an En passant checkmate against Magnus gotta be top 3 biggest flex in human history
the other two would be promotion to bishop & knight mate

Yes
A doubled revealed mate from En Passant would be en even bigger flex (eg, if the bishop at g7 wasn't there and white had another rook on d7).

that’s a fascinating line
Respect to magnus for not resigning and letting it happen
I was really happy when he allowed the checkmate to happen. In most games where someone finds some genius or beautiful checkmate combination the opponent just resigns before they get checkmated, and it kind of ruins it a bit. Thankfully Magnus is a good sport.

That sounds pretty damn rare. I thought the 13-yo Morphy vs his dad game where he castle checkmated with rook odds was amazing. Do people realize he retired from competitive chess at 22? (Just sending out some Morphy love)
Is there a real example of a long castle stalemate? (not theoretical)
Its actually not too difficult. Basically the idea is that your opponents king can move into a box with no moves and then whatever move you make if it isnt check or it doesn't open a square will be stalemate. The real question is how you still have castling rights when your opponent has nothing.
This was an energizing game! Nice work GM Hammer!

As a chess player, I can totally understand getting burned out once you reach your peak elo because you get frustrated with yourself that you can't seem to advance. That being said, I truly appreciate you, Levi, for this wonderful content and to see your passion for chess. It is inspiring.
Unless you are at least a national master, i don't think you've reached your peak elo

@@inujosha thats great man
@@inujosha It's less about skill and more about practice and time. It's about just putting more and more games under your belt, getting more experience and familiarity to be able to notice moves naturally, and to study the actual theory behind chess and understand the different openings, their strengths and weaknesses, and become better at being able to see how moves are going to play out 5-10 moves down the line. All of which comes from practice and learning.
@@inujosha i am now 1750-1800 on lichess and i can tell you the biggest difference i had was to keep playing, just playing and playing will make you improve BUT you have to play consciously analyze your mistakes, positions and everything, that's is when little by little you will see progress. To people saying castle mate is more rare: you can set up a castle mate by force (for example, just don't move king and one rook the entire game, make two queens to force the king into the D or F file and castle). Setting up en passant mate is ridiculously difficult and often requires your opponent to make the moves to allow it to happen.

En passant checkmate is like a walk-off hit by pitch in baseball
I vote for this comment to be pinned 🤣
Almost like a walk off intentional walk lmao, it’s almost better to just resign before it happens 😂
What is that, can anyone explain
@@parthibhayat It's basically like the baseball equivalent of en passant checkmate. Hope this helps.
In baseball, it is the bottom of the 9th (last) inning. The home team is up to bat and the score is tied. The bases are loaded. There might be 2 outs, and the count might be 3-2 (3 balls 2 strikes). The final pitch of the game, the pitcher throws the ball to the plate and its a bit wild - it hits the batter from the home team. He gets to advance for free to 1st base. The players on the bases all advance one space, and the man on 3rd base comes home and scores the winning run - for the win! (I think I got that right).
Magnus recognized his chance to become a frelling legend on Gin Alley and took it.
You know it's game over when one of the players sacrifices THE ROOOOOKKKK!!

I think a castling checkmate 0-0-0# or 0-0# is rarer than en passant checkmate, would love to see something like that happen in a tournament lol
Happened to me once in blitz 😔
yah. . . and edward lasker missed his chance to do the o-o-o mate, iirc. instead, he just moved his king out of the way.
Don't forget the elusive Il Vaticano#
Yeah I have one in 5min rapid so cool lol only did it cu it was there at the end of the game
I've actually played a game as white where an early queen trade (Qxd8, Kxd8) left my opponent's king stuck in the middle of board unable to castle and on the completely open d-file. Later in the game I got a position where my opponent blundered making Rad1# possible. While looking at the move I thought I had not yet castled my king, so I cheekly decided to play 0-0-0 to place the queen's rook on d1 for mate. One caveat: this was a game between ~1200 ELO players so I doubt you'd see that line in a tourney.
