I just wanted to add my own comment here.
I am disabled, and so not able to walk around without a walker. This limits me to playing games that are chair-friendly. I also use my Quest 2 for virtual travel, visiting places I can not go to physically and what I find best of all.... Watching movies on a giant screen. Especially 3-D movies... They are awesome.
Even if it means playing or watching movies that I can enjoy while I sit in a swivel chair... so sweet!
Mixed Reality... Since I can't walk around with the headset on, I could not care less about this feature.
My only interest is the ability to escape into a virtual space, whether that be an island, an airplane ride, game environment or sitting in a virtual theater watching movies on a (virtual) big screen.... That's what is important to me.

Yeah man i think quest 3 is just unnecesary by the moment. I think mixed reality is just pointless for everyone, i mean, we all want vr for extraordinary experiences, not for watching our room which we see every day 😂 i would upgrade in 1 or 2 years when games are developed for quest 3 from the begining, which will take a long time. Quest 2 is best value-cost btm by far

@agussanz5227 pass through is pretty sweet, I use it all the time, when watching videos in the headset I like to keep it one so I'm still present in reality, also helpful for doing quick little things without removing the headset. There aren't a ton of games that take advantage of it tbh, the coolest one imo is demeo, cubism is cool too. Overall MR is cool and nice to have, but it isn't the most important thing

For the battery saver mode, where you running 'Meta Quest build 57.0' or 'Meta Quest build 59.0' as I do believe releases 57 display a 'Battery Saver' option when the developer mode is enabled and that version of the battery saver mode simply prevented the screen rendering from bumping-up virtual matrices resolution.

Thanks for throwing your hat into the ring with this.. My first and only experience with VR was the Occulus Rift S and I was impressed enough that the desire to get back into VR hasn't left me. My quandary has been a budgetary one, but the overwhelming concern is whether it's truly a mindful saving going with the Quest 2 (still ostensibly a step up from the Rift S, although many seem to call it a side upgrade) or take the leap to Quest 3. Having some experience of VR makes me feel that the Quest 3 is the right choice but it's insight such as this which helps me weigh the option, so thanks!

I'm gonna wait for the Quest 4 (or whatever the next version is called) for three reasons: 1. The Quest 3's black levels still suck. They are a washed-out grey which totally ruins the immersion in dark scenes in games. 2. The processing power is still bad. I'm not expecting a stand-alone headset to run Unreal Engine 5.1 in 4k at 90Hz but come on, it still looks like 1990's graphics. 3. The FOV is still bad. Feels like wearing blinders.

I recently did the same thing, went back to the quest 2 as the 3 was being used by another family member. I only really play beat saber, so this is a comparison for that game only.
    Things I noticed right away:
1.) refresh rate of the quest 3 is noticeable.
2.) lens PPI didn't really matter to me. Neither one of them look great to me. color reproduction is close enough. Wish quest 3 would have done OLED.
3.) tracking seems to be better on quest 3.
4.) game totally playable, once you get into the game you don't notice much of a difference.
5.) quest 3 is noticeably snappier outside of game.
If you have a quest 2, and you just play games like beat saber casually, I really don't think the upgrade is worth $500. It's also worth noting that my glasses scratched the quest 3 lenses. I wouldn't wear glasses on that headset without spacers or something to protect them.

A simple chinstrap like you would find on a bicycle helmet or skating helmet takes 100% of the weight off the front, letting you have a secure fit, without the headset being smashed against your face. If you didn't use an external battery with your Q2, you did not spend much time in VR. A 30watt USB battery is less than $50 and will let you use the Q3 all day long.

I have a similar experience going from the Quest Pro back to the Quest 2. I could never EVER go back to the 2. I'm still on the fence between Quest 3 and the Pro. I remember initially feeling like the Quest 3 image felt less vibrant then the Pro. IDK if it has to do with the foveated rendering. I went back to the Pro a second time about a month after that initial transition and The Pro is 100% more comfortable. I didnt notice much (if any) difference in image quality. And I felt the Pro's FOV was SLIGHTLY smaller, or oriented different... I couldnt put my finger on it. Quest 3 controllers are the worst out of the three. WIthout that ring sticking out, it losing tracking during different movements more than Quest 2 or Pro. I want to pair my Quest Pro controllers to the Quest 3. They are garbage. Rather have Quest 2 cntrollers paired to the 3. I see absolutely no upgrade to using the Quest 3 controllers in any ways. They made it sound like they are gonna be fancy or some shit.

On the battery, yeah the Q3 eats more battery. It also has a larger battery and still empties it faster. The gen 2 chip itself draws more power (gen 1 is 50%'ish more power efficient), but also needs to work more in most cases. For example, even if you turn the additional hand tracking off, the controller tracking is now more complex with the rings gone.
I wish we would still get to a solid 2+, or 2.5+ hours of use tho, independant of the usecase. The 1.5 hours or so we mostly get feels too short. Sadly, this is the predicament we will face in the future. Most of the actual size and weight of the Q3 comes from the battery alone. If we want ever increasing performance and batteries dont make a huge breakthrough in power density, then for the coming generations we will either be looking at shorter and shorter battery lifes, default hot-swappable batteries, or simply external battery solutions like on the vision pro. That's more or less the direction it *will* have to go, considering the Q3 is already borderline acceptable in terms of battery life.

Quest 3 is a great experience, but the charging experience is terrible. You cannot charge it fast enough so the battery is going to die. I did some testing and found that the headset draws 5.1v and 1.5a from the wall. So clearly the Quest 3 is drawing more power than it can draw from the wall. I tested using a usb digital hub that shows power consumption. I also tested with my USB C cable with power injection. I really hope they fix this because anyone that does sim racing is going to need extended playing time. On my quest 2 I could maintain an 80% charge while playing and plugged into my pc using a usb cable with power injector. I really hope there is a software fix for this problem. My Q3 can no joke, track my hands and controllers in a near pitch black room with only dark purple LED string lights dimly lighting it up. I cant even see my own feet its so dark but it just works. What you're referring to is the headset using a sort of algorithm to predict where you're hands are going to go in order to more accurately follow its movements, which is what some people are complaining about. However, the only people ACTUALLY suffering this are Beat saber supremacist tryhards that are so godlike at the game that they noticed something was barely off, and took to complaining about it. For 99% of people, it wont be an issue. For the 1% that only play beatsaber, it still isn't even that big of an issue-- theres plenty of videos on YT that debunk it being an "issue".

Doesn't "population one" have a 200% LOD increase and a higher resolution?
I also wonder if "power saving" mode turns off the hand tracking, like you could on the quest 2 to save battery.

Hopefully the next gen quest will allow for charging while paying using the link cable. My quest 2 can go for 5 hrs with no power loss.

Finally, someone who reviews headsets in terms like "feel", "comfort", and "blurry", instead of terms like "pixels", "milliamps", and other tech terms. Thank you!

quest 3 will be much better once it has better looking games and good 3rd party headstraps. Until then the choice is much harder

...going back all the time for Beat-Saber & FitXR, tracking on the Quest 2 just seems better/ more stable to me and my results are better there too.

its weird because standalone population one im getting lots of lag on the quest 3 like its really really bad its like it cant handle the 4k res i had to buy a software called quest game optimizer and reduce res to 2k to make it playable

Just got a year old 128gb quest 2 for $160, and I feel like that's a W being new to VR. If I take to it, I can hone my skills while I save for a 3.
Gotta train up for Gunman: Contracts, baby!!!
