Use minimum force, stay with the enemy, know your ideal range.
Fist-fight, sword duel, or a whole front of a modern war, some ideas can be applied across the board.

If a principle is sound, then it is probably applicable in more than one situation. Here I discuss three principles that I consider to be widely applicable in conflict: use the minimum force necessary to do the job; stay in contact with the enemy; know your ideal range and stick to it.

1) Don't grip it too tightly
2) Make lots of contact
3) Be aware of length
Without the context, it sounds so wrong ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Thank you for explaining the joke to us.

Are we speaking here of the amour? Because if so, those points all apply perfectly.

Put this on my wall
Ah yes the secret combo
Still one of my favorite Lindy quotes to this day
My master taught me 3 similar rules for any fight;
1) Gather your chi energy.
2) Prepare your mind.
3) Run away and leave your loved ones behind.
The best rule of street fighting is, don't. Remember your tongue is your first line of defence. If that works you've saved energy. If it doesn't then run. If you've managed to baffle your possible opponent you'll get a headstart.

"roll, roll, stagger, stagger, fall, stagger, roll, roll, or was it stagger ?"
-Yellowbeard, a long time ago
Kyle A I laughed so hard when he said that it's his new one liner
Summary:
1) Use as much or as little energy as needed
2) Stay in contact with the enemy
3) Get into your ideal range, and try to keep your enemy out of theirs
1) get suplexed while trying wimpy takedown
2) get punched in the face while doing wing chun
3) be a fish that tries to flop back to the water

this is like a western version of the art of war by lindybeige
Tristin Roberts art of war is a tad longer
The thing is, you aren’t wrong, because every single situation he speaks of in this video can be extrapolated to a greater conflict. He is speaking about physical fighting but each fight and action he’s speaking about can also be thought of as arguments or tactics in an argument or military maneuver. Lindy continues to impress me.

I begin my original song: "Tank", with a tiny electric piano intro, followed by a slow drawing of my katana from its scabbard. It's very effective for setting a mood.
I can't wait for the day when the news headline says "Man stops robber in home with Long Sword! robber in critical condition!"

@Deborah Meltrozo Probably not, if the intruder was armed. However, anyone who charges a man holding a sword is an idiot. They aren't going to win. Unless they've got a spear.

I have to say, I love your videos and not just for the content. I really admire how you present your videos in one long take with all uhs, ums, and side thoughts included. It feels more natural and it's like having a conversation with you.

My rules of combat are
1) Don't get killed
2) Don't get injured
3) Try to win if you can do so while following rules #1 & 2.
rule 1. get the fuck out of there
2. hopehedosent follow
Instructions unclear, invaded minimum amount of countries necessary
Asimovdo never caught on despite it's effectiveness, as it was really, really boring.
LordArion
what are you? rome?
shananagans5 in modern combat, you are very likely to get injured. you just need to make sure it doesnt kill you. besides, when you go off to the hospital, you are no longer on the front in the line of fire, so you are more likely to survive
I would propose three different general principles of combat:
1) Conserve energy. (Physical combat is exhausting. Your "use minimum force" can overlap with this.)
2) Stay calm. (Contrary to the myth of "desperate people fight better," deliberate actions usually trump blind rage or terror.)
3) Anticipate. (This is the greatest asset of experience. And I'm not really talking about intuition; essentially, anticipation is an ad hoc exercise in calculating probabilities.)
One more...don't be afraid of death.
1. Take the initiative
2. Retain the initiative
Good manners got me out of so many situations that could have ended in fights. And even when it ended in fights anyway, it incited people to join on my side. Truly the most underrated technique :)
Yeh but imagine the girls you get from literally punching a punch out of the way.
Hamish Kane "wow that's a real cool punch! What's it called"

