- In this video, I make a chess board made from Bolivian rosewood (Morado) and bird's eye maple. This board is finished with a table top/bar top epoxy that will protect it from high humidity and keep it from being physically damaged when playing outdoors. This board is going to Thailand where they like to play outdoors.
The squares are 2.5" x 2.5" x 1.25" (63.5mm x 63.5mm x 31.75mm) and the walnut frame is 3" wide (76mm). There is a 1/8" (3mm) brass border around the playing field. The frame has the family name and the U.S. Air Force logo inlaid into the frame on each player side.
I've had great success using Starbond's CA glues and that's what I used to adhere the brass border to the frame. Get the Freshest CA glues in the market at Starbond by clicking here: www.starbond.com/?rfsn=249403...

I think the real question here would you buy it and the answer is most definitely Yes. I've had the pleasure of seeing and playing on one of your boards and it is amazing.
Did you win and what is your ELO?
Your the Bob Ross of woodwork. Chessboard came out fantastic.
I swear before I saw this comment I was going to say the same thing. I just love watching these videos. It amazing and soothing at the same time.
Another winner Mike! I am so proud of my board. Everyone who sees it just marvelsat
it’s beauty
Thank you so much, Ray!
Just an FYI, you can warm the epoxy in a water bath and that wiil A help the bubbles to come out and B make it easier to spread. That's what I do.
This chess board is stunning. Beautifully done!
This has quickly become my favorite woodworking channel. The chess board videos especially are so pleasing, relaxing, and unique. Thank you for sharing, it looks amazing 👌
So, every video? Ha!
@@4SonsWoodwork haha the first video of his I ever saw was actually a box build. I am not a chess player so I never would have guessed I'd enjoy these so much!
Like how quickly?
Awesome build! Beautiful job sir.

That’s really beautiful, I love the finish. I doubt it will ever be hot enough in the UK to apply though 😢
wow i love it and i wish i could get a board from you one day :)
Love it!
The brass inlay are really pretty! Didn't know they were safe to run throught a table saw either...
A true craftsman
Wow, absolutely beautiful, I would make it.. if I could lol not a chance I can do something like that, I can always dream.
Fantastic.😍😍😍
Nice Bolivian music
Is there a shop where I can buy such a board? priceless...amazing work
it was a great video and loved the final outcome of the chess board, i am wondering how much it costs????
About ten years ago, after having back surgery, I was extremely bored and tired of being off work while recuperating so I decided to make a large end table to fit with our sectional couches. I told my wife I was going to use epoxy to finish it after staining and she looked at me like I was a weirdo. LOL Needless to say the table turned out amazing and is still in our living room today. I never thought about using it for a chess board. Once again, you are giving me great ideas! Thanks again!
On another note... Have you ever thought about building a board with DGT built in? If I had the money I would definitely want you to build one for me. All the top Grand Master Tournaments use this technology so they can track the moves in real time. Pretty awesome if you ask me! As always I am enjoying your videos and can't wait for the next one!
I think this IS your greatest Masterpiece ; But inside I always ask what do the pieces look like! I would like to order one of these!
I'm a huge fan of epoxy work and have made several several woodepoxy projects but I gotta say, I honestly thought this one looked better without that top. I understand why because of where it's going and how it's going too be used, I'm just saying that finish before the epoxy was absolutely beautiful.
Agreed. I think I'd have flatted the final resin to 1200 or so and waxed it...... or maybe a semi-gloss lacquer.
Großartig! 🇩🇪
How long does it take to make each board? These are lovely!
Beautiful details, but after all that effort you left it like that in the end? no sanding to a flat finish and polish?
Hey Mike - I'm super inspired by your boards so keep them coming. I do my woodworking at a maker space in Lowell, MA - Lowell Makes. We have every tool imaginable so I have no excuse except time and proper planning. See for your assembly you made a mini torsion box.. like a small Ron Paulk table? Can you share the rough dimensions of that an possibly any details we can't see?
I think there may be a story behind the story!!! Sometimes making the jigs can be the most enlightening part!! --- Much appreciated!
I made three of those torsion box clamping fixtures and they have really improved my workflow. They're 20" x 20
x 6" high with 3/4" plywood on the top and bottom. Here's a video that quickly shows at a high level how I made them. You can probably figure out all the other details. czcams.com/video/fVO3zQfVhzE/video.html
yum
What a wonderful board. Do you play chess online as well as in person?
Your videos end way too soon. Love your work and peaceful relaxed vibe.
I have a dream to own this kind of chessboard.
You should always read the instructions before using chemicals - paint, epoxy, cleaners whatever. You can get around a cold workshop by pre-heating board and resin before mixing and applying resin, and leaving in a warm corner eg with a small radiant heater pointing at it for an hour or 2 until it sets / cures (or starts to). I'm not sure if you are mixing the resin on top of the chess board for video placement effect, but it's not good practice - you don't want any spills upsetting the ratios and it's a pain to clean properly.
For all that it's a beautiful end product and would be a pleasure to play on.
