The French fans were what the AEW crowds think they are
Crowds? Ain't nobody in that building!
Geeze even tna impact has more fans than all elite wokeness 😂
AEW has crowd?
You mean all wrestling companies not just AEW
😂FR
11 thousand fans, sounded like 100 thousand
Imagine there WAS a hundred thousand. I think they might have caused an earthquake.
@@thecurmudgeon3131with the way the hard camera was shaking , you might be right.
They're only like that because they don't get these events regularly. It would be like any other crowd if regular shows were held there.

True. Thanks Stone Cold 🙄
It's gotten less bad however I despise the What chants.
Puerto Rico was electric too.
US crowds:
SOMETHING SOMETHING
CLAP CLAP CLAPCLAPCLAP
Sounds about right. XD
The European crowd appreciates WWE more because we barely get any shows here. We embrace every move, every action and every character.

The chant for AJ was absolutely insane. Had me thinking it was 2016 all over again.
The French crowd didn't disappoint, They need to go there more often
Never again.

The Lyon crowd put every other wrestling crowd in the world on notice. They were utterly insane. They cheered and popped for everything. They went wild and never once stopped. We need more of this. But when you are starved for wrestling, you are going to get a rabid crowd. WWE would be insane to not give France or Paris a Big 4 PPV if not Mania itself.
France is the country not a city. :P
Sorry buddy the deal is already inked for Royal Rumble or mania in Saudi. Money wins 💰. France is for for Olympics, Football and Tour de france. They don't need wrestling, just once after every decade.

Jim Johnston is a national treasure.
Completely agree Brian last is a fucking tool. Like who the fuck has anything negative to say about Jim Johnston ?! Sure not everything was that great but the vast majority was gold! Is there a more perfect theme than stone colds?! Fucks sake
Seriously. I played the WWF anthems CD I bought at the thrift store nonstop in my car for over a year... actually kinda fucked up when i think about it now(specially since that was like 7 years ago)
I know AJ felt like a million bucks
He looked amazing as well.
& he held character the WHOLE TIME. but i'm sure the kid in him was screaming!!!! lol
I can't get that "phenomenal" chant out of my head. It was as much fun watching the wrestlers react to the crowd as it was seeing the crowd react to the wrestlers.
Yes! That was a great synchronicity that all these elements lined up to produce. I can only imagine how it must have felt for AJ!
Styles definitely soaked it in each time
AJ turned baby face for a second and acknowledged the French crowd on Twitter.
“IL EST VRAIMENT….PHÉNOMENAL…….LA LA LA LA LA LA”
Wonder if it will be replicated in the States on Smackdown. That would be cool.
AJ and Jey must have felt like gods with the way the Lyon crowd treated them.
Not even the hottest of American crowds can replicate Jey's entrance.
That was more than WrestleMania crowd in level of noises
The thing is Jim Johnston wrote some bangers for some midcarders like Billy gunn, Rico, The Brood, The Boogeyman, they were all atleast iconic.
That crowd was the best part of the show I loved it when they were singing Randy Orton’s entrance music
That absolutely gave me goosebumps. The crowds overseas wake up in the early morning hours to watch live events and people here didn’t think they would be knowledgeable fans? lol
@@JerseyNYC83 exactly. You know I was against this idea but after seeing these crowds across the world go crazy for pay per views like backlash I think it’s time we have a wrestlemania overseas give North America a break and see how wrestlemania would do outside of the continent

Meanwhile, the AEW Dynamite crowd started chanting "Let's go Oilers!" just to amuse themselves during Serena Drab's half hour promo.
I hope she is doing okay in her personal life after those seizures but God, her delivery was awful.
Also during the Swerve segment
In classic AEW mark fashion, they cursed the 4-1 lead. Everything they touch goes to shit

I’ve been saying for YEARS now that if WWE had Royal Rumble, Wrestlemania, Summerslam and Survivor Series in the US, but took every other PPV to Europe or Australia or maybe somewhere like Japan or Korea that those shows, BECAUSE they would be a special, once a year event, the crowds would be fucking insane. And we’re seeing that.
Even AEW, when everyone was saying they wouldn’t sell 20,000 at Wembley, being an English man, I knew they’d probably either sell it out or get close to it - not because everyone going is a die hard AEW fan boy, not at all, but simply because (at the time) everyone saw it as being a one-off show that they’d probably never see again
I knew Corny would have the right and opposite opinion when i seen Russo complaining about the crowd ruining it

