- Pneumatic controlled Industrial AC running on R-22 should have been replaced years ago but I keeps getting $3k bandages. The AC features a water cooled condenser and has a hot deck steam coil.

I can remember when R22 was $48 for 30lbs 😂. Good job stopping the bleed 👍
Same 👍
I can remember when 12 and 22 both were 35 for 30 lb jug.
I also remember back in the day never used scales. It was amazing some guys would get 50 to 60 lbs out of a 30 lb jug. They called them miracle jugs.😅
@@MrJujubean Oh yeah, 22 could even blow out drainlines too …. Thankfully we’re being regulated now $$$$ all that freedom was just too much 🤣😂🥲🥲🥲
Its bow 1510 a jug near me
99% of the time I used my scab tank of 22 to blow drain lines,, rarely fresh clean virgin 22 but it was ALWAYS 22... lol @@subcoolHVAC
Changing fan bearings on those machines is a blast.
They look like they could be easier than some if they come off
Gotta love that old equipment. You ever consider getting a gasket cutter for flange gaskets?! As an ammonia tech, I swore by that tool. Saved my ass plenty. One of the most valuable gadgets you can buy, aside from that Stratus.
I have a scraper but I’m not sure if that’s the same?
Nice to see what's okay and not okay with the old stuff. Very informative. Thanks for your effort to bring us along.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting!
Sure reminds me of a Dunham-Bush big 4 glycol chiller I used to work on all the time, it too was an R22 machine. The chilled glycol was used to cool a gas flow
Pneumatic transmitter in each discharge duct should be reading air temperatures… if the controls work I guess 😂😂😂. Ground my teeth down to nubs on that stuff for the last 26 years. Keep up the good work
Enjoyed the video of some old monster equipment. Some interesting leaks at 10:33
I remember when a service call was 35 dollars and freon was 5 dollars a pound ❤
I worked on one of these giant Trane 8-cylinder used in a chiller recently. Sadly the building manager wants to replace it this year with a new R290 chiller. I would normally support this 100% but I’d hate to see a old beauty like this getting trashed.
I just picked up an mb5b and I absolutely love it so far. Another good video as always.
Thanks! It’s a great bag
I guarandamntee you if I'd have tightened down that suction manifold I would have made it worse... lol
I know the feeling. I can throw a rock behind me and break something a block away in front of me.
Lol @@HVACRSurvival
Cool video buddy...thanks for sharing videos of the old stuff...i remember units like this fondly from my beginning days
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Love my MB5B. Grabbed it as soon as it was released.
Looks about 40 years old, eh? The cap is such a simple thing, protection for the stem. Used to work at a place where the students(inmates) would huff the refrigerant from the systems. Brain vitamins. 🤣🤣🤣
Looks more like 1960s, 50+ years old.
What a dinosaur of a unit! Great video as always man!
Great work Rick.
Respect from the UK Rick. That is a beast but interesting old school. I agree with all you say, you will probably get a blue context banner!
That would be interesting. I Just stated the law and fixed the leak with a good faith effort as required. We’re not going to die from climate change, the planet is going to face gods wrath before that ever happens.
@@HVACRSurvival Your right, keep up the good work!
@@HVACRSurvivalClimate change has happened before. There are tropical plant fossils under the sand in the Sahara desert.
Great video Rick, You're the man. Thanks for the insight on these industrial units.
Glad to help👍👍
Excellent fix 👍
Thanks 👍
Rick, it’s another amazing video! Thanks
🙏🫶👍👍
Great job as always!!!!!! On 10:34 your suction hose is leaking like crazy!
11:07 watching the R22 leaking at the suction valve on top of the compressor .... $$$$$$$$$$
Nice diagnosis brother!
Thank you!
I think Untied sells replacement caps for that valve leaking. Other than that, its a beast of a machine. Needs to be retired.
Great video Rick stay safe.
Thanks, you too!
That pneumatic stuff is usually pretty reliable. Thermostats are probably the most common thing I replace, and an occasional actuator diaphragm.
I haven’t done much with them but it is interesting how it works
Before digital controls, pneumatic was the best.
Recalibrate the t-stats DA or RA. Volume controllers....i still enjoy working on pneumatic systems.
@@jasonjohnsonHVAC the ones where I work have all been switched to electric dampers with thermistors everywhere that report to BMS. Problem after problem, everyday. We used to have direct acting Johnson controls tstats. There were several that were still original from the early 80s...actuators too.
@topher8634 are you using PE's then to utilize the air side of it?
I feel like I have seen people put balloons on those valves to see if it would leak in between visits.
That might work 👍👍
Pretty amazing the variety of stuff you lot work on .
