I don't think Frank-N-Furter was a vampire. Emotional vampire, maybe, but not like Dracula.
Aza Smith He is a pansexual alien
Well I know that, but James called him a vampire and an alien.
It's a common mistake, probably brought on by the act that when introduced he's wearing a Dracula cape and looks very pale -- ofcourse it's shown right afterwards that it's just garish make-up.
I think people gain this assumption since he's "from transylvania" and that's usually how it goes.
"Transylvania" is a galaxy in this context.
"It's an insane mess."
Pretty much all the review anyone needs.
Since it has audience participation, I wonder if a rocky horror vr experience could be created. So you can virtually have the crazy experience and with randoms from the internet.
Shit! I would actually love that. ;D
Oh wow yeah, that's a really cool idea!
I don't think a virtual theater by itself would do it justice. You really need the movie on screen and virtual actors who are the crowd. Maybe with 3/4 variations on each character so each viewing would be a bit different. And also allow for multiplayer, so your friends could join in the escapades and throw virtual items.
TheBrabon1 I read that O'Brien doesn't really like the audience participation..
Definitely a chance. Another route for simulating it is Gmod Cinema. Run the film inside the game, have some fitting custom models. Then again, with children run rampant, would possibly ruin that.
"It doesn't matter if you just to watch, somebody's gonna pick you up outta your seat..."
I have a feeling James is speaking from personal experience on this one...
LET'S
DO
THE TIMEWARP
AGAIN
DeFactoLeader It's just a jump to the left,
and then a step to the right.
Put your hand on your hip!
Put your hands on your hips.
You bring your knees in tight.
For me Rocky Horror created punk, especially the English look/scene. The plastic 60s sunglasses, pins all over a leather jacket, crazy colored hair, torn up dusty old suits being hemmed at terrible fits. It's a wild experience, it's more than a movie. It's been one of my favorites since I was 7 and I still love every minute of it.
It's just a jump to the left.
With your hands on your hips!!!
And pull your knees in tight
But it’s the pelvic THRUUUST
That really drives you inSAAANE!
And then a step to the ri-i-i-i-ight.
Get the fuck off the desk!!
Rocky Horror is great. If you never seen it I say the best way to get that midnight showing experience at home is to watch the BBC's Rocky Horror Show Live. Its the live stage play (its the same as the movie just with a extra song). It has the audience reaction's and it makes just makes the show even more funny.
Tim Curry still makes me question my sexuality.
So Antman is in love with Tim Curry, now I've seen everything
StageLined Who isn't?
Hey, it's Tim Curry. You don't have to question it.
Tim Curry is his own existance.
All bow down to that entities voice.
Adrian Fahrenheit Well, our passion for Curry does burn like a pile of sticks.
For a movie in the mid-70S to be so sexually ambigious and "in-your-face" was really something new. But i bet it could still shock some people out there.
John Waters, Divine, Holly Woodlawn, Jackie Curtis, and David Bowie would disagree I think.
Tim Curry is the man.
I can't see the new actor for "It" do a better job.
She didn't. It was horrible. IT took something that was intentionally campy and cheesy, and tried to make it "good". What it turned out to be was an overly produced mess. It's like a parody of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which in itself is a parody of 1960s era horror films. So a parody of a parody.
It was pretty bad, and the new Frank was probably the low point, but I'm not sure that I can blame the actress. It seems like the direction was a mess, and all of the songs were screwed with in such a way that they are barely recognizable. The tone of many characters changed completely; Frank wasn't a creepy psychopath, Columbia wasn't an upbeat high energy pixie, Magenta wasn't the slightest bit strange... Brad and Janet did a good job, and the Riff-Raff was passable. That's as much as I can say for it. They also tried some weird audience framing that they half-assed, and changed the setting to an abandoned theater without really doing anything with it.
WUHEH WUHEH WUHEH WUHEH
I love Tim Curry as the doctor, but I really didn't think that woman did a "bad" job in the new Fox remake. I prefer the original, but I can appreciate them trying to change some things. I mean, in my opinion, some of the other characters were worse in the remake than the woman Doc. Like Rufus was worse in the newer one, and Eddy was almost nothing in the new version. I love the original but I feel that in the new one the woman Doc wasn't the worse part of it.
Plus, that girl from some Nickelodeon shows was Janet in the new Fox version, and seeing a Nickelodeon star half naked was something I relish.
We used to go to the midnight showing when I was younger. It was a complete blast. If you don't participate you are pulled out on stage and made fun of. They used to grab the virgins and bring them up on stage before the movie and give them spankings (not sure if that would fly today). People were dressed up in crazy outfits as well, and if you wore normal clothes they acted like you were the crazy one. If you didn't know what to do at certain times there was always someone to help you out by teaching you. It was complete chaos but a damn good time.
