He's right about the lack of atmosphere. Its probably the biggest sin that made the game so bland. Some swells of music and ambient OST would have made up for a lot.
Only ever played Killzone (first entry), but I guess because of some nostalgia, it was a decent game. I have seen some people say if it wasn't slapped as a "Halo Killer" it might've held up as a bit better. Some of the designs were neat imo.
Killzone was never meant to be a "Halo killer" it was just named that by news outlets to generate interest. It was made because of the distinct lack of multiplayer first-person shooters for PlayStation 2. Great series however the first game isn't that great and neither was Shadow Fall.
For all the downsides this game had it holds a place in my heart. Haven’t played the other entries, didn’t know this was supposed to be a Halo Killer until like 2010, but I loved it. Also if you really really liked this game, Killzone Source exists as a “what could’ve been” snippet.

Yeah Sony labeled this a Halo Killer and overhyped it , yes it had bugs and other issues, and compared to Halo which released years before it was an inferior product in almost all regards. But Halo was a particularly exceptional game at the time of it's release, where as Killzone was more in line with contemporary titles of the time in terms of quality. I don't think it's really fair to call a game bad, while judging against something that was an exception in terms of quality. You compare the game to WWII, but I suspect it was more heavily influenced by the first world war. Which is generally portrayed as being more bland in a lot of media. But the game literally opens with trench warfare against a bunch of guys in gas masks. I don't know, maybe my opinion is skewed. I didn't get the original Xbox until 2005 with Halo as my first game and I had experienced Killzone 1 as a result, not even having heard of Halo when I had gotten it. But as a Playstation only gamer at the time, it was a fairly impressive entry at the time. I don't think it has aged well, but there is a lot of once good things that haven't aged well.
So, fun fact the PS2 had an audio limit of 48 channels at 48khz and the classic Xbox had a limit of 64 channels at 64khz. The Xbox also had a more flexible RAM system for its audio processing.
Not to mention the community simping for the genocidal space nazis and keep saying they are the actual good guys might put some people off. For the record they are not and anyone claiming the opposite is either missinformed or arguing in bad faith.
Wow Star Wars sequel hate reaching the point where people remember original trilogy storm troopers as super badasses is actually wild. Makes them sound like fake ass Star Wars fans given how much clowning on stormtroopers has been a thing since 77

For a PS2 game its pretty spectacular what they did with it, even if the story is relatively bland compared to the batshit insane stuff they do with modern shooters. Which si unfrotatneyl the path Killzone 2 went down where it and its follow on sequals turned into an overdeveloped, visually messy, space opera drama instead of a sci fi military shooter.

Killzone 2 and Killzone Mercenary are amazing.
They need to port the games to pc so more people can enjoy the games as well as old fans.
