The Quest 3 device and lenses are greatly improved over the quest 2. The new pancake lenses in the quest 3 has a much larger sweet spot, and no magnification rings that caused those annoying god rays. Increased resolution and better lenses, make for a much clearer image. There are still reasons that it might be blurry however. IPD, limitations to the device, vergence accommodation conflict, dry eyes, and needing glasses or the main reasons. Check out the full video to find the tips to help.

@@danw3735 I had the same feelings. Try to find someone that has one so you can try it.
I bought Q2 last year (or so). My son had one. I bought a Q3 and it’s much clearer with adjustable IPD (mine is large at 73mm!). It is also more comfortable to wear than Q2 out of the box. I use it more than I did the Q2. Mixed Reality is quite interesting & easy to set-up.
I wear glasses so thinking of getting inserts and zyber headstrap & eventually their neck battery. I am 60 yo & into electronics/EE.
I plan on giving my daughter my old Q2 so the family can have VRChats no matter where we live.

I've only had my Quest 3 about 2 weeks now, but I'm extremely happy with it. Can't say I've noticed any chromatic aberration, except maybe at the very extreme edges of the lenses with high contrast shapes. I had an Odyssey+ for years, so even on the Quest 3's worst day, it's much clearer than the O+ ever was.

@DrEyeGuy i really don't understand why no producer says about how to measure the eye distance and I didn't know about it before now. Thanks hugely, because no any CZcamsr talking about VR take in serious consideration this and don't explain how important it is.
Huge thanks for the video and the free app link. Really!
Moreover neither the VR producers give a real tutorial about this to help the user feel more comfortable and just kick the user in the VR experience without giving them a proper tutorial, it's kinda sad and explains a lot why many people don't feel comfortable with VR.
Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU.

Very cool to see this broken down from the perspective of an opthamologist. I recently upgraded from The Quest 2 to the quest 3 and notice for me a significant increase in clarity. I've been switching back and forth and anytime I go back to my Quest 2, I wonder how I was able to use it for all those years as I had it since launch. It's one of those ignorance is bliss situations because if you don't know any better it's just fine but once you use the quest 3, the Quest 2 is a blurry mess. I've even been working in VR now using the Immersed app as the clarify is finally good enough to read documents.

The one thing ive found to help change my focus in vr is to relax and very slightly cross my eyes just until you feel the image double. It sort of resets my brain and whatever im looking at is what it default tries to focus on. Helps alot with menus and things that pop up etc. Also having the center of the display be further away then look towards the object with your eyes first then your head, helps track and bring it into focus rather then your eyes trying to immediately adjust to it.

I just got some Hons magnetic prescription lenses. The clarity is great, but I feel that as they clip within the rim of the Quest 3 lenses, they actually reduce the size, at least on first glance, of the Quest 3 lenses.
Does that really matter when your eyes are so close to them?
Also, they touch just under my eyebrows, so have to adjust the eye relief back one step.
I never had any of these issues with my Quest 2. Maybe clipping the lenses over the Quest 2 lenses was a better solution?

No offence meant, Dr EyeGuy. But simply because of CZcams's strange recommendation choices, this is the first time watching one of your video's. Firstly, what a fantastic quality video - and a big compliment to your amazing editing skills. I was one of the best video's I ever watched for both information & enjoyment. But my question comes from STILL owning the original Oculus RIFT. So when I move the (manual) PD adjuster on the RIFT, it tells me in the headset, that my clearest view is a PD of 49 (it's lowest possible setting). But when the Quest 3 first came out - some Channels stated that the lowest PD setting was 53. But now a lot of other Channels like yours are now stating that the very LOWEST setting if actually 58, not 53. So my question is simply if I know my PD is 49 (or possibly even lower?) - then would you say as an eye specialist, that this automatically makes the Quest 3 a NO-GO for me?

For me I used to wear an old pair of glasses that had a weaker subscription for distance and they broke then I didn't wear them and felt i could see pretty good and the Quest 2 had a little blur but it was more comfortable than wearing my glasses. For some reason maybe the bright screen wearing glasses hurt my eyes. When I got the PSVR2 and Quest 3 i noticed it was hard to see without my glasses. I got two pairs of prescription lenses for both headsets but asked for a little weaker so I can see farther but wouldn't hurt seeing things closer and from the bright screen. My issue now is when looking through the lenses I see clear but if I look at an angle through them it's blurry. I never thought i was supposed to get a base curve but I think that is why. I didn't think lens inserts had a curve but they may.

