Despite 2010's Clash of the Titans being a pretty bad movie, not far from the likes of Gods of Egypt, it made enough money at the box office to warrant a sequel -- 2012's Wrath of the Titans. And it was mostly the same movie so the result was quite the same -- Kronos instead of Kraken, the Minotaur instead of Medusa etc. But while the movie still didn't get much better reviews, it did some great things as a sequel, improving on the original in a few key ways. So in today's Film Perfection, let's contrast Wrath against Clash to identify a few core positive sequel qualities that all sequels should learn from.

Wrath of the Titans (2012)
A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus-the demigod son of Zeus-is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity's lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld. Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus' godly son, Ares (Edgar Ramírez), switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. wrath of the titans watch online hd clip 4k kronos kraken Gods of egypt a guide to building the ultimate trash studio movie worst movies everything wrong with wrath of the titans honest trailer biggest flops movie The Titans' strength grows stronger as Zeus' remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Clash of the Titans (2010)
The 1981 mythological fantasy adventure Clash of the Titans is resurrected in this remake from Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier. Discovered at sea as an infant by a weary fisherman, demigod Perseus (Sam Worthington) grows up with no real knowledge of his celestial origins until his watchful guardian, Io (Gemma Arterton), informs him that he is the offspring of Zeus (Liam Neeson). When Zeus' brother Hades (Ralph Fiennes) casually wipes out Perseus' family, the grieving son vows to show the gods just what kind of damage humankind can inflict on its creators. Before long, Perseus and a small group of soldiers are venturing out into the desert in order to find a way to stop the Kraken, a terrifying force of nature that an indignant Hades has vowed to unleash upon man should they fail to offer up beloved princess Andromeda (Alexa Davalos) as a sacrifice. Along the way, the soldiers encounter a trio of frightening witches with second sight, contend with Hades' devoted servant Calibos (Jason Flemyng), battle giant scorpions, and come face to face with Medusa (Natalia Vodianova), the dreaded gorgon whose gaze has the power to turn men into stone. - Krátké a kreslené filmy

Seeing Hades and Zeus fighting together was one of the most epic moments I remember seeing as a teen
Hades shouldn't be the bad guy in a movie about Greek mythology anyways
@@acediadekay3793 agreed
I remember being pretty jaded by the entire movie, nearly falling asleep, but yeah Zeus n Hades fighting together was a cool turn. It was the one time I thought Neeson fit the role.
@@acediadekay3793 He wasn't really. My only complaint was that they made Poseidon look redeemable. They did stick to the mythos in how Medusa became that gorgon creature, which was Poseidon raping her in Athena's own temple while she'd promised to remain chaste following Athena's religion. Athena and Poseidon are easily the most evil fuckers in Greek mythology.
@@TheStraightestWhitest *cough* Hera *cough* Zeus *cough*
I remember when this movie came out, I could tell it was dumb, but was just glad somebody was making an action movie in Greek mythology. It’s such a cool, relatively untapped piece of mythology for Hollywood imo.
When I was young, I had the Harry Hamlin Clash of the Titans. When I was a teen, I had Hercules and Xena. Now I have Percy Jackson books (which I enjoy) but not much in TV and cinema. Hopefully the upcoming Percy Jackson Disney+ show is good.
@@KeyDash753 I love the Percy Jackson books. I don’t think Disney+ will replicate their effect, even with Rick involved.
@@TheAlienGangster don't know if you read Alex Rider but that amazon prime show was pretty decent so hopefully Disney+ can do Percy Jackson well
I'm surprised that no one has started making a Game of Thrones-style series about Greek mythology. If done right, it would be amazing; it has everything: violence, epic battles, magic, orgies, incest, betrayal, personal drama, interesting characters with great character arcs... and it has the benefit of already being a well-known "franchise" which should be an instant audience draw and make a big studio more favourably inclined to finance it.
Edit: Not to mention there's enough source material to make a whole Marvel-style extended universe. Ovid's Metamorphoses is a whole series (one or two seasons at least) in and of itself; same thing with Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and there are tons of films to make about specific characters or events, and why not the Aeneid while you're at it? Come on, Hollywood, make it happen.
Try the bible
Ahh yes.
Starting my day with cup of Filmento acquired knowledge.
They could have made the Minotaur more like Terminator in T1. Something unstoppable, that does not need to slow down, nor care whether its wounded or not. Instead they made bad Halloween costum with bad fighting skills and not so surprising strength. It actually would have been a nice conclusion to make Perseus sacrifice himself, so at least the oracle was right in some way.
I'm sure they were planning on making a trilogy lmao

