This is one of my favorite Tim Burton movies
Mine Too.,,.
yeah the only burtonflick i like more is Ed wood
It's definitely one of his best.
Mudkip971 never seen Ed wood, big fish, Frankenweenie, coraline. loved pee wees big adventure as a kid alot and still love it. it's wild and totally hilarious. great story too. Edward scissorhands I was terrified as a kid. the part where he comes out from the dark corner in the attic and creepily walks to the Avon lady. Johnny Depp too awesome in that role. he did it sooo well
+Dylan MacDonald
Tim Burton has nothing to do with Coraline. I thought it was too bit the misconception exists cuz it was directed by the same guy as nightmare before Xmas, Henry Selick
This is an over the top film that is just so entertaining. By far Christopher Walken the best part as the headless horseman and all he does is go" RAWR!" Only Walken can pull that off.
Totally, I feel like people are too critical of this and Mars Attacks. They're obviously meant to be "b-movies" and have fun with what they are.
Yep
I love his "shhh" moment with the twins. Classic stuff.
Mars Attacks isn't entertaining
i wonder if right there and then the horseman wanted to shag her.
You know.......I'm gonna miss Monster Madness. He never even tackled the leftover Toho films.
But other than that!!! It's been an honor watching Monster Madness for 10 years!! You taught me a lot with these horror films!!! And I wish many Halloweens to come once this one is over.
Your long time fan, since you started, MrGojira95.
Would have loved for James to cover the non-Godzilla Toho films. Matango is definitely Monster Madness worthy.
Very wholesome indeed
Fun Fact: The Headless Horseman was played by Ray Park..Darth Maul himself.
Cool they also came out the same year and they both have ian mcdiarmid
@@recommendedforyou2936 Crazy how we have Palpatine, Count Dooku, and Darth Maul all in the same movie. I wish I had gotten to see that in the actual movies.
@@foreignroninl1555 I forgot christopher lee was in sleepy hollow
to me Tim Burton's version of Sleepy Hollow is incredible, i have nothing against the direction the movie took, it had such a menagerie of celebrities, there's no lack of awesomeness.
i think the reason Tim Burton went down that route, is because Disney did Sleepy Hollow such justice, even Tim Burton knew he couldnt top that.
30 down. 1 to go.
I'm crying already.
The end is nigh.
Yep...tomorrow will be the last Monster Madness video :'(
WHAT!? You mean, as in, the last one they do _ever ?_
Cosmic Rogue Calm down. James has said he'll still do Monster Madness for Halloween every year, just not daily anymore.
Just Tim Burton running around his backyard with a camera and some friends.
Watching this now and I cannot help but notice Emperor Palpatine AND Count Dooku are in this movie before their Star Wars prequels. Fun times.
Christopher Walken Headless Horseman looks creepy and awesome.
ziljin the Hessian. 🎃
For an actor who is so well-known for his vocal skills, it was actually pretty awesome to see him completely own a role in which his face has a minimal amount of screen time and where he has no lines (well, except for a roar).
But Ray Park as the (Headless) Horseman was Badass
Sleepy Hollow was basically Tim Burton's tribute to Hammer horror. In that area, I think it succeeds wildly. The atmosphere, production design, dark comedy, suspense, eccentric character types, blood, everything. It truly felt like Hammer had, shall we say, "risen from the grave."
Before the LotR and Star Wars movies, I actually knew Christopher Lee as a former Bond villain rather then a horror star.
Every time I hear "monster madness" I expect to hear "godzillathon".
same, but because thats how i discovered cinemassacre
Wasn't Christopher Lee the dentist in Charlie in the Chocolate Factory? Looks very familiar
J-Mac n' Cheese Yeah, he was. It's kinda sad THAT is what you recognize him from. Just saying.
I never seen star wars :/ hard to find the original movie for me
J-Mac n' Cheese What about the Lord of the Rings? Never saw those? Or the less good Hobbit films?
nope lol....plus that uh troll didn't interest me....ew.
J-Mac n' Cheese Gollum? The one that says precious all the time? Not a troll. But there are trolls.
I like the parallels and differences between James' review of this film and the Nostalgia Critic's review of it. They both see it as a mixed film and not as good as the Disney version, but about a lot of imagery in the film they have very different views on it. Doug sees Christopher Walken's portrayal of the Headless Horseman as silly, while James considers it badass. I, for one, agree with James on that. I guess for me it helped that I've never seen the Disney version, so it wouldn't subsequently spoil this film for me. The atmosphere in it is amazing, and the slightly stilted but dramatic acting gives it a feel like a play, which for me makes it feel older, more classic.
this movie scared the shit outta me when i was a kid
The mother inside the iron maiden fucking traumatized me.
