Interviewer did a good job pressing magnus into saying something by focusing on cheating as a whole and not on Hans which magnus clearly had the intention of not speaking.
To be honest, I don't believe that Magnus ended up saying anything more or less than he intended to beforehand
Yeah I always thought Kaja is a fine host/interviewer
Naw, I think Magnus said exactly what he intended to say. He was speaking in a rather bored voice like he was repeating bullet points he had rehearsed with his team many times. And he namedropped Dlugy at the very beginning, not after Kaja pushed him.

It’s called the Carlsen gambit. You resign early in a majorly anticipated early game and throw all the other players off their mental prep and create a media controversy. While everyone’s up in arms, you calmly proceed to win the tournament.
That was absolutely brilliant! 🤣
Statistically speaking you gonna lose at least one game, so do it against a strong player. They’ll feel they didn’t really beat you and they’ll be consumed with self doubt. it’ll totally mess with them and make them lose other matches.
Thank you Hikaru, for not talking over Magnus when he talks and for pausing the video before inserting your comments. The proper way to do it.
In the review of Prof Regan's analysis, he starts disputing the analysis before the professor has even opened his mouth. His chat are trying to teach him manners, or at least upset that his poor manners are reducing their enjoyment of hearing the evidence.
@@onlytruth5863 prof Regan likely built his program on Win98… two decades ago. Be honest… they’re likely weak against modern methods and AI chess. It’s knee jerk obvious Hikaru was pointing out the burden of proof was clearly not met. Hikaru’s interests if any GMs were involved (and who) are justified. I’d like more info as well because it came off like a prof pet project. The interviewer had no idea how to press him to speak with intellectual vigor and we didn’t see any modern demonstration… it was justified.
Magnus is not afraid of the Dlugy man
i used to watch dlugy play blitz and bullet on icc back in the day
Dlugy man (lvl 98) Swamp creature
I beat Dlugy decades ago at a Manhattan Chess Club blitz tournament. Though he was a rising junior and of master rating at the time, nevertheless he blew a standard Philidor rook and pawn ending. His coach, Bill Lombardy, was watching the game and got very angry with Dlugy afterwards, and showed him the correct way to draw. I'm going to assume that's a lesson he hasn't forgotten.

Dlugy was also part of the end of Borislav Ivanov's career, after accusing Borislav of cheating. Dlugy later gave an interview with Chess Base that included him saying Ivanov was caught because he couldn't act like a strong chess player would, while playing chess of that level. Dlugy additionally said that if a 2600 rated player had the same type of machine they would only have to cheat about 4 times in a game, and nobody would think anything of it.
Dlugy doesn't understand mathematical analysis then.
Dlugy knows his stuff (evidently)
interesting, though Borislav Ivanov had a device that can be easily detected by a metal detector. If Hans Niemann is cheating, it escaped both a metal detector and a thermal/RF probe that checks for devices in the ear canal. How is Neiman cheating? I'm sure the CIA would like to know, so they can outfit their agents with the same device.

Whoever makes Hikaru's thumbnails is doing a very good job!
Hikaru, could you look into three games played between Warmerdam and Niemann? Warmerdam stated in an interview that Niemann’s play between their first two games (Grappa January 2021 and Guimarães 2021) increased dramatically in a game they played in Prague 2022. It would be awesome if you could analyse these three games and figure if the quality of play is out of the ordinary!
As well as the statistical analysis of the likelihood of him finding the moves. There is an analysis by a professor, you can look there. If you want the analysis of a streamer, it's likely to be what ever generates more views. Hikaru is a streamer first, he has stated this categorically.
I think magnus is just as calculating with his words as he is in chess. I think that's why this is so interesting. He's playing an irl chess game and trying to obfuscate his moves from Hans. If he doesn't come out and directly say how he thinks Hans is cheating, he can buy more time to gather evidence of it and possibly catch him red-handed. I will say knowing that his coach also cheated online is kind of damning imo. One person who cheated online is one thing, two people who cheated online is a whole other thing. Also for the hand fans out there just because he hasn't been caught recently, doesn't mean he isn't still cheating. It's incredibly hard to detect when it could only be one or two times a game.
Magnus has said is is choosing his words careful so that he doesn't do anything illegal,. That what he is doing is unethical and unsportsmanlike is beyond question. There is difference between trying to not offend anyone, and trying to be as offensive as possible without breaking the law. It's the same as the difference between acting with integrity, and being purposely devious. That Hans has cheated in the Sinquefield Cup is out of the question as it stands, so Magnus is exercising masked libel in its purest form.
@@onlytruth5863 I don't see how refusing to play someone alone is unethical or unsportsmanlike. Especially when it's considered a loss when you resign. Any inference drawn from an early resignation is not Magnus' fault. If he hadn't had to play Hans in the generations cup, and resigned again, we would still be wondering if he even thought Hans was cheating.
Most people are defending Hans purely because he's been witch hunted by the mob without any evidence, and would change their mind if someone actually provided any. The concept of innocent until proven guilty exists for a reason. Mob mentality and witch hunts can be a real threat to a person's life.
@@onlytruth5863 He could have handled this behind the scenes, and none of us would have known of any suspicion. Silence is better than insinuations.
@02:30 She threw that "losing 3 points to hans" comment at him like a rock.

