They were legit about 4 goals away from a historic quadruple, something they didn't even come close to doing during their supposed peak. Now, they are in transition, and it will take them about 2 years before they can contend again, but if FSG aren't stingy and spend money on some midfielders, who knows how quick they will be in getting back to that level they had last season.

I have always thought that having Firmino drop deep, Mane did it too on occasions, especially in big games, while talked about, maybe wasn't given enough credit for Liverpool's success, having that player that is tactically able to play forward and midfield positions, and do running required to be at the spots required by each position was the secret sauce that made liverpool hum. When I watched Gakpo at the world cup, I was like, we NEED to go get him.

I genuinely don't understand what ETH was thinking before the game. LFC's worst nightmare this season has been other teams exploiting TAA's poor defensive positioning, by either attacking the space behind him, beating him in the box or suchlike. Why then use MUFC's best weapon for that as a ST? Rashy got pinned down by VVD playing in the center and none of the attacking players were able to threaten LFC at all basically, whilst letting LFC play to their strengths in both offense and defense? Salah, Nuñez and Gakpo really haven't had their best seasons so far of course, but you can't let LFC exploit the right halfspace like that, with speedy players like Elliott and Salah. Utd basically played reactive defense, putting Shaw in a 2v1, where he got outplayed every time, leaving Licha in a 2v1 or even 3v1 at times because Shaw rarely tracked back after his defensive mistakes.
I'm only at UEFA C level coaching but anyone could understand that gameplan was at fault. Also the lack of changes once he realized the problem is concerning. Swapping Rashy-Bruno-Wout into their regular positions, maybe even bring on Malacia to deal with the problems defensively would've helped. I feel like ETH tried so hard, overthinking every single match-up on the field, that he instead failed in all areas because of it.

There has been a lot of talk about United exhaustion, but Liverpool has been playing as many matches. For me Ten Hag suffers with adjustments. He has lost by big margins when his press is properly countered. In the game against Barcelona we saw two managers with fixed ideas of their game, and Barcelona has had trouble against the high press. 7-0 can’t be chalked up to players alone.

I’m a United fan and it’s not an excuse whatsoever. Gegenpressing involves lots of fitness so the players are constantly training intensely to build stamina. United under OGS got complacent in training and were slacking in terms of fitness, considering OGS never really encouraged pressing, but told his team to sit back and counter attack, as well as make individual plays if necessary. Under Ralf there were so many injuries because he actually employed an intense regimen to build fitness for his pressing tactics, which failed miserably as the players were getting injured left and right due to almost three seasons of “good vibes” hands off training under OGS. Now with ETH the players look like they’re getting there in terms of stamina and fitness, but it’s still a work in progress.

Seems to me the TAA X Salah combination is being replicated on the other side with Robertson X Nunez but TAA is a genuine right back with a very high precision for a long cross.
Earlier in several streams, most Man Utd fans were dissing TAA as weak but that's because many club managers already knew how dangerous it is to leave TAA alone so they always have him in a 2:1 situation. This was what Klopp has to exploit or balance out to thin the opponent midfield, so that Nunez in the early days can pressure mid with Thiago and Fabinho. But now we have Gakpo in the middle, and Nunez at left, they can both pressure and get in deep whether mid or front.
If only Gini was still around, he would be great with Thiago and Fabinho in mid and our midfield weakness would be more forgiving.