Rory More yo dawg I heard you liked punches
lmao
As compared to effortlessly defeating an opponent?
punching a punch back to whence it came from.
or better yet!
_headbutting_ a punch, back to whence it came from. @.@
Do you think these could be applied to verbal conflicts too? Minimal force: if you can effortlessly deal with what people say to you, without bellowing at them, you are the more mature person. Stay in contact: slightly less applicable but if you are debating with someone and respond to their arguments rather than dancing round the topics then you will be more effective. Know your ideal range: don't get too personal, don't drop needlessly into ad hominems. Good laws for debates too it seems.
Minimal force: don't present all your arguments at once. Stay in contact: listen to your opponents arguments. Know your ideal range: argue based on things you know.
Hamish Woodland well debates are fights. but moving around the topic is just footwork
Hamish Woodland if you want to win the audience then minimal forces and maximum intellect are the way to go.
id probably put the getting too personal thing into the first cetegory where you should not go all out ..but have the least amount of neccessary backgroudn inf oabout your opponent as necesarry to use against him
and range id say would be the vocabulary you use
you are not going to discuss somethign with a foreigner who barely speaks the language .. or a child with words that are .. out of his/ her range.. you should use the right kidn of words that fit this situation the most
kinda..
eh?^^

Some people, myself included, raise their voices when passionate. It by no means allows you to infer the maturity of the other person. Instead, it simply allows you the ability to manipulate the other person's fervor for malicious purposes.
Just a note, but some treatises do specifically tell you which edge (both front and back) to use in defensive actions. The only treatises that expressly describe using the flat of the blade to defend are for the langes messer and they specifically have a 'nagel' at the side of the guard to make that more practical.
(European treatises, that is)
Do you watch his videos waiting for him to get sidetracked? Love your channel btw
That annoyed me about the Mythbusters episode where they tried to cut a sword with a sword. They insisted that it MUST be edge to flat, because you NEVER block or parry with the edge.
I love how u casually just pulled out a sword
When a new lindybeige video pops up in your feed and it makes your day
I often say, as the movie character gets the pistol taken away, “when you have a distance weapon, keep your distance.” People seem to like closing the gap to point guns, but it’s the only way to lose.

There is one principle in combat : don't die.
their is three good way to do that.strike frist, Hit and hit hard. after all a knocked out or died enemy wount kill you.
From a soldier's perspective? there are three: 1. don't get hurt in any way, 2. don't kill anyone, 3. get as much money/fame/stuff/raping as possible
+jeremiaas15
"don't kill anyone"
"get as much [...] raping as possible"
Mixed up priorities much?
Not really, killing someone is rather deeply rooted as the ultimate crime in most cultures, plus, its effect is immediately apparent- there's a corpse. The effects of rape, such as mental trauma or pregnancy usually occur after the army has moved on, so as far as the soldiers are concerned, they're fictional.
A screaming, crying woman is a pretty immediate effect.
Ive recently revisited your channel after a pause. I'm finding you as informative and entertaining as ever, but Im really enjoying your beautifully clear diction this time, too.

Max Cheng same. instant wt recognition :)
Will this "technique" be in ANY use in real fistfight? Against, lets say, boxing technique?
Unacceptable yes. and it works quite well,if practiced enough. as many techniques it requires a looot of training to master, but then it it superior to simple boxing. but since like...only 1 or 2 percent of people who "know martial arts" train enough, in 99% of all fight i think boxing will be more effective. because simpler. but my wtsung teacher... i could not fucking hit that guy, and i tried for real. for like 2 minutes.