@@godzillian3540 yeah not really. Magnus is way too smart for that trick.
I love Magnus's answer to "Is cheating a big problem in chess". He immediately empathized with other's who have experienced it more than he has. He is a true ambassador of the game and maybe the best we have ever had. I know he wants to help the chess world overcome this problem and the way he has handled the situation has certainly helped move the solution in the right direction I believe.
Magnus has taken a dump on the chessboard
This is movie worthy
He is a poor sport
I wish Magnus would have said he resigned after 1.5 moves because Hans played d4, c4 with engine precision.
I smell a lot of confidence from Magnus. Does not even seem worried. Looking forward to see him back it up.
we all see different facets of the same object. Some people may equally see a devious disposition with commitment to try and get away with it.
@@onlytruth5863 get away with what?
He was clearly on to something if Hans got rattled and instantly admitted to cheating multiple times... On a live interview... Don't you think?
Or maybe just a lucky guess..... /S
@@PurpleDragonSpike in fairness, magnus could just act confident with no evidence and remain that way. People would always infer suspicion about Hans, and magnus would not need to do anything
Kaja is like "akinator" app.
Maybe Magnus didn't think Hans cheated, maybe he disrespects him as a cheater in general.
Magnus said once he hates playing against computers. Now imagine the feeling of playing against a guy who may be using an engine. And more than that, a guy who insults him after beating him . I'm sure Magnus despises Hans. He must have zero motivation to play against such a fake and disrespectful person.
This is a good point. Something definitely happened during the SC that made him actually withdraw though.
If you watch Magnus's videos, you will often see him make comments about moves feeling unnatural or like an engine.
This is a guy who spends a wild and crazy amount of time playing with people, books and engines. He's likely got a strong gut feeling for it, but he knows he can't prove it.
Still, he's kind of the world's foremost expert on chess, so his intuition, while it may not be proof, is certainly not nothing. Even if it might be wrong.
Then why did he play him in games before and suddenly decide not to? Doesn’t make sense
@@eschelar I watched almost all Magnus videos and I can't remember him making that kind of comments.

It would be relatively easy to prevent cheating OTB from people sending outside information. Play matches in a secure room that prevents external telecommunications.
That would not prevent any cheating where the chess engine is physically on the person but it's a start.
Exactly. People forget that 3D printing has come a long way to a point that someone can 3D print pewpew that doesnt trip metal detectors. It's even more easier to build an ear wig that is hard to see especially with people who have long hair.

Thanks, Hikaru. I was thinking that mentioning Dlugy--a reputable coach--was some sort of compliment until you revealed that Dlugy, himself, had once been thought to be a cheater. This means that Magnus is still accusing Hans of somehow cheating--though it is definitely unproven!

I have never seen such a blatant presence of an executive producer as during the last 5 minutes where the EP talked through the interviewer's earpiece.
In a way I like Hans' ambition and energy and I'd like him to be for real, but all I know about chess and life tells me otherwise. The way he crushes SGMs is just unbelievable. I mean watch how he demolished Hikaru in this game (/watch?v=NfClsJScfBw) and how he recently destroyed Aronian in 20 moves. If Magnus' rating is around 2850, Hans demonstrates an even higher rating than that by crushing the best GMs in this brilliant fashion.
Remember how until recently everybody expected Alireza to be the next challenger and although he is truly a brilliant player, as he demonstrated since he was a kid, you can see how hard it is even for him to break through. Everybody knew about Alireza, Prag, Nihal, but Hans emergence was very sudden and unexpected.
Yeah, and these super GMs who've played against computers before realize that Hans play like a computer. The issue is none of them figure out how did Hans cheated. Technology has become so advanced it might not be possible to catch a clever cheater.
I wonder if other top GMs will start boycotting as well? Cc: Hikaru Nakamura.

