may be a fun job, but it's still work in the end.

This is the first video I've ever watched on planning! I've been checking it out some on Pinterest and just last week I got my very own very first happy planner (was interested in the bullet journal but came across the happy planner first & just went with it) but I also got some stickers to go along with it! Im so excited to start planning I love everything about it the whole idea of this new style planning is intriguing to me...I'm also terrible about accomplishing the important things in life so I'm hoping this will help all that. But look, I'm so excited I haven't wrote the first thing in it yet! Lol its like im just stuck starring at it not wanting to make it ugly or something lol
