Welcome back to RBR! Today, we’re celebrating 40 years of the #BMWM #M5 with the introduction of the first-ever hybrid in the Seventh Generation G90 #BMWM5. This powerhouse combines a 585HP V8 engine with a 142HP electric motor, raising some important questions about weight, handling, power-to-weight ratio, and price. Most of which I’ll answer today: and the price you’ll be quite happy with!!
The G90 BMW M5 delivers a total of 727HP and 1000NM of torque, rocketing from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 189 mph (305 km/h). The V8 alone contributes 585HP and 750NM of torque, featuring a new cross-bank exhaust manifold for better heat management and optimized oil separation, revving up to 7200 rpm. While not as powerful as the 625HP unit in the X6M, this setup might be leaving room for a competition level in the future… ;)
The hybrid system adds up to 197HP from the motor and battery, with the motor producing 280NM of torque. The battery has an 18.6 kW usable capacity, offering a range of 67-69 km (42-43 miles) and supports 7.4 kW charging, which will increase to 11 kW from November. Very useful for a daily supercar
Weighing in at 2435 kg, the new M5 is 540 kg heavier than its predecessor (1895 kg), but the power-to-weight ratio is still better which leaves some hope, but what about handling?
The M xDrive system is the usual fair with an active M differential, drift mode, and near actuator slip limiter. The chassis features the adaptive M suspension and electronic dampers at each wheel. Unique kinematics and elastokinematics, a rigid connection of the M variable ratio steering, and 1.5-degree rear-wheel steering should enhance feedback and accuracy. More changes I’ll go over including the stiffening done to the chassis.
Design-wise, the G90 showcases typical BMW M DNA with a wider front (+75mm) and rear (+48mm), staggered 20/21-inch wheels, and massive 100mm exhaust pipes. I’ll show you both the matte black car, and an isle of many green version.
Inside, the new M5 features an all-new steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, new M seats with a lighted logo, and M lighting in the 5 Series light bar. The M Control panel in the center includes M Modes, an M Hybrid button, setup options, and a red start button.
M Drive Professional comes standard in the UK, adding DYNAMIC and DYNAMIC PLUS modes to keep the drive system and cooling at high levels or for short bursts of full power on the track. Launch control is available in all modes except 2WD.

500kg worth of additional weight is an absurdity and by any measure a step backwards
While that used to be relevant it’s a lot less so now. It being a hybrid is going to hide that on acceleration and there are heavier well handling cars these days for less money so I’m sure bmw has it sorted extremely well.

@@cokemachine62590 True that's a fact we cannot overlook the whole power/weight ratio debalce but tbh it may very well be a miracle of an engineering product by them and they somewhow mask it and make it perform even better than the f90..BMW is well capable of that I still wouldn't pass judgement til I see these being officially put to the test..

Their design choices are all business. Similar to what lexus started doing 10-12 years ago. Make polarizing cars, grab customer’s attention, sell a bunch of said cars, then hopefully tone it back down a bit

Previous M5 owner. Possible future buyer. I like the front end. I’m on the fence with the rear tail lights and not liking the rear fenders.
Tail light design feels very generic and no flared fenders is a miss imo.

@@Todestuete def not looking for hybrid or e-only features. i'm on the side of the skeptics about this move towards hybrids for high-performance cars because of the loss of visceral feeling from a V8 motor as well as the increasingly complex engines on these cars that only dealers can fix at criminally high rates. but this said, i've only driven the newer NSX which is a hybrid. it was mad quick and fast, but lacked the roar of a monstrous motor.
@@MuppetsSh0w i don't see it visually on this M5. what i mean by flared fenders isn't quite hellcat widebody, but more like the look seen on the RS6 Avant or F80 M3, with a pronounced bulge and menacing stance.
I like the overall look of it, tbh. It's very tall. The lights in front are nice, they remind me of the Bangle 5 series.
BMW has to be respected for pushing through with their artistic Identity.

the front looks absolutely stunning and the diffuser at the back really helps the back not look so boxy and square I often praise audi for really aggressive front ends but this just took it to another level id be shitting myself if I saw this front end in my rearview mirror.

Priced the same as the predecessor which in this market is bloody insane. Standard equipment like merino leather, pan roof, heads up display, bowers and wilkins speakers, m adaptive suspension, front heated and electric m seats, flat bottomed m steering wheel, ambient lighting, heated steering wheel, reverse camera, comfort access, tinted windows, 4 zone climate control, automatic boot release. You dont need to spec anything at all on this.

Sad days for BMW - in a 20 year period, BMW went from manual, RWD, NA V8/V10 M5 to a HEAVY, Hybrid turbo V8 with AWD and Auto Transmission!? These will depreciate like a rock as I can't imagine the cost of fixing / servicing this hybrid system.

I feel like I one of the few people who absolutely love the design, shame about the weight.
I love the m3/m4 now, I think BMW needed these aggressive changes to really distinguish each model, most models before were very sleeper build esc especially the 5 series, now the average person will definitely be able to distinguish each model, far more road presence
I should add I hated the M2 and M3/4 redesign but overtime grew on me so much, again shame about the weight of the m2 and M5, but I really do love the design of the M5, its road presence is absolutely insane

The G90 M5 is the first M5 in history to be slower than it's predecessor. If this new M5 lost about 1,000 lbs or was the same weight as the F90 M5 CS, it would be the greatest M5 of all time...
This is "exactly what we wanted" from the M5?! This?! Might as well hand over the keys of the M Division to Mansory at this point. They'll do a better job with this kind of a design language and performance direction. The entire car in its current form is an afterthought considering what we had before. My god..
So, the new AMG C63 is 0.1 sec faster. It's just the number, but it's also cheaper. The only reason to get an M5 besides money is the sound of a V8, which, if AMG could simulate through speakers, would get them more buyers. But, the new C63 lease in the US is ridiculously $2k as opposed to the old gen C63 that could be leased for $800..$1100. What makes much more sense nowadays is an M3/M4 xDrive.
