- It happened during the last stage of the Soviet-Afghan War.
Already withdrawing its forces, Soviet High Command needed to display its might one last time by recapturing the vital Satukandav Pass. But to achieve that goal, the commanding heights surrounding the pass had to be held against continuous Mujahideen attacks.
In the Battle for Hill 3234, an outnumbered force of Soviet paratroopers held their own against relentless attacks from the Afghan rebels.

I'm sure most of you know the rest of those lyrics. And after watching this episode of Sabaton History, you also know the real historical events behind those words.
What some of you might not know though, is the story of the guitar solo in Hill 3234.
As usual when Joakim had written the song, he sent it out to the rest of the band. Much to his surprise though, this time Thobbe Englund - lead guitarist at the time - sent a file back within the hour.
Thobbe had just plugged his guitar in and hit play. He was literally listening to Hill 3234 for the first time when the solo spontaneously popped into his head, and he recorded it on the spot.
And to make this solo even more special: it is that very first recording Thobbe made that ended up on the album!
Not one single re-take.
Talk about a blessing from the Muses...

The Russian term for what is usually named "a hill" in the Western military geography is "vysota", literal translation is "elevation", so it makes a lot more sense in Russian.

It's no wonder Afghanistan has the reputation of being the graveyard of empires.
tbh its the same situation here in caucasus region.

Well, it’s probably more that they just shot slower. I’m guessing if the bois in red had Kalashnikovs they probably would have run out of ammo just as fast.

CIA trained and supplied Afghan rebels, little they knew that some 13 years later these rebels would be killing US soldiers in Mogadishu.
you would assume that people from CIA could calculate these chances, but it seems they didn't
Actually the C.I.A did not actually funded and arm the part of the Mujahadeen that would be later be part of the Taliban but funded the Northern Alliance which is also part of the Mujahadeen.
They also were helped by Maoist groups (Sino-Soviet split) and Iran (Shia-Sunni split, although I don't know if socialist Afghanistan was atheist or tolerated religion but if it did did it subscribe to a particular branch of Islam).
I want to break this rumor as well. The CIA did not fund anything that moved who was willing to fight against Afganistan. Remember the US wants to make Allies who would be useful in WWIII so they fund tribes and leaders who are friendly to the west both in idea and will. Bin Laden was not one of them. HIs supplies originated from Pakistan. People forget the top three suppliers of the Mujahadeen were the US, Pakistan, and China. And they all funded tribes based on their own ideas.

I really like this for giving respect to Soviet soldiers. There's real heroes and great men in every army, it's the same all over the world and history, f*** the politics!