Beautiful work! 😍
No, I would not make it. I have neither the skill nor the tools.
Besides, I'd rather watch you make these works of art. 😊
I have tried to do the CNC inlay technique you used before but I could not get it to look good. How did you get the tolerances so perfect? Very nice work!
I did a lot of testing when preparing to make some Chinese chess pieces with engraved Vietnamese characters and that led me to use a 15 degree v-bit. I also used that on the Air Force logo in this board. You might try changing bits to see if that helps with the tolerances. This is the bit I used: amzn.to/3iaD8fx This CNC did not cut very well when I first got it due to a ball screw that was defective. Laguna covered it under warranty and that made a HUGE difference, so that's something else to explore.
Amazing work overall. However, I am wondering if the epoxy coat came out to be a tad uneven. At 19:38 ish the surface seems a bit wobbly. I am going to do a similar table top epoxy finish soon for one of my projects and was wondering if there are some pointers you can provide for getting that smooth glass type finish.
You might want to check out this video where I made another board with an epoxy coating. For this one, I sanded after applying the epoxy. It's time consuming, but it provides a very smooth finish. You can keep increasing the grit until you get to a sheen that you like. czcams.com/video/w-cQBHx8LqU/video.html
Very impressive. Unfortunately I would not make it only because of what it cost vs what price it would fetch.
That is an absolutely beautiful board and a beautiful gift. I would not make it however because the glare from the Apoxsee would be too distracting for me personally. I certainly understand that the client needs were particular in this regard, but I would have to pass on that finish. A satin or a matte, Or maybe even just a cutting board or a charcuterie board oil at the most. The workmanship is stunning however
I did it with Woodbex.
Treated to another fantastic video so soon! Thank you!
This might be a really silly question, but why do you make two 'thin' sides and put plywood in the middle, instead of using thick pieces and no plywood?
Genuine curiosity and lack of knowledge here, no criticism whatsoever!
The main reason is to control wood movement. The plywood is more stable, so by gluing relatively thin pieces to the plywood, it helps to reduce the movement of the wood which could cause the squares to separate or crack. A secondary reason is because it's harder to find these exotic woods that are thick enough to get the thickness that I wanted, so the plywood helps to make the wood appear to be thick. It's a lot of extra work, though, so it's really done to minimize wood movement.
@@Woodumakeit makes perfect sense, thank you!
Nice video. Did you epoxy the underside?
Yes, I didn't show it in the video, but I coated both sides each time, so it took more than a week to complete the epoxy finish.
beautiful, what are the dimensions? Good for you
I want to bay this
It is really nice how much
beautiful board. only thing i would say about it is you didnt finish the last epoxy coat. I noticed how wavy it was at the end. You should sand the last layer with 400 to flatten it, then wet sand with 1000, 2000, 3000 then buff and polish it ,to get a perfectly flat and shiny finish with no wavyness. otherwise this board is simply amazing.
I love the board. I’m not sold on the epoxy finish though…
Usted puede hacer un tablero o juego de damas 20 × 20
Do you ship them to Brazil?
wauw can i buy one ?
My issue with epoxy is it is so difficult to achieve a glass smooth surface.. The construction technique is admirable.
Does anyone know how to strengthen chess pieces from breaking at its head or arms. Pieces are made out of crushed stone and resin. Will some sort of epoxy or urethane type coating strengthen them from breaking. I would appreciate all comments.
It looks really nice but I would personally opt out of the epoxy finish
W.O.W.
Where do you keep buying your wood? Especially the species you use in many of your projects. Seems hard to come by.
I live in Virginia and there are five different places that I get my wood from: Northland Forest Products, C.P. Johnson Lumber, Vienna Hardwoods, Colonial Hardwoods, and for the more exotic woods I go to Exotic Lumber in Annapolis.
Sheeeesh!
Sorry I am poor in making it. But I want to buy the chess board as you showed in this video with bit more customised. Pls let me know where to place the order
Is that the Order of the Engineer ring?
Do you have a website for purchase? How much for this type of board? I’m turn 50 soon and I would love to have this type of board to play Against my sons.
Did you finish the underside with the epoxy? I'm making a chessboard that I want to completely encase in epoxy for various reasons but I don't know how I'm going to do the underside without a lot of sanding and polishing after the final coat.
I didn't show it in the video, but I covered all sides with epoxy. It was farily simple to pour it onto the top and bottom. I just had to be careful about drips around the edges to minimize the need for sanding and polishing, but it turned out to be not that hard.
How do you not run into issues by gluing solid wood to plywood and also by surrounding solid wood with a mitered frame? Obviously, if you were using a very thin veneer, this wouldn’t be a problem, but it looks like yours was at least 1/4”. Am I missing something?
Hello my Friend, is it possible to order it?
Hablan español? Y donde lo puedo llamar, me interesa comprar uno personalizado
How do I purchase a board?
where i buy this??)
Must be nice to have a $14,000 computer controlled router.
Would have been more impressed if you have done the carving by hand, though.
