Just on wiring any plug, the earth (green/yellow) wire should always be longer than either positive or neutral to prevent a dangerous short. If the cable is pulled the earth will be the last pulled out that way. 👍🏻

Hi James, the welder didn’t come with a plug because as others have said it’s intended for use with a 16A plug however your perfectly safe to use it on 13A standard plug up to around level 3 on your welder you can use Max and setting 2 (150A max current) in short bursts but don’t be surprised if the plug gets warm. It’s a great little welder perfect for a beginner. Good luck in your venture.

Why couldn’t Sealey supply the correct plug all fitted, whether it be 13 amp or 16 amp like its supposed to be?

Bob Willis Corgi Restoration I think it’s either of 2 things 1. it gives the end user the option or 2 the welder can be hard wired in to an outlet, although a potable unit like this the 2nd option is highly unlikely. Just my thoughts on it.

For gas, have a word with your local pub licensee and get yourself a co2 gas bottle that pubs use. Last for ages and once empty are cheap to get refilled. Keep safe.

That's a good home mechanic welder. Stay clear of gas less wire for body work. If you don't clean all the slag off the weld it can react with the body filter after a while and starts to lift it. Hardest thing with mig is setting the amps and wire speed. You know when you've got right, it should sound like eggs frying 🍳. 😂 Good luck. Oh yeah forgot to say never used tape on your regulator

I thought your dad was a sparks, I would just let him check out your electrical consumer unit in your shed. No doubt he installed it, but you got a lot of electrical appliances in that shed. Looking at your wiring it's all in 3 core flex, which could be under rated? It would be good practice to install a dedicated feed and outlet for that welder. Best be safe, just like on the rigs.

My advise is get a 8 10 12 or15 litre bottle argon/co2 ASAP (and yes argon/co2 is gas to use in your instance), keep the small as backup or for portability small jobs.
ebay has them from poland and germany outright and delivered and 200bar pressure for around £75 8 litre .
also note pressure they charged to relates to amount of gas you got .
Bigger bottles should be 200bar, many only 150bar so you got 25% less gas so take that into account when pricing it .
Buy a regulator with dual gauges (cylinder pressure and flow)
When learning you will waste a lot of gas and those small green bottles be gone in under an hour messing about and welding outside will require more gas flow most of the time so you always going be heavy on gas consumption .
As a new machine it probably feed wire fairly well but the welding torch/liner and wire motor feed on these are pretty poor long term .
You also find the minimal power settings not very helpful working on thinner metal .
Not trying be negative but don't expect miracles and be patient practising as it not as easy as looks and car panel repair is hard weld to good standards .
For beginners I always recommend a a good entry diy inverter welder like powermat as infinite power adjusting and arc stability and stable wire feed makes it far easier get good result , plus the torch assemblies far better with standard replaceable liners .
If the earth lead short (many models like this are) it worth extending it (you get 3-4m of 16mm2 welding cable for under £10) or use a jump lead as a quick fix .
Best of luck and have fun, welding is useful skill even if not a master welder .

You should always file end of the wire smooth so it dont damage the small plastic tube inside the cable before torch.

  • @thebeerinnandrewmckenna2655

I used to have a welder, and I think after having thar, I would be very good, because if the torch and wire wasnt in a straight line, it struggled. With the fa's, I used co2, because it was a case of either being in the motor trade, or knowing someone who could get it. There is a gas refilling place near me who does fire extinguishers, and thru used to refill my bottle. You can either rent them, buy them, or if you know someone who has a pub, they use co2 for drinks, I bought mine, and just took it to be refilled. As for how much gas flow you need, press the trigger slightly, and start to open the regulator, you need it to be like a light breeze. When you start to weld, make sure you put the earthing clamp on a clean part of the metal, closest to where you start the weld, and it will be a better weld. To adjust the wire feed, if it stabs the metal and pushes the gun away, it's too fast. And the amps will need to be adjusted. It's a case of balancing it all up, and it wants to sound like bacon frying. Errect screens around where you will weld, or if someone goes past and gets arc eye, thru might sue. Always shout watch your eyes, before starting the weld, and you can do pulse welds, or a continuous bead, keeping the pool molten without going through. Like I sat, if it stabs the metal, turn the wire speed down, as it will push through your weld. You eill get used to it, hood luck mate. Andrew Mckenna, Nottingham. Add me in Facebook, talk more about it.