Tricikloplots just like it did to Crane then haha
Me too. I remember being grossed out by the beetle coming out of the guys neck hole. I couldn't watch it then but now it's not such a big deal but still creepy and gross but really good.
Same here. I lived in an apartment complex named Shady Hollow so I was pretty fucking spooked
Disney version: HELL YES!!!
One of my favorite horror movies, the atmosphere and visuals are fantastic!
For Halloween, Modern Monday, I hope he reviews the best modern horror movie of our generation.... Shrek Spooktacular
or pride prejudice and zombies
Colton Allgire no just no
Anyone else wish he'd talk about Van Helsing (2004), even as part of Frankenfridays or something? That movie also had a confusing plot but the visuals were absolutely stunning
Or Stan Helsing. It's awful.
zoli9876 Van Helsing is one of the worst excuses for a monster flick I’ve ever seen. CGI overload, terrible dialogue, a weak plot, and excessive, dumb action scenes. An insult to the Universal monsters made by imbecilic, hack maestro Stephen Sommers.
@@normora877 it's similar to what Alien Resurrection is to the Alien franchise: a fun, over-the-top and cheesy spectacle that doesn't try to be anything more.
BuzzKirill Actually, Van Helsing(2004) was more like the director Stephen Sommers playing with his dolls/action figures, according to the Nostalgia Critic.
Thank you James Rolfe for taking my suggestion. Enjoyed the review. Can't wait to see how you close out what has been perhaps the best Monster Madness yet!
I'd love to hear your take on Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd, even if it's just a one off review.
This is by far one of my favorite Tim Burton movies. I love the gloomy and eerie atmosphere it had.
The disney version is amazing, of course, and I'll happily watch it again and again, but my only gripe with it would be that it's so hard to suspend disbelief enough accept that the Headless Horseman might just be Brom Bones in disguise.
I mean, there's even a shot of Ichabod peering into the collar of the guy and being terrified. You'd think that would be enough to clue him in, if it was just a costume. Also, the horseman is way too slash-happy to make it seem like it was just a prank to scare off Ichabod, instead of outright murdering him. Finally, the outfit is just way too perfect for me to believe it was just a plot that Brom dreamed up at the last minute and hurriedly cobbled together.
Of course, trying to 'fix' any of this stuff would have meant ruining one of the most action-packed scenes in Disney history by watering it down, so I can't really fault them for picking the route they took.
it amazes me how James can do a review in 3-4 mins and i can make a decision on whether to see a movie or not, where others will do a 20-30 min review and still not be able to know if something worth watching. Thanks, James.
Tim Burton's attempt at making a Hammer film, underlined by Christopher Lee being the one who sends Ichabod to Sleepy Hollow is absolutely gorgeous and dripping with atmosphere. It's worth seeing just to appreciate the imagery.
Also, it's my favorite Depp performance. I love how he turns Ichabod into a heroic fraidy-cat, especially his habit of ducking behind anyone else for cover. And at one point he's even using his kid sidekick as a human shield. Oh and Christopher Walken as the Horseman is all the recommendation you need to watch it!
I really get how much you love these movies, you can just sit down and talk calmly about them and I still feel the passion. You started a youtube halloween phenomenon that other channels try to imitate and fail. Great work.
Your visit to Sleepy Hollow video inspired me to make my own visit last Halloween. It was so cool.
Well.... Tomorrow Monster Madness ends on Modern Monday! Any Guesses?
It follows?
Jason X. Not exactly modern but why show the guy on the promo? I hope there's more though.
Gr8 Darklord he Reviewed that with Mike in last year's Monster Madness.
oh
NukeA6 Reviewed the film as Part of a Friday The 13th marathon.
In my opinion the show sleepy hollow is a unique take on the story
Nazo- kage I haven't seen it. I'm considering it though if it's any good.
shadowlinkbds hear is a little snippet about the show, the headless horseman is the horseman of death
pureblackeagle
I can see that, but really it was the best season.
I actually appreciated the different take on the Sleepy Hallow story. The fact of the matter is.. The Legend of Sleepy Hallow is only about two to three pages long. Changing it into this detective story with new elements was a fantastic idea.
The Pickles That's fair, I suppose. Could have just made it a movie series? A trilogy maybe?
Never noticed the wings behind Christopher Lee in the court scene. Awesome little easter egg and thanks for pointing it out.
I immediately thought of Hammer Horror as well when I saw the bright red blood. I always liked this film because it is creepy and spooky but also doesnt take itself too seriously, just like Hammer films. It goes down as my third favorite Tim Burton film, behind Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice.
