I would have to flip Simone and Floor. They definitely deserve to be the top two. I think what would give Floor the edge in my opinion is her range. You pick any genre, she could sing like she belongs there. If you didn’t know she was a rock singer and you heard her singing another type of music, she could fool anyone into believing she belongs in that genre. The best example is her performances on the tv show Beste Zangers. If your first introduction to her was on that show, you would laugh if someone told you she was a lead singer in a metal band.
My TOP 3 in order : 1- Floor Jansen 2- Simone Simons 3- Brittney Slayes // And I also think Sharon den Adel should be lower than 4... she sings most of the time always in the same range of her voice. (I have 4 Within Temptation albums... but among all the female fronted band I listen to... Within Temptation is among the one I like the less (Still like it a lot :P). Still... very nice selection.

And no... no one would laugh because IF they watched the show it was mentioned DAY 1 she was a Metal Singer of international renown but nearly unknown in Netherland. And her Vilja lied was quite "metal-like" :)
The most versatile singer in any style of rock today is Floor! Her stage presence is second to none and her technique is near perfect. Her range is world class... not sure what else can we judge her on? I honestly believe she is one of the best all around singers on the planet!

I like this list and totally agree about the top 3, though I couldn't decide about the order… guess in such spheres it's only a matter of taste. I missed Anneke van Giersbergen and Sabine Edelsbacher (still underrated if you ask me), but there will always be some missing in a Top 20 list.
Thank you very much for posting this! "Symphonic Metal" is a genre that seems to encompass too much. I prefer the female-fronted bands that can hold a balance of symphony and metal; ever so easily done. I hunt for the sound I want and have to dig through bands that should be in a separate category, but maybe this mixed variety is what makes the genre what it is. But to my point. Your post featured some musicians I didn't know before and you've given me a little taste of the bands they're in--that being your countdown from 20 to 10 or so. Rating your picks for the top 10 is tough because those women are powerhouses. I agree that Floor should be #1 because she can hit stellar heights with her voice, but not with Nightwish. Simone is great but I don't think she has the power Floor has; Simone is often overpowered by the music and the grunting/rough vocals/whatever-you-call it. I'm very pleased you put Serenia in here because those women were great and that band (more than any other) knows how to balance the female lead with the male grunt/gruff/whatever, I should say they knew how to do it because that's another band that's gone astray. Because of your post, I have some bands to hunt down; thanks!

Being a soprano myself i think people are obsesed with high notes, mezosopranos and contraltos are amazing and so powerfull !! come on people! Cristina Scabbia is wonderfull
How come the male singers all sound like they drank took much whiskey and smoked too many cigarettes, and the women all sound like Angels? I can never figure it out. :)
I do believe the women take care of their vocals more but they are a few male singers I like ,tony kakko,tommy of kamelot is okay,but micheal kieke is the best.ive heard him say he much rather sing songs like guardian angel than metal but it dosent sale.

There are a lot of beautiful male clean voices in metal. Try Myrath or Vanir, they have amazing vocalists.