So many people are talking about this and the optics. In high contrast situations, like white words on a black background, I notice and many others too that there appears to be a "fog or haze" on the lenses. Like an uneven glow. If you move your head in this situation, you can see the fog change or move. Is this normal or are these units defective? I am told this maybe normal for these LCD screens and lenses. But I find that odd it would be. Like the coatings are bad or something? And no this is not fogging from wearing it. It's there all the time.
Any thoughts? And again, lots of people are complaining of this and many want a real answer but we are not getting it from Meta.

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  Před 5 měsíci

Yes.. I notice it as well. I noticed it would the quest 2, but the quest 2 had other distortions that distracted from it. With the quest 3 being clearer that haze/glare seems more noticeable. That can be caused from a few things. It can be the display, could be the lenses... even with the Pancake lenses you will have light scatter and glare. Depending on the person, it can be their own eyes if they have astigmatism not corrected for.

Thanks for this video, it helped (a bit) and background about how the eyes are working with VR. I have the Q2 for years now (using it problem free), but with the new Q3 i just can't use it comfortable. I get eyestrain and dry eyes (now using artificial tears - this increased the comfortable time for more minutes). I tried everything, blinking more, measured IPD, set the glasses spenser as far away as possible (this also improved the comfort a bit), but still after 30 minutes my eyes are hurting. I have no blurry vision, no cyber sicness, no double vision etc. After using the Q3 my vision on short distance seems improved (really sharo), but distance seems to be a bit blurry. I don't now what I still can do. I love the pancake lenses, but the comfort is still far away compared with the Q2. I already changed the britness to low, nightmode but almost no result. I'm really thinking about a refund, but i'm also thinking about prescription lenses with a blue filter, could this improve the situation? I'm now using my own glasses.

Good question! I had one other person email me about the same type of problem. He ended up noticing the device was resting on this cheeks a little more, pulling down his eyelids and drying his eyes out. He just got an updated head strap to pull the device up a little better and said that helped. With your vision being sharper up close and blurry in the distance after you play, I almost wonder if you are experiencing something called 'accommodative spasms". This is where your focusing muscles can get kind of locked in a certain focus... can cause strain and blur at distance. Not sure why you would get this more in the quest 3 though. Have you had your eyes checked recently? I would be curious to hear if they find some hyperopia (farsightedness) or some presbyopia. With these conditions, depending on the person, you can use your focusing muscles and still see great... but can really start to bug your eyes after a little while. Again... not sure why you would experience it more in the quest 3 though. Maybe the true focal distance is a little different than the quest 2 and it's not working well with your eyes? I wish I could be more help... let me know if you figure it out... you have me curious now.

@DrEyeGuy yesterday I went to my local optometrist (he is also a vr enthousiast) and right away he noticed that my ipd settings (measured with the glasses app were wrong). Strangly enough my ipd settings on the quest2 were 6.3, but according the app it should be 6.5. But with 6.5 I get more eyestrain then with 6.3, but my real ipd was 7 to 7.1. My eyes were also a bit dry and the tears are drying out a bit to early. I am farsighted and he also thinks that I have some form of spasms, but nothing to worry about (according to him). He advised my to use a kind of oil tears, which prevent my eye tears from drying out to quickly. First test was okay.. the first time the eyestrain was still there but a bit less, but the left and right eye were noth completely overlapping (i see the 2 rings of the q3). What I now noticed is that my eyes are less dry and when removing the glasses my eyes can adapt easier to close and far sight. Still have to 2 days before I have to refund or keep the vr headset. Any idea if my eyes have to adapt to this new situation?

Hi Doc, I've noticed on Quest 3 that I can see the plastic black rings that surround the lenses in the periphery if I move my eyes to the left or the right. When I then look forward again it causes a slight binocular overlap in front for a second and fades, but remains overlapped in the sides. If I only look straight ahead this doesn't seem noticeable. I have my IPD set at 64 as the app said I'm 64.5. Quest 2 never had this issue for me. The FOV is a bit wider on Q3, but the visible rings put a damper on the wider experience. It has been reported that Meta compromised the binocular overlap on Quest 3 to improve the FOV. There are lists available in online of nearly all HMD's with these statistics.
In my opinion, this was a bad decision. Meta is a data driven company. While the Quest 3 FOV might look good on a spec sheet, the binocular overlap negates that gain in real life use.
