  • Our Toyota Tundra lacked adequate payload capacity for our Lance 1985 travel trailer so we decided to upgrade our tow vehicle to a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD. In this video I will show you the truck and what we paid for it.

I have my custom 2500 I pull 10,000 pounds with my fifth wheel.
And I don’t have any problem. The truck is unbelievable strong, and this is 2022 . 5000 miles..
Congratulation hopefully I can see you in any campground 👍👍

Just purchased a 2022 Silverado Custom 2500HD myself last weekend. We’re also replacing our previous 2014 Tundra for low payload reasons. Besides that it was a great truck. Yes there’s a significant improvement in towing stability, and not having to worry about payload. This makes the change worth it as well as having peace of mind every time we tow. Great video and thanks for sharing all your info.

I upgraded from a 2021 Silverado 1500 wt (6 speed transmission 5.3). I bought a 2022 gmc 2500 6.6 duramax. It pulls our wolf pup 17jgbl like a dream. Such a great upgrade for mountain towing

Thanks for the thorough review. We love our 2011 Sierra. It still is an amazing tow vehicle and we haven’t had any mechanical trouble. She just goes in for regular maintenance. We found an extra lockable storage compartment under the middle seat in the front. We wish that we researched wheel well covers as we have rust. Otherwise she is the favourite tow vehicle we’ve had.

I recommend removing the rear seat headrests completely in order to get better rear corner views. Just fold then forward and pull out the chromed supports. Store them elsewhere since you will not need them.

Good review, I lost my 2019 Tundra in July due to an accident. I tow a 8.5x20 enclosed trailer. I always felt the Tundra did OK, but it was nearing its maximum capacity. My journey in finding a truck was almost identical to yours. I have the same truck as yours, except crew cab.
Your comparison between Tundra and the 2500HD is spot on everything, except I felt my brakes were a little on the weak side. My new truck has 6500 miles on it currently, it has been a pleasure to drive towing and empty. My only complaint is the turning radius. Thanks for a great review.

Totally one of your best videos for tech comments I too have been looking for a new tow vehicle and have a great understanding of GVWR and CGVWR etc. Nice job explaining and better yet understanding your self that most RV'rs with their half tons are over weight when they load the RV with all the stuff we all carry ( Like water) Oh, and I am a big Chevy fan anyway. Thanks for your continuing great content.

Just bought the same truck. It is very nice and do need a step to get in. I have the diesel. 28 ft 5th wheel and that truck is a towing beast. Mine came with Z71 floor mats installed. You didn't cover the puck hitch mounting system but it allows for 5th wheel or gooseneck hitches with no added rails etc.

I have a 2013 tundra crewmax 5.7 ltre and we just purchased a 22 Bullet Premier25rkpr. I added the trd sway bar and the 6000 pound timbrens and a brand new WDH. Our trip home from the rvdealer was 140 miles one way and it just happened to be incredibly windy that day. The truck did great as far as power and braking especially because of the slotted rotors I installed on it. But as good as it did i am also considering upgrading to a 3/4 ton vehicle. I just feel that the beefier suspension and increased weight of a 3/4 ton truck will give me a better piece of mind towing long distances.

I am 64 and remember back when I was a kid my father towed with the ford wagon that we had as almost everyone else towed with the family sedan or wagon and trailers weren't crashing all over. I think that the biggest problem now is people don't know how to tow a trailer, what to do in a emergency. People are also going way to fast while towing and pay attention to their phones or other things not the road. Payload is not the problem.

