  • For a few years now, Kia has steadily been improving its line-up all the way from the entry level compact car all the way to the top-of-the-line Cadenza. The Optima is Kia's mid-sized sedan entry set to take on cars like the Ford Taurus, Chrysler 200, Honda Accord, and Toyota Camry. The 2014 Kia Optima has 2 engine choices, tons of options, and some seriously great styling. The Optima has 5 different trim levels ranging in price from $21,500 to $36,300.
    Find Out More on the 2014 Kia Optima
    www.autobytel.c...
    On the outside the Optima has some subtle styling compared to its sister car the Hyundai Sonata. But make no mistake; in a segment where every car looks like another, Kia does a nice job of separating the Optima from the rest of the pack. The headlights look great as does the strong shoulder line. The blacked-out room looks good on almost every paint color and out back the Optima has neat taillights that blend the meeting of angles.
    You have 2 options when it comes to engines. The base is a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine making 192 HP and 181 lb-ft of torque. The more exciting engine which is on this car tested here is a 2.0 liter Turbocharged GDi engine that makes 274 HP and 269 lb-ft. of torque. The transmission is a 6-speed automatic with fuel economy numbers checking in at 20 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway.

    I tried 2013 in TX Style equipment which is top package here in Croatia. Unfortunately they offer it only with 1.7 diesel engine that develops 136BHP. And the price here is ridiculously huge... Almost $50G for that car I tried... But that's Croatia...
    I read here you all complain it looks nice but it's still a Kia... Ok, here in Croatia we have a joke that Kia is a car for life, because you can't get rid of it when you want to sell it. But I witnessed a testimony from a guy that owns a towing service for 30 years and he said he towed anything you can imagine. All premium brands regardless to the price... But he never ever towed a Kia or a Hyundai :) Hard to believe but the guy is legit.

    • @marksimon94
      @marksimon94 Před 10 lety

      Mr Cloud Hey Mr Cloud. Yes, I tried top trim with auto transmission and metallic paint. It's $50G almost in a cent. Lower trims have pretty sh*** interior.
      I am well aware about premium brand prices with similar trims.
      And am also well aware of US/EU price differences. Was just expressing my frustration about it. Specially if we talk about prices in Croatia. Even compared with Germany. And we're talking about 50G top trim with weak engine. Another thing... Germany already offers Optima with new interior. Croatia still doesn't. I'm not interested in importing a used car. I have my reasons :)

    • @marksimon94
      @marksimon94 Před 10 lety

      I know Optima was face lifted with 2014 model. Both out and inside. I wasn't to Kia showroom since I tried 2013 Optima, but Croatian Kia website still has pictures of 2013 model, so I assume they are still offering it. unlike the German web site that has 2014 facelift...
      Ok, we're "bringing" the cars in, not importing. Big deal... either way it's still a rip off.
      As I said, I tried 1.7, not enough torque for me, but hey, what's the point of discussing about taste. Right? Take care man :)

    Pretty good gas mileage/horsepower-acceleration ratio. The biggest turnoff for me personally is that he said the steering is basically sloppy. I don't like that. I like very direct steering and not pansy-boy boat riding. The steering wheel and the stick shift(if you use it) are absolutely must-have's for people who love to drive.

    Son has a Sonata . The only trouble he had was the push button start , The car gets 34 mpg with the AC on 70-75 mph .For the money its the best bang for the buck.
    Road noise is a little high with the larger tires .The ride is sharp all around a winner
    Looking to buy one in 2 years or less . .Optima would be my choice .The Turbo makes it more sporty to drive but the insurance on turbo cars can be a increase . Any thing over 200 HP . The basic engine would be fine . Its got enough power to ride the highways.

    I'm not a fan of any of the visual changes they made. The 2011-13 had a classy look about it. Jag-like. The 2014 looks like it's subtly trying to look sportier. To me it's just less attractive. I don't like the refreshed rear or front facia. The only visual change I DO like is the quilted leather. Wish they offered that with the cloth too. I hate leather.

    • @ATRichard
      @ATRichard Před 10 lety

      I agree with everything you've said in your comment except for the leather. I don't like that either, nor am I a fan of the new rectangular fog lights especially with those black "wings" jetting up over them. At least if you don't get the SXL model like in this video, you get regular looking leather.

    The ONLY thing i don't like about the new Optima is that turbo badging by the side front fender. I'd say get rid of that. But it's a great looking car with the power to match. It has a more boxy look compared to the 2012 model I have. But definitely looks more aggressive and sexy. Would I trade in my 2012 for the 2014 SX Limited? Hells to the yeah!!!!

    • @noahhamdan5553
      @noahhamdan5553 Před 9 lety

      Well I have the sxl turbo and the ride is very smooth and does very well with bumps. And the the noise on the KIA turbo is quiet but once you really step on the peddle the turbo kicks in and it becomes a Diffrent car. But if I was you I would really take a turbo it is well worth it.