They complain when a crowd is dead and complain when a crowd is loud. Cant win
@@YeTismUnless its them doing it and they will justify their reasons... U cant beat them 😢
I love the crowd in backlash, that vibe was something else.
They complain when WWE has a hot crowd.
The IWC complaining? I have never heard of such a thing. Ever.
Here in America it’s annoying with the whole Wallace and Gromit energy this crowd had. Like you can tell they’re living under tyrants and this event is such a bread and circus and escape to take them out of that reality. It’s actually painful. I’d much rather them stand up to tyrants ruling over them, get more freedom for themselves and self respect then see them this desperate my dawg.
The crowd was hot and it was great...at times.
Them singing the themes was great, them popping for everything was great.
In the Bloodline vs Orton and Owens match, they were great.
...then came the Triple Threat and the "Heeeeey Bayley" chant came back up, which got a bit annoying after they started it up for the THIRD time in a short span, but not too bad.
Then came Priest/Jey and this is where the "Simplement deux! clap clap clapclapclap" started to get annoying, because it was about the 40th time I'd heard it that night.
Come the Woman's Tag Match, the crowd was still hot and it was only annoying the "Simplement deux! clap clap clapclapclap" again.
Then came the Main Event and I had to watch the last half on mute. Between the "Simplement deux! clap clap clapclapclap", which they did ANOTHER twenty plus times and the "Il est vraiment ! Il est vraiment ! Il est vraiment phénoménal lalalalalalaaa" that they did every time Styles would mount any sort of offense (about twenty times), it just got to be too much.
If you ever got annoyed because you heard "Let it Go" from Frozen too many times, it's exactly like that. It has nothing to do with how "hot" the audience is, Repetition breeds annoyance.
It's the same thing as when American audiences chant "What?".
Never saw that many French people happy see Americans since 1945
1944 technically. Almost all of France was long since liberated by the time 1945 showed up.
Let's kill that joke even more: Lyon was liberated by the Free French Forces, not by Americans.
Thanks guys
Americans should thank the French because without them, they wouldn’t be a nation.
Are you sure? Only the French Resistance was happy because they were commie terrorists. Also, I bet you didn't know that America's "liberation" was filled with bombing cities (Lyon was one of them) and mass rapes. The French didn't mind the German occupation, look at France today compared to when Germany occupied them and tell me which one is better. You've been lied to.
one of the things America will never do better than any of the EU is amazing crowds. EU is a whole different ball game was so happy to see this PPV was in France. if that crowd was at Mania it would have been the most insane thing ever. Americans need to step our game up!
Not a surprise since it was the European and Canadian crowds that pretty much kept the WWF alive in the mid-90’s.
We’re definitely getting a Mania in Europe before the decade is over. That French crowd, holy mother of god, they shook the earth with just 11,000 people
Tre Bien
Hey, now don't disrespect my Puertorrican peeps like that. Backlash 2023 was lit, too.
There are some funny video's comparing basketball and American football vs Football crowds in the US and Europe. Whole different approach to being engaged in "sports" outside the US.
Waiting for the episode on Ric Flair at the Piesanos
The saddest thing was the random other customer mock-challenging Drunk Grandpa to a fight in the parking lot, on behalf of the employees. Flair trying to do a "Travis Bickle" tough guy act while barely being able to stand... Imagine the guy we saw "intervene" in the last Sting matches, whose chops couldn't swipe a coffee cup off a table anymore, trying to fight somebody that is thirty or forty years younger and reasonably able-bodied, _for real_ ?
If Flair wasn't such an insufferable, delusional, abusive asshole, I'd feel sorry for him. Geriatric alcoholism is tragic.
4:16 The Orient Express entrance music was repurposed for Bull Nakano comes to mind, or Kurt Angle's was a slightly altered version of The Patriot.
“Somebody Call My Momma” was lifted from Ernest Miller and given to Brodus Clay.
This Fire Burns was used by Randy Orton once....it didn't suit him and a few months later CM Punk debuted to it.
Some of Jim Johnston’s themes were very cheesy but at least they’re not bland like Def Rebel. Jim’s themes had a certain identity to them.
Jim Johnston had his misses, but he made a lot of memorable themes. Today’s themes show how great he was
Trust me, the German’s can sing in other languages.
See the revival of Smokey’s ‘Living Next Door To Alice’ in the 2000’s.
I think this could help support the notion for an off-season for wrestling. At least one month. One month of nothing for fans can starve them enough to react better in the crowds. Food for thought.