Sometimes i wish i could diversify a bit .
For some reason i canalmost never stop a leak by tightening them bolts , i always have to replace the gasket , even had to have one custom made ...
This was an unusual day for sure. Normally I don’t get that lucky. I’m surprised the bolt didn’t break off 🤣
I wish now I could have made the expo this year. Could have run into you. Maybe be able to get to the next one. I have a hot deck cold deck system where I work and thankfully we converted the old pneumatics over to digital several years ago. Way les headaches. It also uses chilled water from the house system for the cold deck. Another plus in my opinion. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much for the kind words 👍
Hot deck cold deck isn't like VAV, it is constant volume. That is stock Trane condensing unit. Why doesn't customer want system fixed? All those pneumatic controls can easily be verified, simply start checking inputs from transmitters. They can be calibrated or replaced. The Barber Coleman receiver controllers can also be calibrated or replaced. Just like DDC except it's air signal, not a voltage single.
A good portion of the people that watch my stuff don’t really understand the difference between either one of of those items (whether it’s a VAV or a hot deck cold deck) and I believe I said it’s similar not that they’re exactly the same. Addressing the question that was asked, why does the customer not want to replace it or do maintenance on it? that’s not for me to decide, all I know is they’ve been given the opportunity and they choose not to do it. This is a factory that’s been there for a long time that just keeps milking things along and does not put any money into anything,
AC from hell
Good little vid ... Thx
You deserve more subs! Great work 👍
I appreciate that! Time will tell.
What a relic.
I use to work on a lot of this old stuff 😶🌫️try and put a balloon or rubber glove over that relief valve with a nylon tie and see if it leaks they won’t even allow those once through water converters in my part of country but what do they expect the customer to do $$$ ❤
Yeah, we’re not in a big market and we don’t rip people people off like that. That’s why we’re one of the largest companies in the area.
Another thing you can do is put silicone on it, you’ll know it blew out if it goes off.
We haven't been allowed to refill R22 since 1/1/2002 here in Sweden, and all systems with 3kg or more of R22 had to be converted or destructed 'til 1/1/2015
meanwhile in China and other countries.........
More small air cool generators please!
Dang Redcoats. Great video also.
looked easier to find where it wasn't leaking... 🤣
They don't make them like they used to. :)
Will the new systems last 50+ years?
@@dfirth224 Every system has a lifespan. You can only patch things together for so long.
Intimidating equipment there.
Man that was an old dinosaur 🦕 beast
nice dinosaur unit. check your hose port I saw something when you are charging it up.
Cool man
Should have tightened the packing nut tightening the cap is only delaying the inevitable The next guy behind you is not going to have your logic when he comes for another service call
I did tighten it. Just didn’t show it
Wish I got to work with you again on that junk! It needs retired big time! Sucks working on it.
Work with me again?
@@HVACRSurvival I helped put the motor on the unit beside it.
@@HVACRSurvival all good I respect what you’re doing and won’t ruin anything. I wanna see more videos of you working on our junk!
😂😭🤣👍👍👍
i got into the trade a little over 2 years ago and the resi company I started with (commercial now) was charging 285 a pound when I started and 380 when I left for r22.
stuff is getting out of hand
could that company replace that monster with two smaller units? Better efficiency and easier to get in there?
First of all, nice job, Rick! Second, why can we not put FN caps back on? Especially an old king valve! Drives me crazy.
Sad thing is it was one of our guys. I’m probably gonna catch shit for saying that.
@HVACRSurvival I see the same shit, it's too easy to not do. Small things go a long way. Gotta take a little pride in what you're doing.
Looks like a 1960s installation. 50+ years old. Will the modern systems last that long?
Probably depends on maintanance, but you probably can put 10 new ones in for the global warming potential this thing has caused.
I doubt you’ll get that many years from anything today.
You'd be lucky to get a ⅓ of the lifespan of that old one nowadays
Just started a job that doesn’t provide gauges. Do you prefer the testos over the fieldpiece smans?
I like the Tesos cause they’re smaller. Generally most companies don’t provide anything other than a recovery machine, a torch and a vacuum pump.
Great video Rick! Are you able to share what your company is charging for R22? Just curious…we don’t see a lot of it north of you…
We don’t mark it up a lot. Last I heard was probably between $115 & $125 a pound. I could be off that it was last year’s pricing if not a year and a half ago.
ProSeal XL4 Sealant with Dye Direct Inject 6-15 ton What you think about it Bro Thanks for video
I’ve never had any luck with the sealants. I’ve tried 4 different ones over the years and they all have failed. I haven’t tried that one though.
Saturday night video instead of Sunday 😎
