So, in the second Bill and Ted movie, when Albert Einstein correctly names Smokey and the Bandit 3 and adds 'Smokey is the Bandit', this is what he meant. That part always confused me. That guy was smart.

I spoke with one of the co-writers of the picture, Mr. Stuart Birnbaum. Here is some of the insight he provided me with regards to Smokey 3
Jackie Gleason would only commit to the film if he had total approval of the script.
Burt Reynolds had no desire of starring in the picture as he didn't get along with the Producer Mort Engelberg.
There were at least 11 versions of the script written before Gleason would approve of the final script.
Gleason hated the script and asked "why do we need writers?"
The whole film was pretty much under Gleason's control.
The film was screened and that is when they decided to bring in Jerry Reed.
They basically just recreated the Bandit scenes with Reed.
Burt's cameo was always in the picture and was basically done as a favor to Gleason and the studio.
The lack of Bandit dialogue in the script was on purpose as Gleason was always ad-libbing.
Mr. Birnbaum has no idea if the original Gleason/Bandit footage still exists.

I knew of the idea of Smokey is the Bandit but I didn't know the movie was shot. If it was put on youtube, I might just watch it just to see how dumb it was. There are movies that are just not meant to have any sequels. "Smokey & the Bandit is one of them.

The rediscovery of this trailer went a long way toward settling the question. That and a script was leaked on to the net which was legit, along with some intrepid researchers finding articles contemporary to the production mentioning that there indeed were reports of Gleason playing both roles along with the unsuccessful test screening.
At one point, some said that the “is the bandit” title was more figurative, in the sense that Justice wasn’t really playing the Burt Reynolds part but by agreeing to transport the fish cross country and subsequently being chased and attempting to be thwarted, that he basically was the equivalent of the bandit. Which made sense, since it does comport with the theatrical version.
But it’s clear at this point there was a film made with Gleasonnplaying dual roles.

I had heard a long time ago that Burt Reynolds didn't want to shoot his scene wherever they were filming it. so they said they were going to go to the home he had in Florida at the time and film the final scene on his property. It was a party mansion with acres of land and there was supposedly an area there with an outdoor bar and pool. supposedly one of the ideas was for Buford Bandit to arrive at the location which would double as the place he had to get the shark to. When he gets there he decides to remove the hat and go back to being Buford T Justice and hide among the party goers that are there. Buford Smokey arrives and starts to look for him. BTJ gets to the bar and sits down hoping Smokey does not see him. He orders a drink. at this point a man in a red shirt sits down next to him but he's out of focus so as to not reveal who he is. when the barkeep brings him the drink, BTJ asks the barkeep how much he owes him. the man next to him then offers to pay for him and we get a callback to the original film when Bandit payed for buford's lunch at the diner. BTJ turns to tell him "much obliged" and realizes it's Bo bandit Darvelle. BTJ says his "oof". after a little talk, the bandit tells BTJ that he has retired, has the ball and chain and is now just relaxing. his days of showing off are in the past. but that if there was one person in the world he could see carrying on the legacy it would be Buford. Buford realizes he's enjoyed being the Bandit that he decides to continue doing what the bandit does best....show off. also he hates being retired and does not want to go back home. he makes his way back through the party where he runs into the Enos boys and ends up taking up a bet from them. this ends up with BTJ once again getting in the trans am and peeling off, while Buford Smokey chases after him.

Hi...Originally a movie was shot where Jackie Gleason played the Bandit. It was done because in Part 2 he played himself and two other sheriffs that were his relatives. The movie was actually shown and tester audiences were confused as to who was suppose to be the bad guy so it was scrapped and some footage used in the final one which had the Snowman playing the bandit. I got that from Paul Williams aka Little Enos.

***** It could be confusing in the context of a long movie. People are accustomed to associating faces and voices to specific characters more than attire or surroundings, and if you look away to get some popcorn, you might hear a line, but not be sure which character said it. True confessions here: I saw an old '80s HBO movie called, "Hitler's Daughter" (just what it sounds like), in which Melody Anderson plays two distinct roles. The first time I saw it, I was trying to put the two together and figure out how they could be the same person. Granted, in this case people would go in knowing one actor was playing two different roles, but again, after an hour or so, it would at least get old.

"Smokey is the bandit" aside, there is an unsurprising yet almost unspoken reason this film had bad boxoffice. Even with this finished film, universal was unhappy and treated it like junk. Instead of putting it in a nationwide, 3,000 screen opening, they doomed it to the dreaded "regional release " - opening in a few cities a week starting in August 83. The film bombed city by city, never gaining momentum, usually booked for only a week. That summer it seemed they had higher hopes for drek like 'jaws 3' and 'metalstorm'. Also, there was next to zero publicity. Look at that carelessly thrown together poster. By the time people knew it was in theaters, it was out. In other words, universal was "their own worst enemy" (to quote Buford T)

There was a dream sequence scene filmed of Jackie playing the bandit, but it never made it to the final cut. No whole movie was ever filmed that way. In 1983, the segment was shown on Entertainment Tonight.

You are wrong the original version with Gleason playing both rules was released to test audiences, they were confused so they reshot the script with Jerry Reed in it.

The petition is useless. All the footage that was cut before the movie was reworked, was most likely not saved. There would be no way to restore it. Pre-release screener copies of films are also usually crudely edited, because very few people are going to see them anyway. If they recover the footage, they would still have to do the final editing, which won't be cheap.

@dlrevh00 I think snopes.com needs you to actually send them a jpeg or movie file attachment to the email address they give. I think they delete anything else that doesn't have an attachment like links to your youtube or mine.

    Respond to this video...
WOW so this is the original trailer with the 1st concept of Gleason being both Buford and Bandit. Until Universal axed the idea and put Jerry Reed instead because Burt was shooting Stroker Ace. No wonder trilogy pack does not have a trailer for part 3, where'd u find this rare trailer?