You got really good oratory skills. Keeping me engaged even throughout the sponsorship is a feat few youtubers actually manage.
A good application of the second rule.
I can only think of one exception from the rules, and that's again the second one - I do believe there can be an advantage to releasing contact, especially in ranged battles or war.
But then, ideally, you'd want to have some reconnaissance in place (contact?)
It's also possible that your enemy watches Lindybeige and decides to pursue you, not letting you do _your_ disengagement maneuver and hole up deeper in your territory.
Well Lloyd, I'm glad you cleared that up about the edge parry video, thought I did waste all that effort I put into the response video now!
The only CZcams channel that I look forward to hearing about the sponsers.
I wish someone would ‘flick’ me like that in the middle of a fight lol I would probably pause to appreciate their effort.
Stay calm, don’t get lost in your emotions, and ‘focus’ on breathing. The main reason you don’t want to blow your load right out of the gate is because you don’t want to get winded 15 seconds into a fight (like most people do) But you’re definitely going to need to put some force and effort into a fight if you want to win a fight, esp if the other guy wants to win. And don’t ever quit.. the moment you let up, you lose control. Even if you think you’re losing, don’t give in, show that motherfucker you aren’t playing around, because chances are he’s on the verge of letting up too.
Glad to see another video by you.
I have would quite liked it if you had produced this as a trilogy so as to allow you to include more historical examples like the battle of Juttland.
I like the way you Inform, it's interesting and makes it more fun to listen to
Wait, Im confused. When do I throw the pommel at them?
You throw the pommel when the berserkers shoot the fire arrows from they're Spandau's....... duh.
At the count of 3, being the 3rd number, be reached, throwest thou thy pommel at him, who, being not in my sight, shall snuffeth. Amen.
If you gain the advantage in a fight then you must END THEM RIGHTLY!
When you dont have the time to play with the rest of the sword
not if you're a Giant-sized character, I guess. Ettin, Iron Golem, definitely Fire Giant, some older Elementals maybe?
Lindy, the "chi" in chi sau is not energy, it's for adherence. The character for energy ("hei" in cantonese) is officially romanized as Qi. It's subtle, but there's a difference in the pronunciation and a huge difference in meaning. So chi sau really is the concept of adhering hands (or arms). Love your videos, cheers!
This even applies to intermediate assault rifle cartridges and why they were adopted instead of full power rifles. Great way to put it.
I entirely forgot you had martial arts training until I saw how you were showing to move and fistfight. I imagine that training is what inspired and taught you many of these points and details.
watching loyds calming and entertaining vids in the night, then that f****** sound effect at 0:21 gave me a jumpscare strainght from hell -.-
argh, and others followed ...
i been waiting for this vid for like ever love your channel and the way you think 👍💝
I really really enjoyed the part about ideal range, the whole conceptual side of combat is so interesting to me especially when applied to games that I like such as World of Tanks, and I spend a lot of time thinking about this kind of stuff, such as exactly when it's appropriate to 'close the distance' and when it's a better idea to KEEP the distance, as there are always times that people will want to do one of those to have their own advantage.
Your personality carries this channel. Cheers from Texas!
My one problem... at least with applying the least amount of force necessarily... is that you rarely know EXACTLY what the enemy is going to do or how they are going to do it, especially initially. Also, it is a defensive tactic. Hear me out: When attacking something, no matter what it is (i.e. fist fight/army/sword-fight) using more force can be a better guarantee of success. Of course, as with your rule, it is entirely situational. The atomic bombs were used in WW2 with excessive force to guarantee a surrender. Now, taken into account with your second rule, the first rule does make sense... except the fact that you are giving away the initiative to your enemy. I'm going to run out of room here, but would love to talk about it more. Anyways some parting advice from someone wiser then I. "Know your enemy and know yourself, and you always win. Know yourself, but not the enemy, and you will win roughly half the time. Know neither yourself or your enemy, and you will always lose." - Sun Tzu
Good point. My issue with most martial arts taught is that the techniques require you to know how you are being attacked and what you are being attacked with. in most cases (assuming your opponent can fight) by the time you see the punch, its hit you.
Message me! I’d be down to debate some of whatever you would call what you’re wanting to discuss.
@Andrew Collins hello necro. It's been 5 years. 5. Years. I barely remember this video or what it talked about. The gist of what I said, though, is that you must assume that your enemy is capable and use the amount of force needed to quell them at their best. If they aren't at their best, it will be seen as overkill. But you can't assume your enemy will make a mistake.