Vince killed these kinds of fans in 2009 and hasn't been the same since.
What do you mean?
Nope, actually, the overseas crowds have always been live, you just never got to see it.
Crowds were still going untill around 2019 when product was the worst its ever been
Round of applause for the crowd. It was wonderful. It was like it was the last event they could ever attend, they went full out. Brilliant job!
When they had Backlash in Puerto Rico last time, the crowd was really into it and they showed it. The crowd in France though was superb; just fucking magic. Surtout, la foule était plus que formidable.
The return of Jean E. Croissante !
When big shows come to Europe they don't pool fans just from the town they are in but even near by towns, cities, counties and neighboring countries so the population of the city isn't really a factor. Even for a PLE like Backlash that's usually or previously though of as a midway/secondary PLE in States.
I.E. I spotted a guy with a Swiss flag at the entrance ramp.
the fans at Backlash this year was amazing but nothing compares to Backlash last year that puerto rico crowd was phenomenal plus that was WWE'S first PLE in puerto rico since 2005 I'm very much looking forward to seeing where backlash takes place next year if this is going to be a yearly thing moving forward.
Puerto Rico was lame compared to Lyon, France.

Concerts are like that too. The crowds in other countries are way louder and more in to it than in the US
The crowd was so crazy the hard camera was shaking
The last time I saw/was part of a crowd that was so crazy into the wrestling from start to finish was in ECW. It was just real raw insane passion. Everything since in the US has been sterilised, homogenised & synthesised. So it's great to see parts of the world that still have that enthusiasm despite the fact that wrestling is nowhere near what it used to be
Lyon’s population of 522,000 would put it 36th largest in the US, between Sacramento and Mesa.
The french crowd was absolutely amazing... i cant wait to watch the show in Scotland... they might shake the arena
I didn’t understand the majority of what they were chanting but, it made the usual forgettable Backlash event pretty fun to watch.
There is a good video on youtube with all the translations. Or a reddit post if you prefer.
I would not object to that "Two Count/Simply Two" chant becoming a crowd staple going forward.
That was "one, two, sacré bleu".
Sacre bleu. It's a play on words because it rhymes
For non-europeans, it's not so much "WWE never comes here" and more "We are *always* like this!"
Look at any football (soccer) match, or rugby match: even on a local team level we blow the roof off the building because that's what we do. It's why we don't need cheerleaders, we just cheer on our own.
Absolute nonsense. If WWE put on 50 shows in France the crowd would be halves by week 2 and nowhere near as loud. All the super loud fans would be like "I've already been to 7 shows I'll skip some for a while". It's absolutely because it was a one off special thing.
Can’t wait for Clash at Castle: Scotland and Bash in Berlin
Now I wonder what the crowd would’ve sounded like had we seen a surprise appearance like a John Cena or it Roman was there etc
We in Europe know how to cheer. Because of football and yes it's called football not "soccer"
They were amazing.
That TL Hopper theme was some of Jim Johnston's best work
WrestleMania in the future needs to happen in Parc des Princes or Stade de France
I saw people complaining about the crowd "putting themselves over". These people dont know what fun is if it stared them in the face. That crowd was so much entertaining to watch and listen that it elevated the entire atmosphere of the event.
Yeah and other then the National Anthem once all the chants where directed at the action. So it was enhancing the match.
According to Wikipedia, if Lyon is 500,000, it would be in between Kansas City and Atlanta, #37th largest. Corny was so close, and got it on the spot off the dome.
2.2 millions with the suburbs though (Métropole de Lyon).
@@alexisdigital If we go by a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) of 2.2 million, it would make Lyon the #31st largest MSA in the US. Averages out!
@kleberpauta8209 It makes sense. France has been centralized around Paris since the Revolution. Other cities often feel neglected on all levels.
One of the absolute best crowds ever.
If Punk was cleared just imagine the crowd singing Cult of Personality 😮
The French crowd was such a breath of fresh air, especially in an era of the same old "what?" chants from fans here in the US.
And that "Phenomenal" chant they gave AJ's been stuck in my head since the show. No idea what they were saying but it's catchy.
They chanted : ‘He is truly phenomenal’

