    Good job Gary. A triumph of undercarriage jiggery- pokery. Cheers!🍻

  • @ianallan8005
    @ianallan8005 Před rokem +1

    In order to help the Stirling take off, it needed an extension on its undercarriage to change the angle of incidence on the wing. So it telescopes vertically into the nacelle and then folds up like a normal undercarriage. Fun fact. The Stirlings chassis was designed by a guy named McLaren, who went on the design the folding baby pram

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Před rokem +1

      I wonder how many model makers seeing this will forever more, before folding a baby pram, say "gear up!" to no-one in particular, or unfold it with "three greens!"

    Bristol used two types of collector rings, later type has an extra baffle and that is what you see as an extra ring.
    Collector rings were nickel plated steel when left bare, but were sometimes overpainted with heat resistant pink enamel (!) and stove black to hide the glow in the night.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Před rokem +2

      Great detail, thanks! I'll remember that for future use. It did look a little rickety but if it's a baffle then I guess there is a small gap to the collector ring. Pink enamel - wonder if Vallejo does that.....?

    Your usual excellent build Gary! I share your pain with photo etch, not so much with the stuff that only requires straight bends (I use an etch folding tool for that) but multi-part etch seat harnesses give me screaming fits of the heebie-jeebies! I do not find bending minute straps into a realistic "dangle" fun in the least, give me a resin seat to paint any day.
    A tip I use for etch that isn't under any stress or supporting something I find a bit of canopy glue works for me. This also reduces the risk of so-called "super" glue fogging nearby clear parts. (Ask me how I found out "non-fogging" superglue is a misnomer!)
    Looking forward to your next build! 👍

    Really Nice work, there Gary. I remember building the Airfix Stirling when I was about 12. Even then , it was a nice kit, but when I looked again in the late 80's the mould were starting to show their Age: The canopy frame lines were almost gone altogether and the fit of some/many parts was... a bit off, too. IIRC the original RAF design specification called for a four engined bomber that could /also/ drop troops by parachute. Of the three heavies, the Stirling was the only one to satisfy both criteria, hence the taller fuselage. The Halifax and Lancaster designs just concentrated on being bombers,and IMHO the Stirling suffered by trying to do both.

    I wonder how the complexity of the Airfix build compares to the Italeri? I suspect it's a lot less complicated, given that the Airfix tooling must be decades old but at least Airfix are good enough to give us crew members to go into the model!

      They could have had a collector box under the turret, I would have thought. Although they did have an awful lot of rounds, around 10,000 I think for the tail. The complexities of the undercarriage on the sterling stem from the take off run being deemed too long by the raf. This would have required major alterations to the wing design to achieve and also would have had the effect of the aircraft having a pronounced nose down attitude in level flight (like the AW whitley). The solution shorts went with instead was to lengthen the undercarriage length, which added complexity.
    Also, the design it was made to stipulated a 100ft wingspan limit and this combined with the thick wing severely limited its performance,especially altitude. A lot of similarities with the Sunderland are in the design as well.
    The cover behind the h2s dome is where on some versions there was a extra gun fitted to deter fighters from underneath, especially the ones fitted with the dreaded music device which fired upwards.

    What’s the difference between the Sterling, Manchester , Lancaster and Halifax planes (apologies if this is a novice question) I’m love looking at models and the work that goes into them I really appreciate the work but I clearly don’t know much these planes. ❤️

      I'll gladly reply in more detail but I'm up against it with video editing right now (!!!) - but look them up on Wikipedia and there's a lot of good history. Basically the Stirling (4 engines) was first into service, the Manchester (2 engines) and Halifax (4 engines) next, then the Lancaster (a development of the Manchester with four engines).

      Every airplane has the same goal, but type requirements and overcoming unique problems result in very great variations.
      Googling the types will give you more informations.

      You forgot the Wellington, too, basically the Avro Manchester was the forerunner of the Avro Lancaster that's the initial point but I may suggest Google to find out more history, look for the Avro Lincoln too

    you make a canny job on the airbrusing i have to say Gary , its the faff of cleaning up that really puts me off airbrushing and getting the right mix so the damn thing does'nt clog up and get the dreaded tip dry !!!!

      I know Shaun, I do spend a lot of time cleaning the darned thing. Might need to use retarder a bit more, but then the paint takes so long to dry!

    Excellent videos.......I had my tongue poking out the corner of my mouth, in sympathy, during the more fiddly bits............like the undercart! You ever think of doing the Trumpeter FW200 Condor, now THERE is a pig on an undercarriage...you ever do, I'll be watching to see how it's done

      Oh, Shane, I'd LOVE to do the FW.200, of course I would, except, er.... er...., oh, yes, I've got a coupe of dozen other kits to do. And no room. And I don't have the right paints. And, erm, that's all I can offer by way of excuse.....!

    Nice build garry just ashame the decals let you down red to bright and the wrong color dingy hatch marking should be red not yellow cracking build nice idea with the undercarriage too looking forward to doing mine now

      @garys_stuff  Před rokem +2

      Thought they looked bright - I'm used to a rather duller red on night bombers. For the gear I'd definitely make a little track in one of the mounting plates in the wing to allow the peg of the gear to slip in more easily. but it does go...

      Just by cutting up bits of masking tape - I use Frog Tape.

    Hi Gary, what do you use to dispense the microset solution? I use a brush but find it pools like mercury and I don’t get an even coverage. I’m considering trying a different product like mr mark. Great build.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  Před rokem +1

      I use a water colour brush (my one is a Derwent Watercolour). On gloss it will tend to pool anyway, not a lot you can do about it unless you have a product with lower surface tension... Just don't flood the surface with it, the varnish will be 'wetted' by it with a brush-over, then add more once the decal is down.