So ... "don't bring a sword to a pommel fight" isn't one of these?
Enjoyed the logic. Minimum force is absolutely the best avenue of approach. Even the community of the quiet professionals, utilize such practice, by turning the force of their enemies against their own selves. Who can know Lindy... just how many all out wars these professionals have curtailed? "You're Best fight, is the one that never happened."
-Former Recondo Sgt. 82nd Abn. 1/504 Inf.
One of the best videos I've ever seen on CZcams!
Has LIndy done any significant amount of actual real fights in his life?
In my experience, the first thing you must learn in a fight is to remain calm, but that can only be achieved if you were used to the adrenaline rush of brawling. All the techniques in the world won't help you if you're too freaked out to remember them. Our bodies panic as they are much better suited to simply running away. You basically have to "hack" your flight reflex.
Muscle memory, you don't need to "think" about the movements because you've practised them so many times your body remembers them.
In fairness his videos show that he's quite an enthusiastic re-enactor so some experience. The flight or fight and (Corporal Jones-esque) "Don't Panic! Don't Panic" doesn't really make a great topic. Yoriko is right with muscle memory -you can see this in his fighting moves in the video - obviously practiced. The military trains and trains to de-sensitize troops and imprint them with "muscle memory" in terms of training - how to react to incoming fire, how to move under fire, section and platoon attack drills - drill being the operative word.
GIven the number of fights that occur among people everyday, I call bullshit. Also, I'm not by any means a trained fighter, but I've been in a few fights - never run from any of them. I generally got the shit beat out of me, but running doesn't occur to me when I'm already mad enough to be in a fight to begin with. The adrenaline just feeds that fire.
Also also, the human body in NO way 'better suited to running away.' We can't run for shit compared to MOST animals even, and a single punch can quite literally knock out a human being. We run mostly when we're STARTLED, not when some guy says' Yo Um gunna fyte u.'
There are tribes that still exist today that hunts by running after their prey until it's too tired to stand, then they finish it. Our ability to cross large distances on limited food and water is originally the reason how we've come to be so spread out across the earth originating from Africa.
Endurance is mankinds primary physical trait that has lead to our success.
Yokiro because superior tool crafting had NOTHING to do with it, eh? We aren't even CLOSE to having 'great' endurance. There are also people in this world who lift cars and eat metal. Lifting cars and eating metal didn't pull us out of the stone age - our evolved brains did.
as soon as i saw him doing the first 'move', i knew, hes done some karate...
Its kung fu he did, Kung fu is different from karate :P
Wing Chun to be exact
+Kai Tsuba His first move was the over-commited blocking and punching. The moveset itself actually resemble karate a lot.
I instantly recognised the wing chung style. that Chi sao would be a game we'd regularly play. I only did it for a year or so but you still made me nostalgic
Omg, that presentation of the number of principles really did blow my mind.
I'd be interested in seeing a test done, trying to punch or hit something with a weapon, with several different levels of telegraphing, and measuring the time that took to deliver the strike, the energy transfered, the energy cost (or how long it takes for you to get exhausted ), etc. Maybe even draw a graph. (who doesnt like graphs, right? ) Did anyone ever do something like this?
adrianks47 check the Larping community. Dagorhir and the like have some resources that are close.
I would do some tests with you
No really I know the answer to this but it’s hard to explain. So basically it’s all situational and extremely hard to do. Can happen from a level 0 fighter because they have fast reactions. On the other hand some people are really good at reading your opponent. And then there’s in between.
I would not rely on their telegraphs in a real duel as much as mine though. As long as you are wonkier and smarter than them you will be 2 steps ahead. I could never recommend actually waiting for the right moment to smack their weapon out of the way, instead create a trick that makes them do so, wait to smack but really you’re just two steps ahead wanting that to happen ya kno
Another thing I wouldn’t ever recommend is any inexperienced fighter trying to out ‘fight’ let alone believe they could block vs an extremely experienced one.
About principle 1 : always carry a Fat Man for self-defence
Hey Hey!
@MrRedstone___ I'm pretty sure they are on about the mini nuke launcher from fallout. AKA the Fat Man as it is called in game
By the way, you got me hooked on the Great Courses Plus before the New Year, and I still am maxing it out. A co worker asked me why I didn't have netflix, and I responded "I like documentary content. I listen to lectures all the time. I just finished one on the History of Human Language." "What, are they, like an hour long documentary?" "IT'S 36 HALF HOUR LECTURES YOU FOOL, DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU ARE MISSING?!?!"