    • @bradh716
      @bradh716 Před 9 lety

      Noah Hamdan I appreciate that. I am trying to stay within a certain budget, which is why I am looking at the non-turbo. And I am actually looking at used to stay within my budget. I am getting a bit frustrated that I haven't found a comfortable car with not much road noise, and that isn't dreadfully slow that is within my budget. Thanks for your reply.

    • @caveman175
      @caveman175 Před 10 lety

      I have an EX Turbo + 2013. I have a heavy foot and normally get 27mpg and sometimes as low as 23. Using Eco mode and actually doing the speed limit or less, driving with the attempt to use the least amount of gas; up to 43mpg. No lies. That high. I do have a K&N filter installed which helped the fuel economy, but with this car, there are extremes to the fuel usage due to the way you drive it. My guess it that you drive in traffic often in cities for you to get 19mpg. If not, I would mention that to your dealer or mechanic to see if that's normal. To me that's very low.

    • @dbsshadow
      @dbsshadow Před 10 lety

      Maybe I'm doing something wrong in converting. My car reads in Liters burned per 100KM which I usually burn 7.5L to 10L. That's on highway with aftermarket intake and 91 octane gasoline.
      If I converted it right, I'm glad to hear that's good considering my foot don't leave the floor!

    37K screw that. At least the roof isn't sloped as badly as the Sonata so 2nd row head access is decent. 25.x MPG Combined isn't bad on the Turbo. Watch out for the insurance rates BTW.
    I'd still get the Accord over this. That 10yr. warranty better be followed with a on time maintenance history per the owners manual otherwise a dealer can deny your warranty claim.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum Před 10 lety +2

      D Koster Not true. If you read your manual thoroughly, you'll see that if you don't have maintenance documentation, Kia can deny any warranty claim (let's say your engine fails prematurely) because there is no proof you maintained it properly. If something major should happen to fail, say your engine, and you don't have oil change receipts, you're SOL if they question the maintenance history. They can easily say "Sorry, we think you abused or neglected the car." and show you the door.

      Especially if this maintenance wasn't performed at a Kia dealership.
      The dealership isn't going to side with you if the manufacture isn't going to reimburse the dealership for the warranty work.

      well keep in mind that is top trim absolutely speced out . you can get most of the features people care about for about 28-30k . and every manufacture is making one of these around this price . its how kia basically sells you a luxury car for sub luxury price . at these prices you could get an entry level acura , audi , lincoln ,or other luxury brand but itll come with a similar if not weaker choice of engine . and less features so the value isnt all that bad .

    • @asteiner9181
      @asteiner9181 Před 10 lety

      I suppose you have a point,It is a very good value car.Hard to justify those prices because people are not use to paying that much for a Kia especially with the current economy.

    • @poplepo3
      @poplepo3 Před 10 lety

      A Stiener this is a very true statement . And it just comes down in the end . To if the buyer is a person who's looking for the best value for there dollar . Or if there one who Is willing to spend a little more for the prestige of buying a luxery brand . Nothing is wrong with either . And honestly it's hard to think of a car as being a entry luxery class car in specs sitting next to a 12k Kia Rio . But in these last year's Kia and hundai have come a giant step forward and I'm starting to think there worth every penny which is more than I can say about a lot of brands lately .

      1. Electrical whine coming from all 4 fan settings. Tried all blend settings/positions and even removed cabin air filter to no change.
      2. Ignition starter: unusual delay before vehicle actually starts after turning the key - dealer said it was abnormal and that none of their cars on the lot do that.
      3. Driver's seat is bunching or creasing - either the fabric or cushion material is improperly installed or of poor quality.
      4. Excessive wind and whistling noises around windows (when closed) at medium and highway speeds.
      5. Transmission gearing is poor - power is weak, likely related to poor shift points.
      6. Brakes are "squishy" (may need bleeding) and feel inadequate and somewhat unsafe.
      7. Steering "selection" = sport, comfort, normal - produce no differences in vehicle responsiveness.
      8. General understeer - steering is generally unresponsive or minimally responsive, requiring too much driver input = unsafe.
      9. Visibility is poor - large pillars and less glass than previous models = poor, unsafe viewing "windows".

      I'm happy with mine. I could likely find the same thing for any other comparable car. Not really scientific when you just copy stuff from somewhere. How much are you getting paid to slag the car?

    Not everyone wants Audi road feel in the steering. Some of us don't mind a slightly numb steering feel. If I wanted Audi steering feeling then I think I would buy an Audi.

    • @mikerules666

      ngb802 I just went to several websites and did some comparison. The 2012 Honda accord resale value is $18,500 and the Kia Optima is $18,400. One hundred dollars, where I come from, is NOT a lot of money and does not give a tremendous advantage to the Honda. Kia and Hyundai have vastly improved on their quality and are neck and neck with ANY Japanese car manufacturer.

      Please back up you "pos kia" statement with something worthwhile. Maybe do a side by side comparison (including resale values) with other brands and see if u have anything besides "well... because it's a kia." Grandparents are a good source of info but sometimes you have to do some research and update your knowledge about what's going on around you. Things do change. Kias and Hyundais today are just as good or better than Hondas, way more reliable than nissans and way better looking than toyotas.
