    His Floatwheel low key obliterated the GT in a 3 minute video. It’s virtually impossible to nose dive at 15 mph, at 20 mph it’s only 65% duty cycle, and he demonstrated how casual it is to hit 29 mph on a Floatwheel with a phone and cup of coffee in his hand. Game over.

    If you're a lighter rider, Onewheel is all you need. But for heavier Clydesdales, going from a GT to FW is like going from a stock OG Pint to a GT and then some. FWs sheer torque and power is way more apparent on steep hills that you heavy riders are all too familiar with. I'm shocked every time I climb one and I'm still not used to it!

    Excellent safety feature. If hard the term bandied about in other videos, but not and context purified with it. Thank you. I'll definitely be sending in a feature request with the app that provides: 1. Real-time reporting of the duty cycle, 2. Positive notification (in app) of danger limit being reached. The in app notification will translate to audible or haptic alerts through the phone or smart watches. The issue with the previous audible alert is that it was through the board only which was difficult to discern under most circumstances of riding. (I never heard it unless I was riding by a wall which reflected the sound back at me)

But in my opinion, and I know that I might be in the minority here, but 20 mph on a one wheel is plenty fast enough for me. A wreck at 20 and your gonna get hurt. A wreck at 25-30.. you're probably goin to the hospital. So im perfectly happy with my completely stock gt.

    Something I haven't found a solid answer on: is duty cycle adjusted as battery voltage drops?

    • @nicoaleman
      @nicoaleman Před 9 měsíci +9

      Yes, it's Voltage based essentially. More complex than that, but all you need to know is it's a pretty damn accurate representation of motor load, at least when trying to anticipate high speed related nosedives

    • @DoctorDugong21
      @DoctorDugong21 Před 9 měsíci +3

      @@nicoaleman Thanks! So that's for high speed nosedives... what about sudden torque demand? For example, if I'm riding at 80% duty cycle with 84V and hit a big pothole but make it through without nosediving, should I expect to be able to do that at 80% duty cycle at 55V? (I'm guessing that 2nd scenario would be lower speed while still at 80% duty cycle, due to the lower voltage.)

    • @nicoaleman
      @nicoaleman Před 9 měsíci +1

      @DoctorDugong21 If you're in a scenario where you're already cruising upwards of 80% DC, duty cycle is most likely what's going to be what tops out in a potential nosedive. It's mainly low speed torque like crawling up a hill or hard accelerating from a stop that it could more likely be motor or battery current hitting their limits, causing a nosedive before DC maxes out. This is almost definitely what Haptic Buzz and previously the beep is based on when you hear it go off while jamming the nose or pushing in a high torque scenario

      Pushback or Haptic Buzz could easily be made to be Duty Cycle based instead of speed based, making them dynamic to the board's actual headroom and riding conditions rather than static. I don't see it happening with Pushback, because there's legal implications of why it's set to kick in at 20, but would be awesome for Haptic Buzz to be Duty Cycle based at least. Could make a pretty convincing argument to the CPSC that it enhances the safety of the board compared to the current implementation, which could be deceiving about the amount of headroom left if you're for example trying to haul high speed uphill as a heavy rider in cold temps at low battery (extreme example of course, just emphasizing how a static speed for pushback/buzz isn't very informative)

    i think the reason they dont want to show duty cycle on the onewheel app is because they dont want people pushing their board close to 80-90 percent duty constsntly, but thats my assumption. Duty cycle woulrnstill be a nice feature from FM but i am very sure they wouldlnt implement it for a l9ng time

    I for one am not willing to stare at a phone or even watch for this live information (I mostly street ride and have zero faith in humanity). However, it would be awesome if there was configurable haptic feedback on the board itself that reports this kind of data. Something like X vibrates in a row for crossing Y% duty cycle, obviously with some kind of back-off so it isn't buzzing all the time when close to a threshold. That way you can keep your eyes on your surroundings and have valuable feedback at the same time.

    A safety feature where you have to keep looking at your phone (or watch) while going 20mph+ doesn't seem that safe to me.. Also I know my phone constantly disconnects from my board while riding so this wouldnt be very reliable compared to the haptic buzz

    • @Zetler
      @Zetler Před 9 měsíci +3

      Duty cycle can be monitored through voice alerts to your phone or AirPod. But guess what. The Floatwheel have haptic buzz also. The difference is the rider’s choice and options.