Sounds like a bunch of assholes.
Maybe I'm just a grumpy twat who doesn't know the meaning of fun but it sounds awful.
Pyrochaos saw it a few times in bristol,a few years ago was my last one,you could count the people who didn't dress up on one hand, and o'brien came out at the end to give everyone a wave, the place just erupted.i think it was the last time i took speed....fuck it,it was one of the best nights of my life!
sorry,i meant the live show
You'll only view them as assholes if you're a prude with a closed mind, really. If you go to the event knowing it's just for a laugh and a good time, you'll have fun. You can't be someone who takes shit personally, because believe me, you're gonna be surrounded by people who have no qualms about taking you out of your comfort zone.
At the showings generally the "virgins" are the people who have never been to a showing before. I remember putting them on stage and having them deepthroat bananas. Stuff like that to mess with them, but also to try and get them to loosen up and get with the spirit of it.
I saw this on stage, having never seen the film and I was blown away. The audience participation is fantastic and it makes the show especially if the Narrator is good.
Well said! It's not just a movie, it's an entire experience!
Don't forget the message. Don't dream it. Be it.
It is fun, that is why people love it so much.
Most films are fun. You aren't really saying much.
Fun in a unique way.
No, that is saying a lot. If you go to the theater and see it with audience participation, you will understand.
It's....fun.
Seeing a man dance around in panties isn't my idea of fun, but to each their own.
There's also what we'd today call an "LGBT" theme and message in THIS movie, and I think some consider it a bit more than just "fun" cause of THAT.
What? Frank isn't a vampire.
lol right? vampire lol
No no no no no, vampires twinkle in the sun and love bi-polar chicks.
Hey, Steve! :D
*****
Hey!!
I've noticed him making claims on other videos that are simply not true.... Kinda bums me out since i like his videos but makes me doubt their truthfulness....
I don't think you have to understand the film, just experience it. The music and horror film tributes alone make it so much fun.
What's to get? It's just a fun movie with great songs.
I think that's his point. It's just a fun movie with great songs and yet there is a massive cult following and amateur theater productions and performances all the time.
I think he means that enjoys it for what is it but doesn't understand the following that it has.
Well, there's also what we'd now call an "LGBT" theme and message in THIS movie, and I think some consider it a bit more than "fun" cause of THAT.
James, its like walking into a Forrest, bumping into watch and walking into wonderland. The film is supposed to be as random as hell, lol
I’ve been watching Rocky Horror every year for Halloween since I was 6, I’m now 19 and still absolutely adore the movie.
it's the pelvic thrust
I'd love to see you talk about little shop of horrors sometime . One of my fave ... ( well it's not really horror , but it's got that aspect and style to it in a sense ) horror comedies / musical adaptations . I really want to hear your two cents on the two endings , though !
Quinn he already did little shop a few years ago
Original or 80's remake?
80s
One of the rare times where I liked the remake better.
Bill lupin Agreed
I didn't even realize you had never talked about this movie. It's absolutely one of the best of all time.
I remember going to see this, when I was really young(too young to drive, so I had to get a ride), at the midnight movie. a bunch of us dressed up(i was magenta, and my bff was columbia), and brought water guns, newspaper, lighters, toilet paper, streamers, gloves, etc. if you haven't seen it like that, you should, cause that's what made it so awesome for us, anyway. :)
"It's just a jump to the left..."
Vampire comment aside, I'd really love to see Jame's take on "Shock Treatment" aka "Rocky Horror Picture Show II"
For some reason James going to see the film at midnight during all the craziness seems like my dad going to see it. I mean he would be entertained by the spectacle, but he wouldn't quite get it.
I was in the Naro, VA Rock Horror cast for three years. Amazing movie - love it.
i fucking love this movie and i love how interactive it is, you dont see that kinda shit anymore which makes me sad. we need more interactivity with movies like this.
Was glad to finally see you review this on monster madness it's definitely a unique movie, but i've always loved it. Still haven't ever seen it at a midnight showing, but would love to one of these days.
I had to watch this one to appreciate musicals. I actually hated the genre before that. Gotta thank the movie for opening my mind a bit.
+NukeA6 - I was never a fan of musicals and this movie did not change my mind. I never liked it, but I realize I am in the minority.
In Israel we used to throw rice during the wedding scene, squirt water during the rain scene, and throw shoes when the narrator kept appearing. This was a truly great audience celebration. I'm still in shock and disgusted there will be a TV series to this masterpiece.
