I Don't Want To Tune My Guitar To BDDDDD For One Song (Iris In Standard Tuning)

  • I haven't done a guitar lesson in a while. So I thought I'd make the most of my down time while on a gig, so I brought my acoustic guitar along to film a quick lesson on how to play the intro to Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls in standard tuning. The original version is notoriously tuned to the insane tuning of B-D-D-D-D-D. But most of us don't want to re-string our guitar to tune this way just for one song. So here is how to play the intro in the much more convenient standard tuning.
And for a bit of fun, I've included some outtakes which led me to film outside this beautiful venue that is Stow House in Milton Keynes. Finding somehwere to film these videos when on a gig can be rather tricky as shown in this video.

Interesting… I do it this way…….Play the first chord with X507XX (3 Ds) and resolve it to X5003X (3 Ds and that all important G resolution) …... You can stick a bit of X506XX as the transitional chord in between the two when it does those ocassional 4/4 bits…. Such as at the beginning of the song and just before the slide solo. :). Great exercise in string dampening! I let the sense of movement comes from the bass player and the vocals. Not perfect. I knew exactly what song you were referring to in your title! Think I might try your way :)

Ahh, interesting. As long as it works for you. I know when I came up with this version (many moons ago) I wanted to get the high notes of the mandolin (I think it's a mandolin) with the fullness of the guitar. If you do try this way, let me know what you think. Cheers!

use a guitar synthesizer or a line 6 variax, I use both at once. works great for all open tunings

I've been intrigued by the Variax. Would love to get hold of one and try ti with the Helix.

@@ProFunctionist if you have the Helix, then you will be able to control the variax along with the Helix patches through the footswitches or midi PC and/or CC changes. It opens up all the palettes of guitar/ pickup/ open tunings configurations.
