In eMqhekezweni, a small village in the Eastern Cape, women are on edge. Once the second home of former President Nelson Mandela, it was known for its close-knit community living in relative tranquillity. But now it’s plagued by a sinister balaclava-clad gang running a ruthless extortion racket targeting women. At dusk, men arrive on horseback to terrorise the villagers, demanding that young girls and women of all ages pay them a protection fee or risk being raped. Most in the village are poor, unable to pay their tormentors. Yet help from the police is kilometres away.

Citizens honestly cannot be blamed for taking actions into their own hands when police officers fail to protect the citizens. That's what's even more upsetting: The fact that criminals get away with blatant crimes meanwhile civilians get punished for self-defense.

Well, one thing I will say, is that I doubt very much that Afrikaans men would just abandon their women and children to suffer like this. The men of that village should be ashamed of themselves. People can say whatever they want about Afrikaans people, but the men are fiercely protective over their women and children. They would never allow this type of thing to continue.
