    Nice Start Gary, good luck with the remainder of the build.
    I "built" The Airfix Stirling back in the 70's and that was a horrible experience. This one looks better and I've thought of building one of these as a tribute to F/Sgt Arthur Aaron who came from near where I currently live. He was awarded a VC for his actions in saving his aircraft and crew at the loss of his own life. It was his 20th mission and he was 21 years old.
    I might do it if I can find the decals or a mask for the serial numbers.

    Amazing build Gary, looks like a beauty of a kit for sure. I to returned to the hobby after a 30 year lapse. Continued adding to my stash over the years, whenever my tours took me to a hobby spot. 2 years ago I picked up the Eduard 1/48 Spitfire Story The Few. Bought the kit because Douglas Bader is my all time favorite fighter pilot. I have shied away from it because of all the Photo-Etch and piddly parts, lack of confidence. I dove into it on October 1st feeling like my skills have gone up a notch. Slow going, however, fun and very rewarding. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and passing on your knowledge. I look forward to your builds and find them very inspiring. Carry On! By the way my stash has grown to about 65 kits. I had an older brother pass away in 2020 and I inherited his stash, spent a lot of time swapping ideas and plans about adding BCATP kits to our stashes and just having fun in the hobby.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Před rokem +1

      Yes, there have been transparent "see-though" kits in the past so it is possible, but I don't know if the transparent parts can be moulded to the same detail as the grey plastic for those who just wish to paint it. Would be a good option to have with so much detail inside.

  • @Adam_Boots
    @Adam_Boots Před rokem +1

    I did a search specifically for the Mk III just in case there was a version difference. I found an image of a crashed Mk III which clearly shows the bar on the frame on that side.
    Searching for this should give you the right page as the first link.
    20/21.05.1943 No. 149 Squadron Stirling III
    BK714 OJ-L Sq/Ldr. Howell
    I'd be tempted to try and create the bar from scratch using a thin strip of plastic sheet and using micro clear to attach it to the canopy. Not having the raised frame would probably look a bit odd.
    It's a pity they made this mistake as the rest of the detail on the kit is fantastic.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Před rokem +1

      I masked ti as if it had a bar there. I don't want to risk adding anything so I'll ee how it comes out. It will have a primer layer plus at least two coats of paint plus varnish so it might have a natural edge anyway...

    • @Adam_Boots
      @Adam_Boots Před rokem +1

      @@garys_stuff The primer should hopefully help. An extra layer or 2 done by hand on the bar might help as well. Mr Surfacer 500 could possibly help a lot with a single coat now the masking it on though I can definitely see your point about not taking the risk. It's the sort of thing to practice on a cheap kit first before relying on it on a bigger build.
      I am curious to see how it works. I hate painting canopies as I do them by hand at the moment without masking. The cocktail stick tip from previous videos is a godsend.

Like the cockpit controls - the end result is very impressive and looks complicated, but as you demonstrate every time you make a model it's a matter of taking your time and doing each piece methodically. Thanks - I use a canopy mask set that is pre-cut for the specific kit. This one was made by Eduard - set EDCX629 - which is for the Italeri Stirling Mk.III. For smaller jobs, like a 1/48 Spitfire, I make my own masks by doing the edges with thin masking tape then filling in the rest with bigger bits or with masking fluid. If you use a commercial mask there may be parts of the more curved areas that also needs masking fluid. When all the painting is done and dry, I use a cocktail stick to pick up a corner of each section then lift it off with tweezers. Finally, you can get rid of any small spill areas by rubbing with the cocktail stick.