I am claiming membership in the club as well. We moved from tundra tow vehicle to 2020 gmc mid trim, white, gasser. Got the double cab because crew would not fit our garage. Virtually identical to yours but with traditional bucket seats and console, power driver seat, and 20" wheels.. Ours came with the Goodyear tires I am anxious to get rid of.
Drove 100 miles one way to trade the day after quarentine was declared. Have 14k and no problems. It is just a blast to drive.
Have 8k travel trailer and get 8-9 mpg at 65-70 mph ( gy endurance tires). 17ish solo on interstate at 70-75. 12-13 around town. Actually not bad for 3.5 tons and the aerodynamics of a brick.
On the way home from the trade I weighed it bone stock empty at 73xx lbs with me in it and about 30 gallons in the tank.
Mine did not have running boards from factory. Wish I had a video of me and the salesman trying to climb up in it for a test drive. I put step boards on 3 days later.
PS:. On star pushes software updates about every 9 months. I always decline, but when it is pending it will make your retained power feature stop working. You can go into settings, updates, and you have a choice to download or decline. No one is going to mess with my computer's unless it is sitting in a service bay at the dealership.
    Enjoy!

      Yes, good tonneau cover.
      It's called the Deuce 2, I believe.
I have it on my 2006 GMC Sierra 2500hd crew cab diesel and I have the Truxedo Tonneaumate toolbox that fits nicely under the cover and it all works well. I added a second manual lock latch to the right rear of the tonneau cover for additional latching security and it just bolts right in just like the left side. It's a bit more cumbersome to un-latch because of both being independent manual latches but I feel better about it and it helps hold the right rear down better.

I appreciate your fine review. I love how systematically you covered all the features and options, and how frankly you discussed your deal and costs. If you know my channel, you know I love my Chevy van, but a truck might be in my future. My only reservation about the Chevy pickup, petty though it is, is that front grill. I’ll probably wait a few more years and buy the big brother, the GMC version. More pricey, from what I’ve seen, but I like the appearance better. All that aside, I do like your new truck and wish great success with it. Again, thanks for sharing.

I have almost the same identical truck, I did get the 8' bed with spray in liner from GM. I got a few more features inside tho without the Z71 package, Power drivers seat with both front seats heated and a heated leather steering wheel. I'm surprised you didn't get the fog lamps being a Z71, mine came with them plus the cab marker lights. It does have the plow package, which I didn't really need, but if I want to plow someday I'm good to go! Enjoy that new truck as I have mine so far, will be a year in November. Very nice video. I just purchased the 2023 Silverado 2500HD Custom. I came from and traded my 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 3.0L Duramax with 52k miles. It was a fantastic truck but I tow a pressure washing trailer and the weight can be up to 8500lbs with 500 gallons of water. I don't always have that amount but I knew I was really pushing the truck capacity and needed something bigger. I decided to go back to gas as well to avoid having the potential future diesel issues that could come up in the future owning it long term. I'm very happy with the truck.

There is something to be said with a larger engine when towing they can be more efficient as they have more torque and don't have to work as hard to keep the load moving. Also this new 6.6 is a pretty good motor from what I've seen so far my friend has one and he is happy with it.

You picked a great tow vehicle! I bought a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 Crew Cab LTZ regular bed (6' 10") 6.6L gas. I have 25,000 miles and have had no issues. I traded my 2015 F250 6.7L diesel due to the same payload capacity issue, which was actually worse than some new 1/2 ton trucks. My payload capacity is 3,872 lbs. on my Chevy. The Ford's was about only 1,500 lbs. due to an aftermarket 50 gallon fuel tank and the extra weight of the diesel engine and transmission. I also did not want the maintenance of the diesel. I pull a 2019 Rockwood 2608BS (30') very easily with the Chevy gasser. Please note that you have a towing label located on your left front B pillar for your specific truck. My truck rides very smooth even with the Goodyear tires. I too love the Michelins that I had on my Ford. The Chevy has an independent front suspension, which helps for the smooth ride and you do not need to worry about Ford's death wobble. Also, in the event of a collision you do need to take your truck to an aluminum certified shop for repairs as the Fords do. Please note that if you are looking to buy a Cougar fifth wheel stay away from units that have a cable system slide out, especially on a main slide which need a traditional rack and pinion system. I had a 2018 Cougar 26RBI travel trailer where a cable system wall bracket pulled out of the wall! The slide had to be manually pushed in, but could not go in all of the way. This happened at the dealer (not the fault of the dealer). What if this happened in the middle of nowhere? The trailer had to sit at the dealership for another month for repairs. I may go to a fifth wheel too as I have the fifth wheel prep package. I will probably go to a Rockwood. Keystone customer service was terrible, while Rockwood customer service was great. You will love your new Chevy!