"Do you suspect that Hanz has cheated?"
"I'm not gonna comment on that" - this is just like saying "yes, yes I do"
Magnus thinks he is being cute and is following legal advice. He has already gone too far and directly saying that in his OPINION Neimann cheated would not change anything. He is giving the appearance of trying to smear someone without evidence. He should simply state that he has no direct evidence but FEELS that Neimann is cheating.
@@peytonlucy5947 I'm not defending Magnis by any mean, but this is the result of free speach, it's not like Magnus its banning Hainz from playing in tournaments or something, he only put some of his elo points at stake. And that's why I don't think he can or should be sued.
For me, I'm surprise competitive chess continue to exist at this level after the rise of better then human chess AI. Magnus and other GMs are what they define as "cheater" themselves, they use strong engines and use them to memories the best possible moves when preparing to play against an adversar. Moreover, those who win lots of tournaments like Magnus, can hire a whole team to do this for them, and they can just memories the best moves after. What difference is this from asking a live engine? I'm not saying they are not incredible good players who will obliterate casual players like me without a thought, but it looks like more and more competitive games transforms into some kind of luck game, and only a few that don't shows us the true power of the chess players after they go out of their preparation.
@@peytonlucy5947 Multiple super GMs "feeling" that Niemann is cheating is sufficient proof really because how the fk do you even catch a clever cheater? Tech is so advanced. Even back in the day, no one can catch Ivanov red handed lol. Only the really stupid cheater will ever be caught.

From what I see the events and this interview is that Magnus is really unmotivated in playing chess. It's kind of sad seeing him like this. He's saying that chess makes him happy but I don't think it is the case anymore. I have said in other sites before that he will wait with his comments until the tournaments end. The fact that he behaves like that is because he really likes the rising young talents who one side relight the extinguished fire and motivation in him. That's why on the other side of the story, he wants to protect Niemann's rising reputation as long as he can.

What about the podcast with fabi?
Yeah, agree with Hikaru's comments that Magnus is confident. Also, keep in mind Magnus's hint that people support him more privately than publicly, which is a hint that the information he has makes those in his private circle supportive. In my opinion, despite his confidence and what we can interpret based on his comments, he really has nothing on Hans for OTB chess, and I wouldn't be surprised after the tournament if his additional statements lead to no more information re cheating in OTB chess.

No it’s not the same questions over and over. One is your personal opinion on punishment for cheating, the other is an objective take on the matter. In the subjective question he can exposes his individual take on cheating in the other not. Interviewer aren’t stupid
One point no one discuss is why did the Play Magnus Group (now a public company) in which Magnus is a minority shareholder, special advisor, ambassador and nr 1 player of their major tournaments - according to the Play Magnus Group website - invited Hans Niemann. As this tournament is organized by the Play Magnus Group. For sure everyone knew already that Hans Niemann had 2 incidents of cheating in his past (one at 12 and one at 16). And I assume Play Magnus Group had contracted Hans Niemann before the Sinquefield Cup where he beat Magnus after which Magnus withdrew from that tournament. Therefore you can only suggest that Magnus 'issue' with Hans Niemann came from the match in the Sinquefield Cup, not from what happened years back. Most likely the Play Magnus Group as listed company didnt want to cancel the contract with Hans Niemann or maybe they tried but not succeeded. Still dont know why this is not coming into the equation. Just wondering from that point of view.
Hans qualified for the tournament so they cant help it but invite him.

Magnus Carlsen's condition and demeanor when speaking on the question in regards to his life and how he's currently doing is slightly concerning.. I hope that this isn't too much pressure for him as a person and I hope that this drama hasn't put him in a position which will taint his reputation for the rest of his life. I hope this isn't the beginning of something deeper.
His father seems like an honestly principled person who wants the best for Magnus. I expect when Magnus needs him, he will be wise in his counsel, and Magnus will, after the downfall, become much stronger than any chess player in history, not just in chess, but in character too.