lol....the regulator you had was the same as the new 1 you bought with a gauge, other than it had no gauge, you have to unscrew the co2 connector on the regulator for it to fit the biddy bottles you have, that is made to fit the smaller bottles you have as well as pub co2 gas type and boc bottles, I use a clark 150 with pub co2 and have used it on max with 13amp plug and it's never blown the plug fuse or tripped any breakers in the house, you shouldn't need more than 130amps ever for car repairs unless you plan on making more holes in your car.

Put some wire terminals(pins) and crimp them before puting them in the plug.

It doesn’t come with a plug as it pulls over 13a on full power. So a dedicated supply with a 240v blue commando socket is the usual choice for over 13a. It will blow fuses on full whack, when that happens, that will be your issue.

I think it came without a plug in case you wanted to fit a big round industrial plug rather than a 13 amp plug

You will soon get annoyed with the mini canisters they don't last long. I use Hobby Weld they are the best for us part time welders who don't use it daily.

You should get yourself a big bottle I got one I think it cost me something like 80 quid for a full bottle and it’s lasted me something like 3 years as a hobby guy, the small bottles are ok but the big ones have tonnes more gas and are wayyy more cost effective.

BOC do a special offer that used to be called the volks weld deal, i think its now called the small garage or hobby deal. works out at about 70 to 100 quid for a largish bottle of gas including a years rental at reduced price. you will need a proper regulator or a pea shooter tester (id recommend getting a peashooter tester anyway as those small botte vales are crap) as others have said, you can weld with flux no gas wire, but it burns hotter so its very frustrating. It also makes your weld area look very scruffy to due the reaction of the flux fumes with the surrounding metal and the extra sparks etc. it also flash rusts the area around a lot quicker than gas welding. I dislike it just for the clean up need, never mind the fact that gas will give you a much better/cleaner weld on sheet steel. Also be aware that the health and safety executive have finally (as of January I think) decided that welding is carcinogenic(as well as causing a host of other nasty things like Alzheimer like illnesses) and requires respirators in use. Not particularly mandated for occasional use as long as you have good airflow but something to bear in mind.

    I can weld
My dad was a welder fabricator
    He taught me
    As I'm a tech aswell
Would show u if you are anywhere near wales
I would use argon c02 gas aswell it gives less splatter
Look at a channel called urchfab he gives a wicked demo on how best to weld he says u can tell by sound
    Which I handy to know
Wire feed is main one to play about with

0.6 wire and co2/argon mix and small tack welds if you’re welding cars, it’s not that bad when you get used to it👍🏻

@@bendude6748 i have heard that .6 wire is better for car body work, I got given two 15kg rolls of .8 that I use but will try the thinner wire as for gas I use just normal co2 (pub gas) and get on with it just fine

I have the 180 version at home the plug will be fine for car body work don’t pull that many amps welding thin metal, I can weld cars all day and haven’t ever blown a fuse and I use an extension , get rid of the little bottles they last about 10 seconds 😂😂

I would suggest fitting a 16A socket, straight from the db, just for the welder. Its not ideal on a 13A plug, plugged into a full multi socket adaptor, mounted on the wall of a wooden shed that now contains gas cannisters. In theory, the 13A fuse should blow, in reality, ive seen loads of 13A plugs melt. Just throwing my electricians opinion out there.

get over to migwelding.co.uk lots of good info there dude, also for cheap easy metal grab a wing or 2 from the scrappy and a wee set of jogglers are a great investment. just got a clarke 151 myself. same thing with no plug, but most decent welders will work fine up to 130 amps after that you might wanna start thinking of blue plug. but for most car panel work 130amps is more than enough, great video james looking forward too next one :)
