      Because us mechanics don't have all day to clean and change everything for heck of it we have a time limit set by the labour times and you customers wanting it back same day so we have to get it in and out. Being mechanic isn't like you see on CZcams the alot of pressure and deadlines

    For the reverse switch, VAG cars don't tend to have a washer for the switch - I've found adding a washer actually pushes the switch too far out so it doesn't get pressed enough by the lever to activate the reverse lights. Good work though James.

    • @TheSavageGarage
      @TheSavageGarage  Před 3 lety +10

      This would have been true but with the new switch I bought it has extra length to make up for the washer 😬

    @einfelder8262 Před 3 lety

    I find it very efficient that you didn't need to clean too much of the box, saves a lot of time. Even the internal bits didn't need oiling on assembly, because the old oil with bits of metal infused was still there. And a sentimental blob of shitty grease left on the driveshaft couplers was a pleasure to view, but the highlight for me was the amazing excessive silicone used on mating surfaces. Plenty of excess on the inside to mix through the oil. Overall kudos for tackling the job, but oh dear - some easily corrected steps not taken. The box will live long enough to see out the car, but if a job is worth doing do it properly. Plenty of time for cleaning while waiting for parts.

    I the had privilege to of worked in an old skool garage (Shiplake Motors) near Henley On Thames, where the owner (Alan Freebody) to which despite being 63 with two plastic hips, didn't think twice about whipping out a mk2 Transit gearbox onto his shoulder and get on the bench to strip and rebuild it. He was very much can it be repaired rather than replaced mentality.

    Have had to build all sorts of transmissions over the years and a good way to get interference type bearings into housings is to heat up or chill the components in an oven/hot plate/ refrigerator as appropriate. In your case gear set in fridge and gearbox casing in oven. You don’t have to go mad with it time wise but the difference it makes to putting it back together is crazy. Kudos to you for doing this yourself

  • @johnfittis5764

    I may be too late but the gearbox will go back in a lot easier if you don't fit the drive shaft flange till you have it in. The passenger side one is ok like but the drivers side will foul you on the way in. That's why you had such trouble on the way out.👍 Top job by the way, I'm impressed 👍

    Great job and nicely edited video. Just a tip (from someone who's done it and paid the price) - all that excess silicone you smeared on the outside is also on the inside! Bits can come loose and get into oilways etc - that can be an expensive mistake. Go easy on the stuff.