    • @nicoaleman
      @nicoaleman Před 9 měsíci

      Ideally, you would have pushback and/or haptic buzz be based on Duty Cycle, rather than a static set speed like it is now. Way more informative to the rider since it's dynamic to the ride conditions and gives a more accurate sense of the headroom available.

    Definitely safer than the haptic buzz! Why feel a little buzz under your feet when you are nearing the max duty of the motor when I could be staring down at my phone trying to watch a little gauge? High speed multitasking is far more advanced! I wish FM knew more about safety, those silly geese.

      Obviously not ideal, but no reason it has to stay limited to being just a number in the app. Pushback and haptic buzz are currently both based on speed, kicking in starting at around 20mph. This is not dynamic, it will kick in at these speeds regardless of riding conditions.
      What would be safer is if these were instead based on Duty Cycle rather than a set speed. That would be MUCH more informative to the rider on the board's current load, even if they kept it real conservative by kicking in at like 65% DC. This would make it kick in sooner when the board is under extra load than normal, such as being low battery, going uphill, in cold temps, etc. in order to better reflect how much headroom the board actually has, rather than a basic "you are going 20mph."

    • @dezh2544
      @dezh2544 Před 9 měsíci

      @@nicoaleman Then maybe vesc users (since they can do anything) can just integrate a buzz or beep that’s based off DC instead of speed… Any vesc users think of that? Maybe that’s not even possible. Regardless, there’s nothing more “safe” about this feature compared to what FM has… If you want my honest opinion about this feature I feel like this information is pretty much useless…. These boards are getting to the point where they can only go so fast and realistically be able to climb so much… This extra info about DC isn’t really helping you at a certain point….

    • @nicoaleman
      @nicoaleman Před 9 měsíci +3

      @dezh2544 Yes, Onewheels can only go so fast, and Duty Cycle based alerts (whether buzz or beep or pushback or otherwise) help give an actual indication of how close you are to that line. FM's current pushback/buzz does not do this, it just tells you you're going 20mph. FM themselves keep touting how important and beneficial it is to have any kind of communication you can from the board to the rider so the rider can be better informed, and this is about just that.
      FWIW, I'm comfortable enough on my board that I have a good idea of where this line is regardless and prefer to just ride without any pushback or beep/buzz. But especially for newer riders that aren't in tune with their boards like that yet, this is extremely beneficial to help them associate how much headroom the board has, and how that's affected in different conditions that impact the board's performance.
      And to answer your first thing, yeah pretty much from the start, VESC has had tons of ways of alerting at whatever Duty Cycle you want, such as pushback, buzzer, audio alerts through an app, and haptic buzz currently in testing as well. Tons of VESC riders take full advantage of this and love it, it allows them to confidently ride with much better knowledge on just how much headroom is left in the board, so that they can ride accordingly. It's just outright more informative and safer.

    • @dezh2544
      @dezh2544 Před 9 měsíci

      @@nicoaleman Good response. Other than the last “it’s just outright… safer”, I can pretty much break even with the argument. Here’s my next overall question and argument that you may not want to tackle here but there’s obviously so much VESC arguments out there. Some say it’s great, others think that all you need to enjoy yourself is a stock board from Onewheel. With so much confidence on your end as a member of float life and an avid VESC user, what’s next? Float life has been built around Onewheel for so long. They constantly bash them and make cheap accessories to piggyback off their success to put money in their own pocket. How long will that go on? Other than a cool channel with some pretty awesome dudes, what do you have to show for it? The argument could be made that VESC isn’t it. VESC is just a community take it or leave it accessory. Will you guys end up making your own board? Actually attempt to out engineer Onewheel and prove them irrelevant? You seem to know so much more than FM… You guys bash FM for not innovating but the fact is they’ve released new products and are providing a growing population of happy riders. Now FM has Bodhi working with them to keep awesome content coming and grow the sport 👀 Like, what’s next from this crew? I think Bodhi knew all along that FM has been doing it right from the start and they are the ones kickstarting, innovating, and satisfying the market… In the meantime there’s a awful lot of smart heads out there that act like FM doesn’t know what in the world they’re doing🧐
