  • Welcome Gardeners! Today let’s talk about some plants that can handle the 🔥HEAT🔥! Here are 5 plants that I’ve noticed are handling our heatwaves this summer likes it’s just another day! These plants laugh in the face of triple digit temps (while I’m inside with the AC 😅) ☀️ Enjoy!

    This is awesome for those living in our hellish dry hot area! Janey and Robbie are a great resource for our area. I also found a new youtuber that lives in the Sacramento area called The Drought Proof Garden. He seems to be focusing on vegetable gardening but has good insights. Our garden climate doesn't get a lot of vlogging so I wanted to spread awareness of his channel.

    See, this is why it’s important for us in California to look at our sunset hardiness zones. I’m also zone 9b in Northern California. I live near the coast, though, which means I don’t get the triple digit temperatures and I have long periods of gray foggy weather in the summer.

    Hi Janey, I so appreciate the information you give for each plant, especially the characteristics or structures. It helps me remember as I create my shopping list for next spring. Even though I’m only in a zone 5, I too am turning towards heat tolerant plants with climate change. I love scaveola and Lantana! 🌸❤️🇨🇦

    Thank you for a very well thought out video! I'm in Zone8b, San Antonio, TX area and it has been my experience that my lantanas (both upright & trailing) have never been an invasive plant for me in my 20 years of the initial planting. When many other cannot handle our extreme hot temps and drought conditions, this one does extremely well. And even in the odd years of freezing temps TX experienced, these plants came back reliably.

    You had me worried a minute over my Hibiscus 🌺 I’ve never heard they had a determinate version lol I got the PW Edge of Night last year she’s so gorgeous this year! Blooms everyday … I just ordered one from Garden Crossings Summer In Paradise it looked like a warm pinky red salmon watermelon color I hope so lol Thanks 🤍🤍🤍

  • @itsmewende
    @itsmewende Před 11 měsíci

    Love all of these, lantana is my favorite. First time I went to my in law's home, they had one at the corner of the sidewalk and driveway, it was a small shrub. I have no idea what kind it was, or if they still exist, that was 35 yrs ago. Here on the shore of Maryland, Hibiscus grows wild in the marsh. They are becoming fewer tho, I remember 40 yrs ago my mom would dig them up for the waterfront edge.

  • @pennybourban3712

    I guess they are so commonplace that no one bothers to mention them but Pelargoniums don't mind the heat if watered well enough. I don't consider them high water users.

    • @natalielaguilar7914
      @natalielaguilar7914 Před 11 měsíci

      Can you share some advice on petunias? I seem to always kill them. I’ve tried planting in shade with little water and with moist soil then I tried full sun with moist soil and a little dry soil. I’m in zone 9b

    • @pennybourban3712
      @pennybourban3712 Před měsícem

      My Pentas survived the winter which I had not expected. I agree about the Vinca which I assume you mean Catharanthus roseus and not the trailing groundcover. They ignore the heat and look so formal.

    So excited to see how the chatulpa does, it’s so pretty. We had a catalpa tree in western Washington and we called it the vanilla bean tree. Quick question about your berries, mine are absolutely scorched. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. We’re in the same area-ish, Weiser. Mine have absolutely scorch this year. I did replant them and put them in a different spot. They get late afternoon sun well they actually get full sun all day but late afternoon sun, do you think that could be what’s going on with them or could it be my soil?

    Calylophus doesn’t do well here in southern New England. The nights apparently are too warm. Does great early in spring but not summer time. I reread the cultural specs and somehow missed that or I wouldn’t have grown them for resale. Oh well

    How does the hibiscus do with overhead watering in zone 9b, full sun (I’m in Bakersfield, CA)? I have a fountain that has a pretty aggressive splash 💦 overhead which gives me a bog type area for planting and I really love the summer color that hibiscus give but didn’t think it could handle the constant wet leaves and petals with the full sun, I’m thinking sun burn? I have irises (spring bloom color) and elephant ear and calla lily, that’s showing some scorching where the overhead water sits. Any experience with overhead water (all day)+full sun?
