    This has to be one of the Beatles best songs, one of the best songs of the 60s, and maybe one of the best songs ever made.
    Also, from somewhere near the end of their early period, whoever wrote the song also sings the song, unless it was Ringo most of the time. Ringo's voice is probably the most easily distinguishable, it's a lot deeper and has this country-ish twang to it. Paul did that middle section in this song, John did the rest. I got incredibly into The Beatles in 2022, to the point where I looked up who did what vocal parts on which songs so I could easily pick up on their voices and recognize them.

    This is a really good example of a Lennon-McCartney, John did most of the first section, with some suggestion from Paul and Paul made the middle section, it was his idea to have the chaotic orchestra.
    The first sections and the last section were sung by lennon, the middle part, after the crescendo, was McCartney.

    Yes, Nick, you are correct. Lennon sings the first and last part, McCartney the middle section. In fact, it was originally written as two separate songs, epitomising their respective styles, and the joined with the orchestral bridge. For me, that’s one of the reasons it’s my favourite Beatles song of all time. And it’s a good reminder of the difference between their two styles, as is Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields.

    When released in 1967, every listener’s jaw dropped with that final sustained piano chord -which ricocheted around the world. Every human who’d ever had access to a piano as a child, had fooled around/seeing how long that damper pedal (sorry, I’m not a pianist)😉 could sustain a note or chord - no one had ever recorded that before.
    It came from the simplest curiosity and exploration, yet as used in this track it also connotes a finality, an infinity, and especially with that moment of silence before - an atom bomb, a supernova …
    It’s childlike, human, and cosmic, all at the same time.
    The greatest art almost always has more than one meaning, simultaneously.

    Thing I love about this song is it's meant to be critique of the modern world mixed with hope, ending with a nuclear explosion John wanted to replicate "the sound of the end of the world". Point was to invite us to ask, what kind of a world do we want to live in? John's parts reflect on what we consider important, the triviality of wealth and position, while Paul's parts represent people just going about their business, not really stopping to think about what's going on. In the middle of it all, they invite us to "turn on" - i.e. wake up to what really matters in life. Mix of the avante garde art movement of the 60s, Picasso's anti-war painting "Guernica", and psychedelic-flavoured love. It's not just a great song, it's one of the most important artistic statements of the 20th century. Love it.

    So this is a top tier Beatles song for sure, but I’m not a huge fan of of the video, I think the visuals distract your attention away from the sentiment of the lyrics in my opinion, but I did once see a video to this that someone done, that was a anime portraying all the elements in the song, and that was amazing, unfortunately I can’t find it anywhere. It was most definitely John singing the first part (the news reports) and then Paul sang the bit about a man in every day life and then back to John.

    one thing that made the beatles so fun and interesting is their progression through the 60s. when i listen to the beatles i almost invariably listen to them in sequence. i discard the few songs i don't like. include the singles that correspond to the albums and just dig it all. its quite a journey. you'll notice a lot of maturity and utter excitement and innovation in their early stuff too. a lot of energy comes out of those early years. the beatles, as a group, were not of this mortal world. thanks for the video.

      There was "videos" back then of the Beatles performing and OTHER groups performing from the British Invasion as well as American artists. They were performances of them singing a song. In the BEATLES case, they were called "promo films" (as in "PROMOTIONAL films ") The term "video" wasn't really used then. They were usually made to promote a new single, and sent to TV stations instead of the Beatles (or any other group, or singer) going out on tour all the time, to promote a new single. The Beatles promo films were considered the precursor to MTV and their videos.

  • @patticrichton1135
    @patticrichton1135 Před měsícem

    I thought you knew their voices by now, guys, especially YOU Nick!! This is from their Sgt.Pepper album, and the lyrics are from news stories that John actually read in the newspaper, it was NOT from an LSD trip. The "lucky man who made the grade" in the first verse was Tara Brown, who was the heir to the Guinness (beer) fortune, and was also a friend of John's, he was killed in a car crash, and it was in the newspaper.
    The line, "I saw a film today, oh boy, the ENGLISH army had just WON the WAR..." refers to the movie that John Lennon starred in, in 1966 called "HOW I WON THE WAR," it was a combination anti-war/"black" comedy (nothing to do with race....a "black comedy" is morbid humor) that takes place during World War I. John's character was "PRIVATE GRIPWEED," a member of the English Army. The line "A CROWD OF PEOPLE TURNED AWAY" (was likely because the film didn't do very well in the theaters). It goes on..."BUT I JUST HAD TO LOOK, HAVING READ THE BOOK." A lot of us feel that he could be referring to the SCRIPT to the movie "HOW I WON THE WAR," in order to know WHAT the film was going to be about, AND to LEARN HIS LINES as "Private Gripweed."
    The line "4,000 HOLES IN BLACKBURN, LANCASHIRE, " was another article in the newspaper that John saw. He thought it was very funny that the city knew there were 4,000 "holes' ( POT HOLES in the roads, in the city of Blackburn, in Lancashire, England) so that is why he then went on to write the following line " AND THOUGH THE HOLES WERE RATHER SMALL, they had to COUNT THEM ALL... NOW THEY KNOW HOW MANY HOLES IT TAKES TO FILL THE ALBERT HALL." He is referring to the ROYAL ALBERT HALL, which is a famous concert hall in London (the "CONCERT FOR GEORGE" (Harrison) was held there on Nov. 29, 2002 which was the first anniversary of George's death. It was commissioned by Queen Victoria to be built to honor her deceased husband PRINCE ALBERT. Building began in 1867 and it opened in March of 1871, It's a BEAUTIFUL OVAL shaped theater, look it up to photos of its exterior and more importantly, its INTERIOR. The MIDDLE part sung by PAUL, "WOKE UP, FELL OUT OF BED....." was from an unfinished song of his, But it fit nicely into John's song.

    One very interesting little factoid about this track, among most other Beatles songs, is that it was recorded on a 4-track machine. This was just one more way in which The Beatles were innovative, even revolutionary. Even though The Beatles had been recording on 4-track since the Hard Days Night album, they were only recording guitars, bass, drums, and vocals, for the most part. They definitely had not been recording 40 piece orchestras. Today, you practically have an unlimited number of tracks to record on, 64 tracks if you wanted and that even includes little home bedroom studios. So to create the magic they created in those days was nothing short of astonishing at the time.
