I sold my Power stoke 6.7 diesel at almost 100k miles because I knew a big repair was coming at some point. Though I enjoyed the truck & it towed effortlessly, my 6.2 gasser does what I need & I’m not disappointed.
All that to say…. All of the big three now have very strong and capable gas engines for the three-quarter ton trucks. I agree with your assessment 100%. Great video

I have the 2015 3500hd 6.0. 110k miles, not a single problem! Run royal purple full synthetic. No need for a diesel. I HIGHLY recommend a blackbear tune, about 600 bucks, but it wakes this 6.0 up and way better performance!

Good review Mr. Bolens. Great to hear your comparison between the 6.0L and new 6.6L and ... how a diesel is not necessary unless you work/haul with it for a living and the parts and oil changes are HUGE and when things fail (i.e. injectors, injector pumps, EGR valve, humidity reactions, turbochargers, etc.) and then hoping the diesel fuel you purchase each time is clean of most particulates and free of water. Yep, I like this new 6.6L and other HD gas engines. Simple, naturally aspirated small block with industry 1st direct fuel injection, VVTiming and more. The 6L90 transmission used in the new 6.6 is actually beefed up, with stronger components coming over from the diesel transmission this time; nice 👍🏼. I’ve purchased one of these 6.6 gas units in an LT, and Love It. It’s a Keeper. For near the same price as my new LT, one could buy a new Ford F-150 hybrid XLT (I mention this because some are being marketed to think it can replace an HD), but... it cannot payload or tow or brake as well as a 3/4 ton. And if one plans to keep that hybrid for years beyond warranty (an extended warranty must be HUGE Dollars to cover their butt for that battery system or turbo), one should prepare for turbo repair/replace and then that battery system replacement/repair (did I hear $7-10K? Ouch!!!) = all that fuel savings gone out the window compared to a naturally aspirated Hulk unit like this 6.6L running on regular 87 octane gasoline. PS, I suggest buying branded gasoline you can trust.

I had a diesel pickup for a few years. Yes it pulled well. But he is right the expense was astronomical not to mention the cost of the truck new was 10+ grand more. In 2020 I traded in my diesel for the new 6.6 gas. I pull a 38 ft fifth wheel. Pulls it no problem. Cost is way lower overall. Gas mileage is lower with gas while pulling. And I personally like my new truck well enough that I'm not likely to buy another diesel.

I only have a tacoma, so we will upgrade our tow vehicle (I'll actually keep the tacoma as I use it for off roading in our great jeeping area). Still haven't really decided between the ford or gm products; I've driven both and like them both. We'll definitely do a gasser and low trim to save some $$. The thing I always say is do you tow more then the weight of a skid loader (11k ish with trailer) if yes how far and how often. If you’re using it everyday and going 30 min from home towing 11k go diesel all day, if it’s 3 times a year you haul a gooseneck across state lines I’d go gas. But if you want the power and don’t care about repair cost and know a good diesel shop then by all means do you.

It’s more than likely tuned down for better durability over a longer period of time. That’s usually the case with the HD pickups regardless of the brand. They set them up to last longer rather than make gobs of horsepower and torque. With an aftermarket tune that 6.6 would be an absolute monster compared to the 6.2.

I have a 16 6.0 with 4.10 gears just like your truck. I just rolled over 97k miles today. I have been getting the itch to trade in for a new 6.6 gas, but I can’t find any dealers with any in stock in my area. I specifically want the custom trim level.
Anyways, I’ve been trying to talk myself out of it. Just the added hp and torque on paper is what’s got me interested. But I’ve learned sometimes on paper and in real life are 2 different things. Lol , I don’t think any back yard mechanics are fixing the 6.6 gas or diesel . I have owned both gas and diesel and the diesel absolutely blows the gas out of the water for towing. Maintenance isn’t bad if you do it yourself but it is definitely more expensive. My big hold up with the new 6.6 gas was the front it’s ugly but that doesn’t really matter I guess but a first year gm engine no thanks. With the COVID thing the dealers are trying to make these like they are in demand , any other year thousands of them would rusting away on the lot. I wasn’t getting into the supply and demand thing for a chev truck.

This is what I'm telling people. Unless you tow alot or haul alot a diesel expecialy with the emissions stuff on new diesels it isn't worth it. There having so many issues with the emissions stuff it's killing the engines and making it very ex0ensive to repair. Plus to only be able to get 2 or 3 mpg over gas the cost to run diesel isn't worth it. I will also say this to even though the truck I just bought is a 16 silverado with the 6.0 gas engine I had a 06 gmc duramax the 6.0 I think honestly pulls better than the diesel did. It's alos alot more comfortable.

Probably half to use premium gas in the 6.6

  • @thedesertdwellerfromutah4354

It's a wash performance wise...The 6.0 has 4.10 rear end and the 6.6 a 3.73...GM hobbled that new 6.6 with the 3.73 rear end...6.0 with a 4.10 will do everything that new 6.6 with a 3.73 will do. Might have been a different story had the 6.6 had a 4.10 or a 10 speed transmission but that's not the case...another dumb move by GM. Personally I'll take the 6.0 with the 4.10 anyday over the 6.6 with a 3.73

This is just not true my friend. I have logged over 1milliin miles in 6.0 trucks. Currently still have 2 an 06 with 356k miles 4.10 rear and also a 2016 with roughly 150k miles also a 4.10 rear end.
      I have purchased now 2 6.6 trucks. A 21 gmc and a 22 chev.
The power difference is night and day when towing 10k-15k pounds. I tow hay. A lot of hay. This information is not heresy, this is real world usage of both engines. By no stretch of the imagination can the 4.10 rear make up the difference in horsepower and torque in the 6.6.
I absolutely love the 6.0 by the way and consider it probably one of the most reliable engines gm has ever produced.

@@wesleydean4228 I have a construction company. I have bought Vortec 6.0 V8 trucks with the 4.10 by the Dozen since 2004...I have bought two Silverado's with the new 6.6 Gas V8 with the 3.73 rear end and I won't buy another. The only area that the 6.6 is better in is fuel economy. The difference in towing isn't much different at all. The Vortec 6.0 Trucks will pull just as hard as the 6.6 gas V8. And you can attribute that to them having a 4.10 rear axle ratio Vs the 3.73 in the 6.6.