I always make it a habit of watching this film every Halloween.
"RAAAHHHH!!" -Christopher Walken as The Headless Horseman
Sleepy Hollow: Pure brilliance
I remember seeing this in theatres and thinking, “wow, this is amazing and exactly the type of movie/atmosphere I was hoping for”. Then I read the reviews and couldn’t understand why people didn’t like it. To me this movie is awesome and captures everything amazing about Halloween.
I'm proud to say I've been on this journey with you since the beginning sir! It's been a long strange ride! Here's to the future of Cinemassacre!
he should review the return of the living dead part 2
deezy81 yea :D
"WRONG"
In ten years, Monster Madness will focus not on any particular movie but on Trump's presidency. The scary time where reality yet again surpassed the horrors we could imagine in fiction
***** it was hugeee. (in my opinion, a pretty funny movie)
It was a funny film, in my opinion.
I really enjoy this movie. I actually love how Ichabod is not squeamish at all when it comes to examining dead bodies, but he scares easily and seems quite awkward around the living. Christina Ricci looked very attractive in the film (not that she doesn't in other films). The visuals and set design were excellent. I wish I had a copy so that I could watch it again.
*sigh* I guess this means he won't be covering Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak" from last year. While not a masterpiece, it's still one of those overlooked surprises--beautiful visuals, amazing cinematography, a chilling story that sadly doesn't get interesting until the second half, great performances, but I still wished a lot of the gory effects weren't so CGI'ed. Still it's worth a look, especially in time for Halloween.
If you want to see an epic Christopher Lee performance, you have to watch Howling 2. The scene where he is at the club is phenomenal.
Finally, the one film that I felt was missing from the Monster Madness series gets in just under the wire. Thanks James for giving us your thoughts on Sleepy Hollow.
I remember this movie being freaking awesome. I have to watch it again some day. Nice review by the way. I never stopped to think about it but the LoTR movies and the SW prequels did introduced me and many other youngsters to the awesomeness of Christopher Lee
It's the ultimate Sleepy Hollow for me, easily one of Burton's best.
It was not only 'implied' that Brom was the horseman in the original story. It was HEAVILY implied.
The shattered pumpkin was the big giveaway because the narration before never said anything about the horseman having a pumpkin, but what SEEMED like a severed head. The pumpkin was part of the prank.
The music was great too, especially in the opening credits. Those wideshots and the music just set the mood
I watch this every Halloween as tradition since I was twelve.
This might be my favorite Burton film. Feels like a Hammer classic. It's a beautiful film.
You forgot to mention that after this movie, Christopher Lee became one of Tim Burton's regulars appearing in almost all his films that followed this up until his death in 2015.
The tradition of October reviews is NOT ending altogether, this is just the last one that will be every day.
the score is amazing. danny elfman does it again.
Just saw it yesterday, nice hearing you point out easter eggs I didnt know about.
Love this movie. It just feels perfect. Except for the CGI witch face! However, this is one I would welcome remakes and retakes of.
I still can't believe this movie is 20 years old already. I still enjoy watching it every Halloween.
Love your work James. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I just want to say the scariest part of Monster Madness this year was the the thought of not having it continue. BOO, take that!
I always pictured the wings as an angelic symbol.
Love this film. I wish Burton would make something like this again.
Just one Monster Madness review left, tears of sadness and joy will be shed. Looking forward to whatever James has in store for the final outing.
Flipping through channels at my grandparents house and getting jumpscared by the headless horseman was my introduction to Christopher Walken.
I have this on my halloween viewing list to watch today so it's a fun conincidence you're reviewing it now. I haven't watched it for years.
Loved "Sleepy Hollow", and, for the original story, I think the Disney classic will be very tough to beat. You already have your wish.
I love this film! It's funny yet scary. The dark and overly gothic visuals are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a film.
The headless horseman is the only classic movie monster from the US. I mean it's set the US.
I am surprised considering there is a plethora of American folk monsters that could have become classic monster movies.
The best we can claim is the slasher movie monsters, since they all came from here.
Wasn't italian horror doing simular things before US slashers?
Tom Wilson
Yeah, sorry about that. Though back on topic, I'd pretty much consider a lot of the giallo films slashers, which were done long before halloween or TCM.
There are Wendigos, but I'd struggle to call them classic
Disney's Ichabod is such a nostalgic, creepy trip down memory lane for me! Watched it when I was like 5 or 6 and it's stuck with me ever since.
I did recall enjoying this one when I saw it in a cinema.
