  • Let’s say that you’re building a boot collection from scratch: which types of boots should you buy first? In this video, we’ll talk about the five best types of boots for guys. We're not saying all men need these boots, or that you're not a real man if you don't own them. We're saying that, if you were to own several pairs of boots, you'll get the most variety and mileage out of these styles (versus having a bunch of the same style).

    I have all the styles you covered but I also think every guy needs an "actual work" boot that you can dig fence post holes in. In addition, if you live in a large part of the western USA, you need a decent pair of cowboy boots.

      Ankle boots in full leather and a zip side without the elastic gusset on the like Chelsea's have. IMO the elastic just spoils the clean streamlined look of the Chelsea.

    • @martintanz9098
      @martintanz9098 Před 3 lety +1

      It is hard to say what my favorite is. Probably for casual wear, the Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill, which I guess is a service boot.
      For all around, I would say the Chukka, since it is so easy to get on and off. I have a pair in black and a pair in dark brown, but probably the brown is my favorite. they go with almost everything in fall through early spring from a suit, jacket and tie, sweater and corduroy, to jeans. They shine up really nice so they look not unlike a plain toe blucher.
      I still don't have a moc toe, but I do have a split toe boot.

    Great list dan collaboration with Stridewise, Brock!

  • @briang530
    @briang530 Před 3 lety +5

    I'd argue the 5 everyone should have in order are:
    1-2. Actual workbooks and a hiking/outdoor boot.
    3. A Chelsea or more formal boot (Johdhpur etc.)
    4. A chukka
    5. A boot to wear with jeans ie. those discussed in your first 2 choices.
    As a Canadian, I greatly enjoyed the Viberg shoutout. Regarding Viberg tho, I'd add that I owned a pair of semi-custom Rigger boots from them that cost about CAD $600ish a few years ago. These were lace to toe 7oz full grain triple stitched, Norwegian welted with nailed heals (the custom part) and 9oz iron leather insoles and counters. Viberg makes amazingly good products by hand but when their most robust field/work boot is $400 less than a casual day-wear boot, one should consider what exactly they are paying for.
    The same could be said about RM Williams and their ever climbing price since LVMM -and many others - involvement. (I own a pair and adore them also)

    • @christianfritz6333
      @christianfritz6333 Před 2 lety

      I cuncur, however I say work work boot and hiking boot should be different categories
      My 5 is
      1. Service/heritage
      2. Work boot
      3. Chelsea
      4. Chukka/Desert Boots, Wallabys
      5. Hiking
      I based this list on the amount I wear these boots, I also have "fun boots" in most of these styles especially my work boots, comes in handy when someone is sent to find "the guy in the neon green, bright red, or yellow boots". However if I had to choose one it would probably be a Chelsea.

    I can't stress enough how much it's important to invest in high quality shoes. I never paid much attention because shoes are small when it comes to other clothes and I thought they are often overlooked since they are on your feet. Boy, how I was wrong. I saved around 250 dollars and went to local shoemaker. After 3 years of daily wear and only a bit of care plus shoetrees they still look new and they look like they are worth million bucks! I get so many compliments on them.

    For the ultimate Service boot, look to the William Lennon B5 WW1 spec boot. Wm. Lennon made them during WW1 to the original MOD spec, and they can make them now, to the original MOD spec, using the original lasts & press cutters. Just be aware, the original specification featured hobnails & iron "horseshoe" heel finishers, so they aren't the most practical boots in the modern city environment - but Lennons will build with alternate sole types if you ask...
    That they are the last manufacturers of "Derby" style boots to be based in Derby(shire) just adds a little to the company's usp. Sensible pricing too - sub $300 for a UK made heavy-duty all leather boot is no bad deal...

    Yeah, the Aussie suit-and-Chelsea look is an odd one. If you have a slimmer trouser, it's obvious you're not wearing lace-up shoes, and there is always the risk of the trouser leg catching on the back of the boot, which is not a good look. RMWs are seen as the premier Chelsea, but there's just something about them that I don't like. They're synonymous with rich pricks, which is possibly the origin of the phrase 'Collins Street cowboy' after their flagship store on Collins Street in Melbourne. No doubt they're very well made boots, though.

    What is the main feature of the “service” boot is the type of the counter... the triple stitching, nothing to do with slim silhouette...
    the fact that most of models today use the boondocker pattern, doesn’t mean that is a definition, the ww1 model was more slim, the ww2 is basically a chunk version of IR... but still , same pattern..
    Btw, I never saw, any , single picture of miners or workers using 6 inch boots with that type of counter reinforcement... even in the IR RW page with the “bla bla” coal miners, the catalogue shows a boot w pattern that is a beckman... the only boot they did in that time that looks like IR is the skytrooper... so, we shouldn’t take ads from companies for granted...

      You can't just try a cowboy boot style or brand. There are multiple types and styles that they come in. Between the basics of roper, work, dressy, casual, etc, there are multiple heels, toes, heights to take into consideration. The fit is also key to wearing the perfect pair of boots, some brands offer arch support and others just have a contoured Inner sole. The comfort is based on what you require, just like Chelsea boots, work boots, service boots, etc, there are many skins used to make a perfect boot. Sometimes just changing the skin changes the effect you are trying to show off. There are even cowboy boots that unless you show the tops off you won't even know that they are cowboy boots. Also if the height of them are not your thing, there are zip up boots that come up just above the ankle.

      For hiking boots I would actually ho with stuff like Lowa or La Sportiva. Much better protection and durability than the boots usually mentioned in this type of videos. Especially if you live in some rocky area

    Good looking boots, but most of them are far too uncomfortable, stiff, very hard sole and not flexing enough ,and are typical winter shoes.

    Boots don’t make sense, functionally. We have ankles. Boots inhibit range of motion.

      Good thing about boots is that if they are not bulky, you can wear them all year around. People compliment me whenever I dress up t-shirt and jeans with boots. Adds them style and hells me look better than others. This doesn't mean I'm gonna rock boots in 30 degrees Celsius with shorts.

    I just cannot get into the mock toe. I grew up seeing mock toe boots as a purely work boot and just cannot imagine wearing them in any casual manner. The Chelsea boot is also just in my opinion an ugly boot. I realize I am very alone in that sentiment and many men wear them as an essential boot, but i wish they would disappear

    Guys who own all 5 of these boots go yo Starbucks to check their email. Because where else would you go when you have 5 pairs of boots and people have to see you in them? It’s not like you can go to Walmart 5 days of the week. And the guys at work would surely make fun of you for wearing Chelsea boots…
