City most attacks are coming from KDB, supplying for Haaland. Shut him off, and u shut down 80% of city threat. The only moment fred and team missed marking KDB, it led to City s goal. KDB is class, but ETH has shown other teams how to shut off City. Fred was playing as the role of Park Jisung in Fergie s era, though not as good, but hope fred can improve further.

    My main takeaways :
    1. Bruno still works best in the middle
    2. Need a direct running winger like Garnacho
    3. Casemiro reading of play is good but very sloppy passing today
    4. Need to integrate Weghorst quickly because Martial is made of glass
    5. Haaland completely went missing today, ETH's tactics nullified his threat.
    6. Really need Fred in big games because of his energy, Eriksen's tackles lack bite. What a job Fred did on De Bruyne.
    7. Perhaps it's a tactical tweak from ETH but once Garnacho came on, AWB also started bombing forward far more which gave City more problems.

    5. No room for Haaland in the box means no damage or threat
    6. Fred was solid on KvD
    7. Missing Pogba? No! United now have three lethal passers for Rashy, Antony, and Garnacho: Casemiro, Eriksen, and Bruno

I have always said that as much as Haaland is a beast when it comes to scoring goals, playing as a false 9 is not his strength nor is intense pressing.
In my honest observation, I think City work perfectly when Alvarez is playing in that centre forward/ false 9 role because he is very intense with his pressing, tracking back and his small size enables him to dribble in tight spaces. Alvarez is more of a Guardiola player and I know I might get attacked for saying this since most City fans are obsessed with Haaland.
As much as we criticized the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Sterling for not being as clinical as we needed them to be, their intense and tireless running really helped City a lot. Sterling was not always a clinical guy especially in big games but he always instilled fear in the opposition with his pace. The opposition's fullbacks and entire defence could not push forward because of Sterling lurking on the wing and his fast pace made defenders and fullbacks stay put thus enabling City to move the ball quicker and more fluid.
Now after the departure of Jesus and Sterling, the opposition defenders are not as particularly worried about being out-paced. The only player I'd say opponents worry about on the wings is Foden. Grealish is a different player to Sterling. Haaland is a different player to Jesus. Haaland is of course more clinical but Jesus is more like a tireless runner and hard worker. He creates opportunities for others to score.
I always knew that City bringing in a typical striker was not going to be the answer. City needed a good finisher but not necesaarily a striker. Peps system works best without a striker. Even Aguero had to convert to a false 9 under Pep and since Aguero had a much smaller body compared to Haaland, he performed better in that false 9 role.
Zinchenko is another guy who was really underrated at City. His intelligent positioning both in attack and defence helped City a lot. Not saying Cancelo has not helped City, he obviously has done so massively but Zinchenko was just more fluid and less error-prone. The only thing that Zinchenko lacked for a fullback was pace but he covered that with very smart positioning and his ability to read the game was also really good. My 2 cents.

It's just that city's players are technically declining so we're putting in less dangerous chances, which have reduced to less overall chances probably because of the criticism of being too reliant on haaland, so he received less of the ball. We need another target man in an explosive winger to replace the likes of sane and sterling to take on their man and create chances to reduce our one-dimensionality in attempting to just play through the centre rather than just alvarez over haaland, we faced similar problems at Soton with the lack of creativity. And I completely agree on zinchenko like the loss at Anfield, but honestly, i think fernandinho's departure was also really crushing, he just had the passion and winning mentality to put everything he had into his game but for now I think that Dias' injury is the biggest current problem in our defence. There's just a lack of discipline and leadership back there, which could explain our laziness on the ball rather than the fast-paced exciting man city from 17/18 to 21/22.

In terms of the 3rd free man on the wing(triangle) you would then have Fernandes free to block this extra man (being the fullback) on the right and eriksen being free to block the fullback on the left--in turn martial and Rashford are free to block rodri or the spare pass in defence -- I think defensively Ten Hag is doing very well which creates a solid foundation to win the ball in almost any area of the pitch for a speedy counter, and because your CAMs are shadow blocking the CDM/s or fullbacks then you have the bases to use them quickly as they're already in position to free martial/Rashford who were shadow blocking the CBs. ETH decided to play City at their game to highlight the fact to owners, fans and indeed the players that the players were not up to the required standard and that they would need to adhere to his methods in order to get results. I meant to add that you must be very circumspect when you add what you consider to be the final part of the jig saw. City added a goal scoring centre forward in the belief that it would make them unbeatable, they made the same mistake about 50 years ago when their then celebrity manager, Malcolm Allison, brought in one Rodney Marsh in the belief that it would copper

You could see that the adjustment of using Walker, Mahrez and De Bruyne worked out for them in the goal. Walker drags Malacia out of position and creates the space for KDB to drive into. Rashford was aware of the run quick enough and the damage was done once Mahrez played it into space. As for United, I think they did well for most of the game pressurising the wingers especially. Anytime the ball was played into a wide area which a lot of the times it was to Malacia's side, he would engage. Sometimes a little too overzealous but it worked to get them out of rhythm.

    Great video as always!
A great game and a real derby. City's build up play was decent at the weekend but they are uncharacteristically showing poor quality in the fianl third. They also appear to be playing too safe and too slow. I don't expect this to continue however. Full credit to United and ETH. Post Ferguson, this United team look more organised, more effective in possesion and very fit. IMO, they will challenge for the title & win the League cup.
    All the best!

All nice to discuss the tactics and that and Ten Hag did do a good job at planning out a strategy to allow United to win. But the reality of it was that United's victory was owed to a bad interpretation of the offside rule by the officials. Without that call, City win or at best United may have nicked a draw but that's specualtion because one doesn't know if United would have scored the anther without the first goal. All in all the sign of progress is that United were able to put themselves in a postition that would allow them to reap the benefits of a blown call. That in and by itself is a sign of improvement from a squad that was losing to the likes of Watford, Southampton and Everton and drawing against Burnley 1 year ago.

  • @Waawawiwaa

7/10 for United because they had more shots on target(4:1) and played a dangerous transitional football and 5/10 for City because though they enjoy 70% possession, there are hardly any activities in the United penalty box.

Haaland as good as he is. I have yet to hold my head and say “wow”, he’s a fox in the box, 6 yard striker. Easy when you’re in a city team making chances with 70-80% of the ball a lot of the games. Simply shut down past couple of games.

    • @niksutliff
      @niksutliff Pƙed rokem +1

I think he's incredible when you are facing lesser opposition that cannot match man for man, but against a top-level team, it's harder for him. His game isn't there yet. That being said, shutting down city was as much a function of "just have Casemiro possibly the greatest holding midfielder ever" than anything else. Here city had 70% possession but united limited them to only one big chance and 5 shots total. Not many teams will be able to do that.