Also everything needs Christopher Walken.
Loved how Ray Park did all the action stunt work for the Headless Horseman. That man knows how to use weapons.
I had to watch this film for extra credit in Sophomore English class when we were reading about the classic tale.
And no, we didn’t watch it IN class. I had to rent it from Blockbuster on my own time and take notes about differences between the story and this film.
Love this movie. Great atmosphere and visuals, good acting, unexpected story and an awesome horseman.
I love that Ian mcdiarmid (the emperor) was in it and Christopher lee! Sidious and dooku !
Gosh darnit James! You got Large Marge's face back in my head. DX
Christ I feel so fucking old now. I remember seeing it this in the cinema. 1999! Fucking hell!
its my bday, thank u for the gift cinemassacre :)
Honestly, this was superior story-telling compared to most versions of Sleepy Hollow. It has a richer, deeper tale that makes me wish it was the version people would tell in the future instead of the ones that came prior.
never forget that poster
Splendid film. Plenty of people aren't really fans of Tim Burton, but I would encourage them to watch this movie too. At least once
Fun Fact: Because of the silver retention process used to create that really contrasty image on film, they had to use really bright orange blood to visible. At proper brightness, the color of the blood wouldn't read: it would show up too dark.
I just watched SleepyHollow (1999) - for Halloween 2020 - it's a great Halloween movie - even though they changed so much - great review
One of Burton's best films and such a joy to watch.
One of my favourite movies of all time.
Thanks James. I've been on the fence on watching this one again. I think I'll give it another go tonight.
It's on Netflix BTW!
one of my favourite movies, thanks for including it
That's how I feel about Copolla's Dracula. A chance for a big-budget, faithful adaptation of the novel simply wasted.
P.S: Minor nitpick, but why is Dooku's picture flipped?
LusoTuber i don't think he noticed that when editing
Flipping the image prevents it from being a direct copy of the original image from the movie. Therefore, he can't get in trouble for using it.
Also, he likely just pulled it from the internet.
"I would hang on the wall... if I had more wallspace."
You have a ceiling.
This is actually one of my favourite horror films.
We had Darth Maul as the Horseman, Count Dooku as the judge and The Emperor
This is the second of three films (that I know of) co-starring Michael Gough and Chistopher Lee. And in none of those films do they ever have any scenes together. Also I believe this is the only movie that featured three Star Wars Sith Lords actors (Lee, Ian McDiarmid, and Ray Park). Lastly, I would also like to point out that this is the third classic horror reboot produced by Francis Ford Coppola.
how come these video’s get less views than the avgn episode, it’s always nice to hear james talk about these movies that i grew up with…
You are right about the Hammer Horror connection this film was basically a homage to Hammer.
Good Movie!
We have one more Monster Madness review, end it with a BANG, James!! =)
It's officially past midnight on both coasts. I'm awaiting the finale with tears in my eyes.
I think this is an underrated film. You don't hear it brought up as often as some other Tim Burton movies, but I've always found it thoroughly enjoyable.
Odd that James seems surprised when the face forms on the Horseman and it's Christopher Walken. There's a 5 minute backstory near the beginning of the film where we see Walken quite plainly.
SUPER underrated film, and definitely my 2nd fave Burton film after Ed Wood. Visually it's just gorgeous, like every frame. Its a Film Noir take on a classic horror tale, with sublime colourful gothic visuals, and some kooky humour to boot. Such a great flick.
NOOOOO! Tomorrow marks the end of Monster Madness! I'm super fucking sad.
Thank you James for all of the great videos, we'll all really miss this series which made Halloween that more fun and highly anticipated.
This is one of my all- time favorite movies.
James needed to put in a spoiler warning in regarding who the true villain was.
Speaking of, Miranda Richardson gives an incredible performance when we learn her true colors, easily one of my favorite "WTF!? He/She was the baddie all along?" surprise villains.
Aw man you were in Sleepy Hollow?? Godammit I need to hang around in the cemetery more often XD
I love this movie and the gore, it shouldn't work, but it does and nice a tribute to the Hammer Films.
James, movies are my passion. If it hadn't been for Monster Madness, I wouldn't have found that passion. Thank you
This was Tim Burton's "Hammer" film, just like Batman 89 was his "film Noir"
My favorite Tim Burton movie and my favorite Halloween movie by a LONG SHOT! Perfectly captures the look, feel, and spirit of my favorite holiday.
Love Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Tim Burton has Johnny Depp star in a lot of his films.
I really like Christopher Walken as Gabriel in The Prophecy movies.
It was a loving tribute to Hammer Horror.