Of the many CZcams channels I watch who actively promote their snake oils and various sponsors, you certainly make your advertisement the least offensive and the most interesting of all of them. I'm even tempted to actually sign on. You sell with an excellent style, useful content, and good humor. The best type of sales pitch. Good on you.
Having done a bit Wing Chun myself, I find that all these moves work finely in theory, but also all the trainers had done about 5-10 years of kickboxing before and learned how to fight there and then refined their techniques with Kung Fu.
Also an obvious disadvantage to feeling your opponent is that it also takes them a lot less time to hit you, at least somewhat mitigating your advantage of being able to react faster.
Generally it can be said that a good boxer is still a terrifying opponent and you will find that all those nice techniques will quickly collapse under quick well placed hits
Question, can you use sticky hands in gloves? And if so, had anyone actually tried to used it in Sanda (combat sport, not sparring). It seems all the wu shu goes out of the window once the full contact is about to happen.
Elador1000 kind of. I find that I often use it when I want to escape the pocket (close striking range) and the way I use it is pretty simple; I cover my opponents hands with mine, and copy his movements while retreating. In doing this I keep my hands between my face and his, which leaves my face unpunched.
Any martial arts are about speed(energy transferred also depend mainly on speed). Anyone who is fast is terrifying opponent and bitch to hit.
If You can use Wing Chun moves(not exercises) rly fck fast well You would be rly hard to hit and counter Your hits. If You're boxer that move very very fast You are also hard to hit and counter.
The faster You're the better You're
Coming from a Karate background, when i was taught about staying in contact with an attacker, it was always about holding brief control so you could land a hit that would end the fight, such as pulling the arm so your punch (or elbow, fuck actually punching someone in the face. that shit hurts) would have more strength and weight doing more damage. This always assumes that the attacker is less skilled and going for monster hits all the time. A skilled boxer would fuck most people up (unless you kick them in the knee, no one figts well on one leg), With their ability to keep the distance and throw fast punches with the most power you can when needed.
Boxing is not a life or death situation though, you do not train to take your opponents life or prevent yours from being taken. Boxers hit each other for a period of time much longer than most "real" fights. Also you're not allowed to trip nor grab each other, kind of a big difference.
Minimum force and keeping in contact works when someone is really going for you. These are key to finding your opponents center whilst keeping yours hidden.
If you're tense you can be controlled easier than when you loosen up, if your opponent is going somewhere there is no reason for you to follow.
"Oh, there is a hole in my tank !"
You've never been in a real fight..
But your teachings and guidance have helped me survive through ones, Onwards and Upwards!
Lindybeige, I visited Timgad when I was 15 years old (with my parents, of course). It was a great experience. It seems to me that I have forgotten little of that experience.
Draw browning hi power, aim centre mass.
The high power
If your at the ideal range.
boxing + wrestling + meditation. learn a bit of low kicking. carry a weapon and a light.
Thank you Lloyd very instructive. But I would also like to add, in the wider theater and strategic aspect of battle and war (limited or greater), the rule of proportionality is always kept in mind. One of your goals is to convince the enemy to take your cause on whatever the argument is. If retaliation is disproportionate to the attack, it makes it harder to rev down the fight and forces him to think that’s you’re bent on his annihilation which commits him to the longer protracted fight, dragging you with him. The longer the fight, the greater the risks and chances of failure. Etc.
So glad you included range. It's so common for even proficient, but less experienced fighters to forget about that in sparring in my experience.

Personally I always wear a flamethrower, in case someone looks at my pint.
They are actually legal in the UK due to an ancient law that was never repealed.
They really arent, they are classed as an offensive weapon. Basically the government changed it when Elon musk released his flamethrower as loads of people ordered them lol
I'm really liking the effects in this video. They are sparce enough to be effective everytime
Pretty ambitious trying to distill (hand-to-hand) combat down to three fundamentals. Excellent.

I don't know if I like more watching Lindybeige's videos for the actual contents or just for the enjoyable way he promotes his sponsors.
As soon as you began to put your hands up that way and explain a shallow degree of deflection, I knew you had to practice Wing Chun! I practice as well, and it's kind of a funny coincidence considering that I only came to your channel while looking up historical information for roleplaying games. I am also familiar with a style of fighting using a short sword in each hand from practicing Eskrima, so your videos about edge-blocking have provided food for thought (I agree with parts and disagree with others), as well. In any case you're very entertaining, keep it up. Cheers!