That crowd had all the fun except when Kross and his group came out on SmackDown, lol.
Basically the same crowd that would be at a football (soccer) match

Jim Johnston is a legend.
I'm still trying to find out what the crowd was chanting after every two count.
Me too. I can’t believe they kept that up throughout the entire show on every two count.
"Un, Deux, Simplement deux!" I think it means "only 2"
@@yusufgazi7 You are right. Only/Just 2.
I think that crowd works for big stadium European soccer games but was highly disrespectful to the wrestlers trying to concentrate on their craft. The crowd was more into their selves than what they paid to see for entertainment. I think it was too disrespectful. I think that Japan audiences are often TOO respectful. US crowds are usually just right. It could be a little bit rowdier like it was in the late 90s, but I think that culture has to be artificially recreated somehow. Perhaps with more/better hype-men in-between matches and during commercial breaks and also more allowances for, and encouragement of signage would work?
Yepp
Take B PPV's and put them after your big A ones where storylines get wrapped up. Hot crowds that can make matches that now have little build and make it seem bigger than they have any right to be.
Theres a streak of foreign ppv. King of the ring is Saudi, Clash at the Castle is Scotland, and Money in the Bank is Canada. Hopefully those 3 crowds are all really good.

I honestly despised the “Simplement Deux” chanting after every 2 count.
I didn't mind it for standard kickouts, but it ruined any time there was a quick reversal or something. Kind of killed the finish of Bayley's match.
Have you been to some indie shows In the past, it's similar to them doing one two, sweet chant on every two count. It's funny the first few times but it's a played out joke and gets grating and repetitive quick

Love the crowd but the only sticking point for me was the oversaturation of "SIMPLEMENT DEUX", go ahead and yell it after the count but starting a whole ass chant after every single one got a little bit grating.
that show was like gladiator fights at the coliseum
The funny thing is that In Europe these fans would do it every week, because this is how they are with soccer and their local sports similar with South America
All fans from all country needs to take notes from the fans. U.S. Fans as well. 😊
500k people is the 3rd largest in France? Wow.
I currently live in a city with 280k people and I think that barely makes top 100 in the States.
The reason Cody didn't get the title last year is because they had no heels for him to feud with.
They still don't really have any heels for him to feud with besides Gunther (who you can't have lose after losing at Mania, so not yet) but the change cannot be delayed any longer, so here we are.
Hence the only solution is to leverage live-starved international crowds who are sure to cheer. The idea is that stateside fans (who might gradually react differently) and stockholders are then socially engineered with an "everything is in fact, okay" attitude by witnessing this, and ignore the thought that continues to nag at them which is: "Why did AJ challenge for the belt when he lost at Mania? Why did L.A Knight and AJ have a rematch when there was already a clear winner? Why was the notion of a singles match at Mania permanently devalued, moving forward?"
Once again, not enough main event heels. Not enough main event heels because you had a long-standing (heel) champ with both belts. Even without that it's always been a problem. Hogan is a guy who understood this main event problem, which is why he constantly was trying to invent the next big bad. But today, with no territory system anymore to pick out the next nasty heel, and Vince having been allergic to "making" anyone for the last 15 years out of the fear that they will then leave like Rock did, the problem is far, far worse. So, us non-international (i.e., American and Canadian fans) are made to tolerate this situation by watching other countries have their live event scarcity being leveraged against poor long-term booking quality.
It is going to take a lot of book creativity and a lot of hardcore fans "looking the other way" in order to get Cody a reign that lasts beyond Summerslam. And, if it's only going to last until Summerslam...what have we been doing for the last two years anyway? If am Cody I am being VERY careful in the ring from now on, because one way the company can be saved from this corner they have booked themselves into is for Cody to get injured again.
This thumbnail is an all-timer!
No shit, best crowd they’ve ever had. I thought ECW 2005/2006 was good but these people didn’t shut up 😂