Ah yes, the duology which has "Titans" in both titles but has only one titan to show and he dies in 5 minutes.
Yep Attack on Titan really offers more on that subject.
There was supposed to be a third part which was gonna include Titans as a whole but critical reviews were bad so movie never happened. These movies were enjoyable as hell even if ignoring the OG lore.
Im pretty sure Titans just means like "epic figures" in the old Harryhausen movie Clash of the Titans was based on, it was only at Wrath of the Titans where they use an actual Titan from the myths.
Honestly, I wish they conclude this franchise, feels like it left off a bit open ended, I rather finished it in a trilogy and leave open a possible new trilogy with his son taking over or something, maybe do the same with other mythologies like Roman, Egyptian, Norse and such, think about it
@@bradwhite5884 Just go to the God of War franchise they have that still going

The thing with Hades is that he is probably the most stand up guy compared to all the other gods. Sure, he kidnapped Persephone but that was about it.
The thing about Hades kidnapping is that according to many sources, he did ask Zeus' consent before kidnapping his niece/wife and Zeus said "Yes" so Hades did it.
Hades gets so much hate but hes probably the most sane and relatable guy, hes just stuck in hell for eternity, that would make me pissy too
@@cuongquoc5877 For some reason your comment made me think of Saddam Hussein.
And he only kidnapped Persephone because he felt lonely. And he didn't even force himself on her or anything. He waited until she wanted him as well. Later he even allowed her to leave.
I don't understand why Hades is always seen as the bad guy in pop culture. Poseidon and Athena are easily the vilest of Greek Gods.
@@TheStraightestWhitest because they associate him with satan and the underworld with hell because of the current popular religions. more of a misunderstanding than anything
So am I crazy or was the CGI in this movie absolutely top notch? Intro monster, cyclops, the dialogue certainly doesn't match the feast for the eyes I enjoyed about this film. Also Hapheastus.
Yup, both movies had phenomenal special effects, i think the gods at ILM where responsible for those.
They ignored the fact that Hephaestus is Zeus’ son, yet his actor is clearly much older than Zeus.
i really dislike the cgi they use when the gods die but other than that i think the cgi is pretty good
@@doomy_mcdoomerson they're gods. they can change their appearance as they see fit
@@Sunfish789 Or the producers effed up. Notice how not once in the movies does Hephaestus ever refer to Zeus as his Father. Because the producers/writers didn’t do proper research and didn’t know their relation.
This film was more epic visually but I think the story needed more work.
Totally
It's funny... Wrath of the Titans IS most-definitely a "better" movie than Clash of the Titans, but Harryhausen's Clash of the Titans is STILL better than both of them, even though it's a rather shallow adventure romp.
I have loved the original since I was a kid. Pure cheese, but so much fun.
Harryhausen's Clash of the titans is by my humble knowledge also the most true to the classic Greek tale of Perseus; as for the two "Titans-films"; didn't like them, the CGI was great(like in most of these films) but their stories were completely NOT the original story, just a mish-mash of Greek mythological figures & monsters.
Re-doing things with a "modern" twist doesn't always pan out well...
The original hasn't really aged well, the remake and Wrath still look great 10 years later.

At 7:50 when he started talking about how the sequel expanded and improved on ideas of the first movie, weather those original ideas were good or bad, it made me suddenly think about star wars (the later movies) and how they just chose to abandon storylines that weren't well received in their sequels instead of trying to improve on them.
It's nice to see this film get some attention. It's a perfect turn-your-brain-off popcorn extravaganza. Watch on the best sound system you can find (not the loudest, the best - they're different).
Watched this movie in MBO cinemas, the maze scene and Zeus & Hades vs Cronos is very Epic and unforgetable
These are some great, nuanced points. I like the Star Wars example, since not only did they abandon their own ideas mid trilogy (resetting momentum), they also started out trying to not be the prequals and missed the mark on what made them bad. For example, prequel politics were boring, but the original at least mentioned them to add context. The sequals didn't mention them ever, so the scope of what was happening was confusing.
True. Even thought, i think Star Wars with their prequels are little bit strange case. For someone who knew originals before prequels - sure, you are right. But if you are younger and watch it from episode 1 to episode 6, than it sudenlly works differently because pretty calm situation where good guys are in control gets progresivly worse and darker and sirious until in the end everything you knew - including fate of Anakin Skywalker - lies on the shoulders of just a small group of people. Also the fact that George had at least some vision about the past so he mentioned clone wars helped a lot.
6:10 I laughed a lot with this, I love your editing

Apocalypto: how to do Predator film perfection
100% a fair assessment, I vastly preferred this movie over the first, I respect the writers for respecting the previous movie so much more than more popular sequels do. I would honestly like to see a third movie made. If they can improve this much from the first movie, imagine how much they could improve a second time.
12:08 I object that tone of voice, Peter the son of Jim is a pretty likeable guy and very competent!
I legit enjoyed Wrath of the Titans far more than the COTT remake. The usage of even more Greek mythology and creatures for an "original" story makes it such a guilty pleasure.
But yeah, that Minotaur design is disappointing.
We need more fun fantasy action movies.
