Lennon considered this to be his " first major piece of work. " Lennon asked George Martin to add a piano passage for the song. He composed a baroque-based solo which elevated the material immensely. Ringo's drum pattern is uniquely fitting.

George Martin, (the producer) played the harpsichord on this one. Although all 4 Beatles could play piano, they all could only play very basic "Key of C" chords and notes. (all white keys only). All of them got better at piano as the years went on, but this early, they had to have someone play it for them.

Lennon and McCartney were the principle songwriters. Usually the person who contributed the most to the writing of the song is the person who sang lead. In this case it was more Lennon in the composition and that’s why he sang lead on this. McCartney definitely contributed but this was more John. It is so beautiful. Thank you for a great reaction to this. 👏👏🥰

To truly experience the Beatles you can't cherry pick your way back and forth through their albums. To appreciate all of their music you have to start with the first album and work your way forward and grow as the Beatles grew in their journey of making music. For another great John song from Rubber Soul, I suggest Norwegian Wood or Nowhere Man. For a great Paul song from the same album, I suggest Michelle or You Won't See Me or I'm Looking Through You. For all of these songs, it's better to listen to the album version before you try any live versions