Love your show. Sad that this is your last year of movies' reviews.
Aw man, I was hoping to see footage of James doing the Time Warp :(
The Room has to be the best theater experience.
The final WTF Wednesday.
I used to go see this on Saturday nights at midnight in Chicago at a local theater. I used to remember all the callback lines but it’s been years since I’ve gone so I have to relearn a lot before I go back when covid lets up
Throwing slices of bread at the screen for the "toast!" was definitely something to experience!
Last year I worked at a haunted house and we have a projector that plays horror movies and on Halloween we would play Rocky Horror on a loop all night. It was fucking great.
I prefer the stage show to the film, but the cast is outstanding and the majority of the cast came from the original London production. Except Meatloaf, he was in the Roxy production in L.A. They should have let him play Dr. Scott in the film too. I know film is a different medium but I don’t think anyone would question it in this film (as they are related, Eddie and Dr. Scott are played by the same actor on stage). Thankfully we have Tim Curry’s performance caught forever to remind people how wild this was in the 70’s!
Ever seen Shock Treatment? It's made by R.O Brien, it's not as good but just as weird!
Ivosaur shock treatment is horrible... the theater i saw rocky at every fri/sat for 3 years tried playing thay for a bit, like rocky friday and shock treatment Saturday.... i only saw it once.... it was very disappointing
I love the music from Shock Treatment, and listen to the soundtrack all of the time, but the movie was a mess. I still enjoy it, but I wouldn't say it is as well put together as Rocky Horror.
agree, phantom of the paradise is more like rocky horror than shock treatment oddly enough.
Same director, too.
I love Shock Treatment it had great songs particularly the title song.
Tim Curry was the voice of Skullmaster in the cartoon Mighty Max in the 90s. He also played the hotel manager in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
I always make it a point to watch it every year around halloween! several of my friends have been involved in that 'shadowcast' thing so I've always wanted to try out for it one of these days! sounds like a really fun time.
This Weekend in Montréal!!! It's gonna be exactly what he said : a live performance with the movie as the backdrop!
Scuud52
I was hoping either this or Andy Warhol's Frankenstein would be included on Franken-Friday, here's hoping we got reviews for both now!
I love this Movie! the music is freaking fantastic and there's nothing cooler than dressing up and go to one of the screenings and have all audience participation.
... so let's do the time warp again :-)
Got the soundtrack on cd in my truck. Makes for an interesting drive in to work during the early morning.
Thinking back to my time on a cast, I've been Betty, Ralph, the Criminologist, Dr. Scott, Rocky, and Riff. As for the nights when our roles were from a grab bag, I can't remember who I was
Well done! .. . now how bout doing Phantom of the Paradise?
I get a kick out of the way you say "WTF Wednesdays" every time James. Keep up the work I love Cinemassacre I think you guys are awesome.
The heckling notes the writer of the film wrote as a companion is fun to shout in theatres.
Fun fact: Richard O'Brien, one of the co-writers for the movie and the creator of the show, actually hates the audience participation.
I'm so glad you respect this movie James, I was so excited to see you review this and I'm glad you didn't shit all over one of my favorites
In 1981 there was a spin-off of Rocky Horror known as Shock Treatment.
When I was going to see "Hardcore Henry" in theaters, Rocky Horror was being played next to us, and people dressed in costumes.
Anthony Stewart Head (Rupert Giles from Buffy) performed as Frank -N-Furter in a British stage production of Rocky Horror. It should still be up on CZcams if anyone cares to check it out.
I got a great special edition box set that came with rubber gloves, fishnets and all sorts of weird stuff
How is no one talking about the witch hat in the background looking like its on James' head. Great camera positioning.
I expected this but outside of MM, what a wonderful surprise! THANK YOU for reviewing it, I love this movie to death!
I watch Rocky Horror Picture Show every Halloween it's kind of my tradition
I've actually never seen it. I wondered what it was all about with people dressing up & stuff.
Great explanation!
I love RHPS. I was a stand-in Transylvanian a couple times for a local RHPS troupe back in college.
They did this show at Binghamton University when the Fall semester starts. This is where I learned the real show comes from the audience.
Thank god, he didn't bring up the recent piece of shit remake! /:|
....what.... they remade RHPS....
please tell me you're lying. i don't want to believe it.
Calvin Lee it true
i'm so sad.
The Ramake respect the traditions, and legacy then most of the people who claim to have seen it do. It even gota theater audience it cuts to every now and again so you get to see what james explains. Dressed up people, making jokes together, dancing all 100% tradition.
if you don't atleast appreciate the Remake, you yourself don't appreciate the legacy cause its far more about that then it is the rocky itself.