Thanks Patrick, Your comment about keeping that truck for a long time hit home for me. I pull my Oliver with a Ford E350 one ton van and love it. We just spent $3100 for a brake job and while that is a lot of money, with 185,000 miles I hope to get another couple years out of it before probably buying my last truck. I am looking at the Ford F250 with the 7.3 gas engine which will probably last until the only thing I will be able to drive is an adult tricycle.

I did this 3 months ago as well. We have a 2021 forest river Salem FSX 179 DBK fully loaded at 3800 pounds without water and I was towing it with a 2020 Toyota Tacoma. I was running into payload issues as well and we had to take two vehicles. So I traded in the Tacoma with a puny 985 pound payload capacity in for a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 3.0 Duramax with 1,785 pound payload. We towed the camper a few times with it and it was night and day difference. Now me, my wife, two kids can all ride in the truck now and I am not worried bout payload anymore. I miss the Tacoma but I DO NOT miss towing the camper with it. Went from 8 mpg towing the camper with the Tacoma, to 14 mpg with the camper, also I see 25-31 mpg without towing.... Best decision ever.

Great review! Congratulations on your new tow vehicle! We have the same truck but with the Duramax, Allison 10-speed and 3.42 rear-end. We ordered it last year (August 2021) and took delivery the 1st weekend of October 2021, but it is a 2022 model (go figure). We opted for the diesel at a time when diesel prices were between regular and premium gasoline prices thinking we would save fuel costs over the Premium fuel our 2017 Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2L engine took. Well, we live in interesting times, that's for sure! Diesel prices went completely through the roof. Oh well.
But! This is a towing monster! Of course, most of our towing is in the mountains in the Four Corners area of the Southwest, and North Texas Cross Timbers Hill Country. Currently, we are getting better fuel mileage than the previous truck commuting (20 to 22 mpg at 75 mph; more when we are running 55 to 65 mph) and significantly better fuel mileage towing (12 to 15 mpg vs 9 to 12 mpg). It's much easier to drive, too, so we arrive at our destination refreshed instead of worn out and ready for an adventure. That's the beauty of the HD trucks: they are so stable towing that it makes driving a breeze.
Enjoy your new truck! We are enjoying ours!
    Safe travels!
    Bob and Dottie.

Your video popped up today probably because I just bought a 2023 Silverado 2500 LT but with a Duramax. I’m coming from a 1999 Silverado 2500 with the 6.0l V8 gas engine. It was/is a phenomenal truck (I kept it) but with 310k miles, it needed a break.
You kinda skimmed over the undercoating you got put on. I hope it wasn’t the black rubberized undercoat. That stuff is notorious for doing more harm than good. It traps water underneath itself and rust grows unchecked. The best option would be a Fluid Film or Crown oil treatment. You need to reapply every so often (yearly or two) but it protects extremely well.

So not all Hubler dealers are the same. I thought I might trade my 18 F150 King Ranch but they were screwing me over on trade numbers and on the price of the truck. The manager drove my Ford and told me “your transmission has a problem from 8 to 10 gear. I said no it does not! I’m a mechanic they think everyone that sits across the desk from them is a complete idiot! They also wouldn’t let up on asking me what I owed on my truck. The payoff on my truck is none of their business. It is my responsibility to payoff the truck not theirs! By this time I made my mind up I wasn’t sowing business with them. I told them my payoff to play the game. Yep they based my trade off my payoff then the manager said that kbb valued my truck incorrectly. Huh it’s awful funny that their used truck was worth more than market value but mine was not! What a waste of my 3 hours. I will never do business with that dealer ever again. And their is way more to their lying that I won’t get into here because I could write a book. So I did like you did and first thing I did was looked at what a Costco member gets for a new truck, they gave me a certificate for $1,000 and it can be combined with my employee discount. Costco told me to go to Champion in Avon, IN so that is where I ordered my 2023 2500. Great experience so far. Oh and they don’t make market adjustments either.
