  • Does the Metacycle have regenerative braking (regen)? How to change the amount of regen? If you are asking yourself these questions, you came to the right place! :)

    Honestly I had thought the Metacycle didnt have regen since the early reviews, thanks for this!

      I'm actually still trying to understand if EBS is using battery energy to slow down or if it actually re-charges the battery (trying to get some ride data on it). There is definitely some form of regen, but not clear how efficient that is, at least from what I have seen/read.

    Thank you for sharing. Good info. It was always evident that Regen was available. After about 5 miles off a full charge you can feel it and even watch the display showing current flowing when off neutral throttle. It's quite aggressive but somewhat controllable with the throttle. Turning it down a little may actually be a benefit.

    @7:47 the HDC rpm is also the reference rpm for each speed. Your speed 2 is set for 75%. 75% of 500 is 375. If you were in speed 1 (which they set at 80%), it will go faster.
    Speed 2 is default and in the ports section you will see low_speed and high_speed. I guess Metacycle has a special switch with skowest speed not actually wired ti anything and second speed wired to low_speed port and the other speed either to high_speed or sports mode.

    Rec a Pit Boss rear stand for quality, and similar for probably cheaper.

      Yeah I second the opinion of purchasing both a front and rear stand. The rear rim with the hub motor weighs close to 100 lb according to a video on killboy's channel when he was having the stock rubber swapped out at a tire shop.

    Well that's kind of disappointing in one sense. I was hoping regen could be added later and increase the range, but if it's already there and the range is not great... nothing going to fix that but an additional battery.

    One common complaint i heard about Metacycle is its very sluggish off the line. Now that i see the settings i can see why.
    On page 1 “start setting”, “rate of rise” that should be 250 if you want quickest increase in speed.
    Additionally
    On page 2 you have soft start enabled. If you uncheck that its going to do exactly what the throttle tells it.
    I would suggest turning off soft start then slowly increasing rate of rise until it gives desired performance or you reach max setting of 250.
    You can also change rate of decline if you want to to be more instantaneous.
    Since i use brake activated regen, i have rate of decline set to 250 so i have coast, regen, then mechanical brakes,
    If you decide to turn on throttle release regen then thats where rate of decline is useful in smoothing the transition between throttle on and chop throttle and regen.

    I was wondering if there is a way to make the headlights switch fully functional instead of the running lights from automatically turning on when the bike turns on it would be. { Off - running lights on - full head lights on }. If at all possible

    Thank you so much for posting. I am not technically inclined and was wondering do you think all the cables and equipment you need to do these hacks yourself will become commercially available for purchase in the near future?

    • @metacyclehack
      @metacyclehack  Před rokem +1

      Stay tuned! :) I'm planning to build a wireless solution and will try to gauge how much interest there is for something like it. I'm building it for myself, but if there's enough interest, I can definitely build something commercially. The tuning application is a complete disaster, so even if I would sell you a cable, it would be a pain to configure. My ultimate goal would be to have a stage I/stage II type of mod, similar to what is already available for different cars.

      @@metacyclehack I'm mostly interested in turning down/off the regen. I live in a mountain area and would enjoy coasting more instead of constantly being on the throttle.

    I was told by Sondors that my Metacycle does not have regen. Mine was one of the first delivered. But it sure feels like it. When battery is near fully charged there is no motor braking as you would expect with regen,. Still a mystery I guess.

    REAL REGEN NEEDS GEARS.. FYI you are just burning up the hall sensors on all bldc motors when using regen. It takes volts and makes heat to slow a motor with the batter. When the motor starts working intermittently you will know when the hall sensor is cooked.

    Thanks for this! Removing the Regen. For me would be ideal because I "Hypermile" Get up to speed and then coast. By coasting you are increasing your range a LOT more than you will with the regen slowing down and stopping you from coasting. Are you in CA?

      My guess is yes but my guess is also not knowing the motor limits may burn out but that’s just me thinking

    • @imho7250
      @imho7250 Před rokem +1

      No, its not even in use. The top speed right now is 100% of 1200rpm (whatever speed that is. The only way to go faster is increase HDC above 1200 and see if it can go faster. But be aware this is in the range of flux weakening where you increase amps and get less torque, which at a certain point would cause amps to max while RPM falls and fry the motor if allowed to run like that for long.
      If you want to safely see how fast it can go you can increase speed 1 and 2 to 100% and slowly try higher amp limits.
      To freely test you need a more permanent solution to get the 2 can bus wires (3 if you use the bluetooth module) going to a 4-pin connector that the standard Votol debugging cable has. On my scooter with Votol i can set my laptop on the floorboard and go on a test and tune run. You need a way to secure your windows device to the Metacycle. You really need to see amps and rpm or speed to tune it.

      @@sparkfire1223 , hopefully by then this channel will have most of the research done and you will be able to jump right in. I don’t have a Metacycle but i have a Votol controller. Lol.
      The confusing part is they set low_Gear at 80% (of 1200) and mid gear at 75% and the gear switch is a button not a switch. Normal there is a 1-2-3 switch you set the gear, or optionally a jog button you press and each time it advances. Thats why the app has the starting position for the button, which seems to be set “mid” from Sondors.
      Then Sports Button overrides that and enters sports mode. But once he shows the port settings we can see it.
      Also we need to see the calibration page to see if it has motor temperatures sensor and will automatically throttle down.

    • @metacyclehack
      @metacyclehack  Před rokem

      Until someone gets the specs for the motor, I'm not planning to make any really potentially destructive changes, I am worried about the motor more than the controller honestly. The controller seems to be set quite conservatively, which is good, but it might also mean the motor can't take it. I'm confused about the gears too, but maybe they just did not care. The metacycle has only one gear, and it's set to medium. See my other video for changing it to high...