I'm talking about The One on FOX with Victoria Justice And Laverne Cox!
And now they're gonna ruin it with a remake :D
The remake ruined nothing. The remake is its own separate entity that doesn't replace or spoil the original movie in any way.
Yeah but now it's gonna be Rocky Horror 1975 or 2017. like now it's ghostbusters 1984 or 2016. Wish they'd leave shit alone
Lord V1LE
No it's not, because unlike Ghostbusters unwisely didn't do, the new movie has a subtitle.
Man In Magenta Wig
Didn't they add answer the call to the end of ghostbusters eventually?
Lord V1LE
It looks like it did, yeah.
Dammit, James, I like this video.
Here's the like to prove that I'm no joker.
There's three ways that CZcams videos can go
That's good, bad, or mediocre.
Oh, J-A-M-E-S I like it so.
Oh it's nicer than Mike Matei had!
Oh James-
Now we're subscribed and I'm so glad!
Oh James-
I'm surprised you of all people didn't notice how much it spoofs EdbWood fims. Oh, well, awesome review!
*Ed Wood
I think he did. He even mentioned Plan 9.
I think he said he liked Plan 9 as a cult film, he didn't mention it as one of the influences.
Damn, no Bad Taste review? Been waiting for you to review that forever
Nice of you to save "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" for the last season of Monster Madness.
Of course, you also have the writer, Richard O'Brien, starring in it as Riff-Raff. O'Brien also starred in another cult film - Flash Gordon (1980).
I vaguely remember some ads with people saying "Who the hell is Barry Bostwick?" ...or do I have the wrong actor for those ads?
I still haven't been to one of the "live" shows yet, despite it having showings all the time in MN, but someday for sure.
I love Rocky Horror. People say Rocky my assumption is rocky horror picture show. We still have midnight showings around here and I try to go at least once a year. I own the dvd and vhs tape.
Its awesome
Cool reviews James. Have you done the Tremors series yet?
I'm still hoping that Nightbreed, Freaked or maybe Lair Of The White Worm will get reviewed sometime.
I love this movie and even went to a stage show. It really is something to experience in person. =)
I was still at school when i rented this movie. i remember i had to watch it in the front room with my very strict parents. Only when i got older i understood why all the funny looks my parents gave me.
One of my favourite movies ever getting the Monster Madness treatment! I love it!
Yes! I've been waiting many a monster madness for a review of Rocky Horror!
Will AVGN season 9 be back in stock on Amazon
I have seen the stage show and it was awesome. I met the Riff Raff actor.
You couldn't have picked a better film for the last Wednesday of this month!
James, please do a review of what we do in the shadows
The sequel Shock Treatment is quite underrated as well
Ahman! I absolutely love this movie! Wife hates it though. Great vid!
James & Mike, Have you seen The Phantom of the Paradise (1974)??? And if so, have you ever talked about it in MonsterMadness??? I would love to hear your thoughts on that one, is somewhere between Phantom of the Opera and Faust. A hidden vintage Rock & Roll gem from the master Brian De Palma.
Now James you set my dreams of you reviewing ROCKY HORROR SHOW now can you do the remake!!!
Holy shit added 4 seconds ago?! Nice!
My friends and I are all going to see this show at Chunky's Cinema Pub the day after tomorrow, and we're all dressing up. I'm going as Eddie, who is played by Meatloaf in the movie. I even learned the whole song he sings in preparation.
The Time Warp was the best. Featuring cameos from the likes of Dame Edna, Yasser Arafat and Dr Evil.
I'm high, and can't imagine sitting in that theater with everyone just suddenly standing up
Funny, I have just been watching RHPS clips on CZcams.
Alright I admit a good choice for wtf Weds but I was hoping for "Attack of the killer tomato's" maybe Saturday or Sunday
Did the midnight screening a couple nights ago, and by far the best theater experience I've ever had. Highly recommend going if you can find anywhere doing it. Besides, we need more virgins in the seats >:)
1:30 Oh, SWEET CHRISTMAS!!! Tim Curry is staring into my soul! He knows my name!
wish we had midnight movies over here too
I don't know, when I watched it on TV, it made sense to me and I liked it. Tim Curry is like the star in the center of a solar system in that movie, he owns every second he's on screen.
yESS! my favourite musical ever. thank you for reviewing it
i never understood the way frank made rocky in the tank til i saw hammer's version of frankenstein.
Now do Phantom of the Paradise. I always thought It'd be great to have a midnight double bill with Phantom of the Paradise followed by the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I went to high school with a guy who got married IRL during the wedding scene. Crazy stuff.
I was hoping you would talk about this movie
